I don't get it.Why is this still not the standard?
low trust society
>>106516153Bag my groceries, wagie scum
>>106516153>working for freeSlave mentality
>>106516153A certain demographic steals. A lot. And those make it easier to do so.
Corpo suits need to feel powerful enough to force wagie slaves to treat customers like criminals. It gets them hard.
>>106516208fpbp
>>106516153>too difficult for boomers to use>too easy for niggers to steal
>>106516153waiting in line suckswaiting in line to self serve sucksat the end of the daythe cashier can be a tard in your community making some bucks and feeling productiveso fuck automation for this social experience and fuck grocery store jews
it's much slower than an even middling cashier
>>106516153it takes longer to scan the items, and the new systems are retarded, like they have cameras and weigh the things and it always makes false positives ,like bitch I scanned the item and put it in the cart, and now you are telling me to remove it and scan it again? What?i'd rather have 60 year old Dorothy scan my items, she does it in 0 seconds
>>106516299oh for sure, and even looking at it in a day way. you can track when their register opens, how long it takes the customer to complete the debit transaction. average rate of ringing items up.some stores have leaderboards and actually highlight the superior workers using this kind of calculation. thats pretty cool to me, not that im encouraging grinding harder. but, pay the winners a lot more? everyone else works a bit harder, shares tips, etc.
>>106516153cashier checks you possible discounts coupons procuct dates and takes your beer if you are too drunk
>>106516153
When they first came out there was at least $5 of change underneath every machine. I would drop a coin down there on purpose and sweep out like $10 while I was at it.
>>106516236real slave mentality is thinking bagging someone's groceries can be even considered as working
>>106516327>and takes your beercan't even buy beer at the autoteller. adult cc, adult membership card? get fucked, stand there until staff can confirm your age
>>106516153i realized this is being encouraged because it discourages people from "bulk buying"which requires you to plan ahead and make a huge list and then wait in line for like 2 hours while u have to wait with other smart people getting huge discounts and bulk purchases.it sucks that you have to wait but youre also saving a lot of money.now in the opposite, this encourages you to be a consumer basically someone that goes to the market everyday and buys some cheap trash junk.
>>106516299Not if I buy just 1 or 2 items, which in any store next to a school or university is the case for almost all customers in the store at set times. Low trust society and general inconpetence of most ppl with tech (customer and employee) hinders it.
>>106516396>child opinionok buddy
>>106516153It is in the UK. In the USA they're actually removing self-checkouts in places because of theft.
>>106516393anon believe it or not stores actually like when you buy a lot of stuff from them
>>106516436read what i said tardobulk buyers lose them moneythey want u coming in impulse buying cheap shit every couple days not once a month with coupons
>>106516446a large foodstore near me just took out a big chunk of the human-run tills and replaced with self checkouts, and this new self checkout area is specifically designed for trolleys/large purchases. you're talking out of your ass schizo. I think it's an issue of what area you live in. in california shoplifting is basically legal now so stores are taking extra security measures by eg. ripping out self checkouts
>>106516393Here they actually encourage you to have brown people do your grocery shopping for you and picking it up. They regularly give steep discounts ($25 off orders of $100, with no fee to pickup) that makes not using pajeet to do your shopping a bad deal. They miss your items and generate tons of customer service issues atleast 30% of the time and I don't fucking know why they want to do this shit to their stores, but here we are.
>>106516153Because they're slow, unreliable and require staffing anyway to handle errors and age verification and such. Of course, since the idea is to boost the store's profits through firiing people rather than help you, they're also usually woefully understaffed and you stand there waiting for five minutes for the girl to come over and swipe her card or whatever.
>>106516153It pretty much is here. They keep a few legacy lanes open for the oldies but there's at least 20 of these things in every grocery store here and there's less cashiers every year
>>106516153these are the standard even in high theft cities like philadelphia / nyc
>>106516153Too slow. Scan as you go with a handheld scanner is way better.
>>106516493all jeets here, they dont even have to be polite or nice or know how to scan things or speak english. just swipe card when someone looks at them
>>106516512They trialled those at a Safeway near me in the mid-90s. They were fucking cool and made me actually want to go shopping as a kid so I could scan stuff. But then they got rid of them after a while and I've never seen them anywhere else again. Presumably because a certain demographic would just steal them, along with other people breaking them by dropping them and such.
