Some Asian criminal group was recently arrested for changing the firmware of HDD's and selling a massive amount of counterfeit hard drives. How would one check if the drive their own is one of these counterfeit ones?
>>
>>106516121
What do you mean by counterfeit? As in it lies about its size?
>>
>>106516121

in early 2000s some people recorded different rpm hdd and could tell their rotation speed by sound spectrum or fast fourier graphics

No, it's a rebranded Seagate. My dad died that way

It's simple don't buy Seagate
>>
stay away from amazon and ebay, and you'll miss most of those counterfeit and used-as-new drives.

Selling used drives as new.
They reset the SMART data but some software like Seagate's Field Accessible Reliability Metrics (FARM) might report a higher usage (unless the scammers managed to reset that too)
Here is an article in German: https://www.heise.de/news/Gebrauchte-Seagate-Festplatten-als-Neuware-im-Umlauf-10254276.html

Short answer: you can never be 100% sure.
The problem is shops get scammed themselves and don't always know theor drives are counterfeit.
But when you buy from a reputable store and you see any physical wear (like around the screw holes) or the SMART data or other diagnostics are off you should be able to return it.

And don't be fooled by Amazon's "Seagate Store" page, it's all BS and Seagate will tell you to go fuck yourself if you try to claim that's an official store.
>>
>>106516121
buy an old optiplex off ebay and then just take the hard drive out and chuck the computer unless for an XP build
>>
>>106516491
The fuck is it then?

get the manufacturers firmware flashing utility. download the correct firmware from mfr website. verify with checksum in terminal. rewrite the firmware to the drive. in theory it should work. more steps to check included firmware first. better to just overwrite firmware with known good copy. idk, maybe that would work. avoid third party sellers. buy direct in store if you can.

Buy SSD, they can't fake them.

If you have a brain you will buy ex-enterprise servers with dell branded HDDs and you will be HAPPY! (for cents on the dollar)

I hope this post is some manifestation of an ABI, rather than representing a genuinely held belief by someone.

I have that case.

Yellow asian, 7/11 asian or suicide vest asian?

I haven't bought a new HDD in ages, so doesn't bother me. It's always used/refurbished. There is almost no point in buying new HDD's as a consumer.

why? did he drown because it was locked?

That's more of a complexity of how Amazon works rather than it being fake or anything.
It links to all the Seagate products, but all of those products are actually sold by other parties.
Here's a link to their 12TB Ironwolf Pro that links back to their store page.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07J351T2V
But looked at the "Dispatches from" and "Sold by" fields. If you've been served the same purchase option as me (which does also vary) you'll see that it's actually being sold by "thetechproltd". It gets even worse because Amazon co-mingles its stock, so even if thetechproltd is selling legitimately new drives, they'll get mixed in with what other sellers claim are new drives too, and you just get one from that pile at random.

Malaysia, so yes, probably all of the above.

Like how people figured out you could buy used speakers for cheap hdds are the same. Markets fucked they are not cheap and any ones that are will die randomly within 12 months

For WD you can check serial numbers to see if it was sold to a vendor or OEM, when it was sold, manufactured, origin country, warranty, etc. I'm guessing other manufacturers must have a similar system.

Why would you use the word "raid" in the context of hard drives to refer to something other than a raid array? Are they purposely trying to confuse their readers? Oh wait I see now that it was written by a stupid fucking chink.

it's clearly just a play on words, headlines do them all the time, if you found this confusing you must be autistic
i've got zoomer autism fatigue shit's tiring

what's the point of telling us all this if you guys have no idea how to tell if its fake or genuine

All HDDs are "genuine" in that there is no companies outside of the actual drive makers with any ability to make HDDs.
The issue is that people are taking used HDDs and wiping the smart/usage data off them and passing them off as new.

This is somewhat done officially by Seagate and the other manufacturers when they "recertify" HDDs but they are explicitly labeled as recertified on the HDD itself and not presented as new.

The problematic drives are drives that aren't labeled that way, that are actually used but the smart data implies they are brand new.
These drives can sneak into official retail channels where people that are expecting an actual new drive are sold a used one but with the usage data removed. It's otherwise extremely hard to tell physically anything is wrong as even years old drives can look flawless physically.
