What happened to the demoscene? It used to be all the rage
>>
>>106501539
People still make demos for C64. You're not there.
>>
>>106501539
Still alive and kicking.

Last I tuned in was for X2023. What's new?

Please explain to me what that's about. I remember another anon mentioning some sites a while back where people would post their weird retro-looking 3D tech demos. But I never really understood the appeal.

It still exists but nobody cares because it’s not as interesting. In the 90s it was better sound and graphics than any game or console. Now it’s just autism.

Everything that can be done, has been done. Gamecracking is dead, no one cares anymore. It's just a hobby for some of the few boomers left doing it.

For me, having grown up in the 8-bit era. I'm familiar with the limitations of the machines, so it's cool to see what kind of tricks people pull off on the different systems.

This may seem like nothing to (ie still looks like shit.) But being familiar with the Apple //'s display modes, this blows the mind of 12 year old me.

you really do have to have a feel for what a machine is "normally" capable of to appreciate an outstanding demo on it.
a casual watcher might think "that looks cool", but someone more familiar with the system will be more like "wait how the fuck did they do that"

pic related, what CGA is designed to do vs. what a scener can do
>>
>>106510160
No offense too the A// chads working on this, you're all obviously working hard but damn if the C64 demoscene doesn't entirely eclipse yours (or any other 8 bit computer's (or most other 16 bit computers'))

It's kind of jarring seeing these in succession for two machines with basically the same cpus.

You might say "but multimedia!!", but one of the machines in the two videos is equipped with proper display adapters and a sound device, while the other is a 1541.

C=64 masterrace.
>>
>>106510752
If you play some commercial games for C64 and Apple II it's easy to see how C64 vastly outperforms the Apple II. Of course the C64 being so turbocharged for its time attracted a large number of hobbyists and that leads to more and more tricks being created but still I don't think it's a fair comparison.
>>
>>106511602
Like I said, The C=64 does outdo Apple // in multimedia (graphics and sound), besides being significantly younger, but the demoscene itself outdoes A//'s by a margin (even when there is a tonne of talentt shared between the two) and a 1541 to A// is even more absurd of a comparison similarly, even though they have the same cpu(almost), 1541 only has 2KB of ram and the driver rom is 16KB, so it's actually vastly inferior to Apple in comparison, yet the demo is vastly more polished and dare I say, technically superior.

It's simply a case of the masterrace being the masterrace, no offense.

i've seen demos run from a floppy drive, but what i haven't seen is a demo run from a floppy drive

one of my teachers won some prices way back in the day. It probably died off because the tools are good enough where to make something greate you are better off mastering blender instead of cpp and math

Video killed the ̶r̶a̶d̶i̶o̶ ̶s̶t̶a̶r̶ demo scene. Not completely. As others have noted, there are still demos being made, mostly for classic hardware, but when demos were at their height, their visuals were the best you could see on a computer. Once full screen video with a decent frame rate came into being, you could see pretty much anything on a computer.
For programmers, it's pretty amazing to see what others can squeeze out of the hardware but for eye candy normies, they can watch millions of pre-rendered videos. The recent demo 'Nine' was only of interest to those who understood the limitations of C64 video hardware. To anyone else, it was at best a cute animation.

It could do so so much, but it needs a lot of years of focused autism to really get there.