>>106516310>everyone else works a bit harder, shares tipsHow long before there's a tip jar for the grocery cashier?
>>106516153It is in europe, they kinda sucked at the start but now it's very rare to have any problems with these.
*Yaaaaawns* in blaaaaaaaacks
>>106516153Self checkout was shit in 1995 and it hasn't improved at all. Brick and mortar stores will not survive if they don't staff their checklanes. If I'm going to check out my own groceries, I'll do it online.
>>106516261>be me>go into a Dollar Tree to get some plastic bullshit>self checkout is closed, probably because shoplifters>self checkout obstructs employee's view of the front of the store>homeless dude grabs like 6 Red Bulls and walks outJust rip out the self checkouts. Nobody wants them.
why not just replace the entire store with vending machine-type shelves?you get a card when you walk in and you have to swipe it to get an item out of the shelf, you present your card when you leave where your payment is made by a human or a computer.highly secure by nature and you can't shoplift because you need a card that tracks when items are being dispensed.
>>106516993the trend is towards either online shops that deliver food at home, or membership required to enter a store so its easier for the store to procecute thieves they detect from camera footage
>>106516512we should put a chip in someones palm instead and they can just pick up an item and it gets automatically bought
>>106516993ive been thinking about this for yearsif a rich anon is larping here this is a multi-billion dollar ideafuck it also make it a drive-tru windowcrash publix, walmart and target into the ground
>>106516153because the system relies on you being honest and turns out a lot of people are not
>>106516261The box stores know this even if they won't admit it for politically correct reasons.Regardless these stores algorithmically weigh the cost of personnel running registers/bagging against the attrition rate of the stores. They basically know people will steal, what matters is did shoplifiting cost them more than labor. For most of these stores the answer to that question is no.Congrats on raising the minimum wage to 15 dollars by the way.
I believe in East Asia (relatively high trust), these are prevalentcombined with their convenience store culture, some even let you have free reign of their utilities
>>106516208I'm in Brazil and every supermarket i go have it as an option.
How is this not the standard? I haven't seen the cash registers manned even at peak store hours in over 10 years
>>106516153As I am not a mentally handicapped socially inept person, I prefer to have a fellow human to scan my items. Its faster. I put my groceries on the counter, they scan it and I finish sooner.
is it true that in glorious nippon they have wireless, automatic self checkout?
>>106516153they are the standardI still prefer the cashier if I can but there's typically only one available with a line of like 10 people, then one or two people watching over the 10 self check outs
>>106516153These came up in a conversation IRL about a year ago. Apparently older, polite suburbanites get REALLY annoyed when there's a weight mismatch and the machine asks if they want to call the attendant.Based on the convo, they were so duped by the technology that they thought it was some advanced AI, and furthermore thought that it was accusing them of a crime. The machine either (a) mismeasured a weight, or (b) has a timer, and is offering to help so that they don't hold up the line like a putz. I didn't know how to politely tell them that they are morons for anthropomorphizing an overgrown bathroom scale. It's like being offended by a pocket calculator. If it bitches about the weight? Pick up the item, place it in again, jiggle the bag. It will re-calculate and shut up. Something doesn't scan? Enter the UPC in the PLU menu. That's all the assistant is going to do, and I'm faster than them anyway.
I liked them because I could go shopping high and not worry about having to make eye contact with anyone or talk
>>106516153Cuz sometimes you need them to weigh your fruit and veggies.
>>106516153Wdym, they are in nearly every store.
>>106517217No, even self checkout is not that common.
>>106516153prove me wrong:When i interview for a job, the company doesn't compensate me for my time. Therefore when i see food I've never tasted before at the supermarket, I have the right to taste it for free.
>>106517951i have been bamboo-zled
>>106517410post nose
>>106516153I've still never used one. I don't drive, and so don't travel far. All of my local stores don't have self check out areas. None of them. I'm kind of afraid of the first day I have to learn those things. I'll probably look like a fool!
