Learn protocols. Pick a protocol, pull it apart.
>DHCP: learn the DORA process, learn about scope options
>HTTP: learn the basic methods, learn status codes, learn how to fuck w/ headers, learn how to parse basic stuff like base64 encoding, urlencoding
>DNS: learn the record types, learn how DNS actually works, learn how to force a lookup, learn about TTL
A lot of infosec is knowing about tangential, semi-related things and having enough to know "hey, this doesn't look right".
A LOT of foreign infosec are just process monkeys that can't think on their feet and freeze when confronted with ambiguity
Be able to explain your process, from beginning to end.
