You don't want software updates for this with sideloading apps going away. Nvidia is the AI company for AI scam businesses, so they're never going to make consumer tech again.
Until a fork of android TV becomes able to be installed on mini PCs as an OS with the ability to install apps properly on it this is the best you're gonna get.

thats what i was thinking, im currently using an apple TV, but my parents Roku is getting very slow so i was looking into a replacement. I dont love the navigation of the apple TV compared to the Roku remote, so maybe ill just get a newer Roku for them and call it a day.

It also has support for all lthe surround sound audio formats you could want, so it just werks with my AVR

FWIW any (recent) Fire stick will be at least more performant than any Roku. Even if your parents aren't doing 4k, that overhead will make the rest smoother. That being said, I fucking hate both Fire and Roku and shit, both Apple and Android boxes.

It works the same as the google tv in my bedroom. In fact it probably crashes just as often if not more. The ai sharpening feature is something I use pretty often. I guess overall the shield seems less useful these days.

I have 4 of these. Still the best. While rare, Nvidia still gives firmware updates too, amazingly enough. Of course if they fuck with sideloading that would suck, but I don't see it happening.

I still use mine all the time. Replaced the launcher, disabled auto updates and a bunch of apps, put ad blocking YouTube app on it, jellyfin etc. It's all I need. It locks up from time to time and i have to pull the plug.

Apple TV with Jellyfin and Infuse. The ATV device is ludicrously overpowered as they contain binned iPhone chips. Infuse can direct-play everything on it even when software decoding is necessary.

I mean if you don't wanna use a PC or NUC due to power consumption you can use this.

Got one for my parents, loaded Tivimate +PTV & Stremio + Real_Debrid onto it and it just replaces TV & streaming services.

A PC could do it better & recording tv would actually fucking work but I don't know of any IPTV player on PC or at least one that works.
Stremio is on everything.