Shop at healthy organic food stores and you won't have to wait in a line, and there is always some hot girl checking you out. People who shop at these big grocery stores full of poison are the lowest class people and they get the worst treatment.
what 3rd world country do you live in? it is the standard
>>106516153those machines work very badly and break all the time. it's a false economy since now you dont need bag ladies but now you need an attendant for every few consoles.here in canuckistan they're all over the place but like I said they barely work so there's still attendants who have to come over when you dare do something like "place item in the bagging area" and someone who works there has to log in to make the machine stop complaining
>>106517217no but they had it in some place in europe for a bit. amazon also tried to do it but realized that amazon's entire point for existing is to not have to go to a store and gave up on trying to make Wal*Mart But Automated
Where I live with high minimum wage they have an employee stand and watch all the checkout stations at most stores anyways. So they pay as much as having another cashier. It only saves time vs waiting for the senior citizen to slowly unload their cart, or someone to have ebt arguments on declines or trying to get big change back for drugs. If you get neither in front of you the cashier is more efficient. The space to stack things self checkout is so small you can only do minimal shopping without crushing things. If you try to make room it errors seeing the changed weight.
I don't know what rest rest of you are bitching about, I haven't used anything but self-checkout for the last decade, and the only issue I've ever had is that the barcode printer they use for marked down stuff is crap and I have to call the attendent over to type in a number for my half-price steak sometimes.
>>106516153>make a mistake ringing yourself out>straight to jailNo thank you
i am whitei am not autistici like to chat with the cashier, bagger, and (if there's a line) other customers while they ring up my stuff
>>106518855my local grocery store doesnt even bother trying. it's just a big round "2$ OFF!!!" and no barcode so you HAVE to call an attendant and get outed as a poorfag
>>106516208Just say niggers.
>>106518890That doesn't out you for shit. That's one of several reasons to have to call an attendant
>>106516153>go to walmart for the first time in a while>everything is locked up behind cages or plexiglass cabinets that you need to hail a wagie for to unlock>they have like 15 self-checkouts>almost all of them are closed except for a row of 4 that were open>go up to one>wagie comes up to me and says "sorry you can only use these if you're using the app, there's a register that's open you can go to">look toward the 20 or so registers>all but one is closed and the open one has a line of people with full carts>I have just one (1) item that I'm trying to check out with>ignore the wagie and the app requirement turned out to be a lie and I scanned and checked out my item anyway
Theft is the most obvious answer, but stores RENT self checkout machines which defeats the purpose of whatever cost savings they theoretically would provide, in smaller stores. Everything is behind a subscription, if you work in a factory you quickly find out modern appliances of every industry are rented, and they come with mandatory service contracts. You could hire some geeks to setup something like it with barcode scanners, but you'd have to pay for the scanning program to create your own barcodes and set your own prices. The thing with rented checkout machines is they are setup to track everything by default and the better ones will give you automated statistics about sales, which maybe those geeks would charge you extra to implement. Realistically those geeks won't sell anything to you, they want to rent it out, or put restrictions on its use so you can't move it or fix it yourself if something breaks.
>>106518924why does walkmart self-checkout has a camera that shows my face? I'm thinking about spray the camera with paint next time.
>>106516153losses at self checkout are major, I work loss prevention in Target. Self checkout makes people not willing to conceal shit willing to steal with ticket swicthing, skip scanning, etc
>>106518971fun tip, idk if it is true at walmart but it is at target - the view you see on the camera is literally not recorded (wtf btw, it would get great face shots) but you are recorded from hidden angles
>>106516153Remember when Amazon had "high tech" stores without cash registers that supposedly used sensors to determine what you took and charged you later? Turns out it was just Indians watching you remotely. AI: An Indian.
>>106518986I'd be surprised if that was true at Walmart. They have a kink for recording everything and have their own datacenter for it
>>106518993target is high tech too, the FBI actually uses Target labs for some shit
>>106518992i thoguht it was just that everything had rfid tags on it
>>106519004>>106518993the reason the camera that shows you saying "recording" doesn't is some bullshit codec licensing shit btw lmfaoif target just paid up they'd absolutely have faceshots high quality enough for facial recognition (that police do use in my area anyway) but they literally just show the image on a monitor and say you're being recorded
>>106519014That's how people imagined it worked, but those AI-powered stores were just jeets.https://www.businessinsider.com/amazons-just-walk-out-actually-1-000-people-in-india-2024-4
