The business was never actually sustainable and was just burning VC money and now that money is drying up so they have to actually discover a sustainable business model 2.) They have a sustainable business model, but investors want to see more growth and the only way that can happen is if they squeeze everyone just a bit more. This keeps happening until they squeeze so hard everyone leaves.
You prevent it by starting a new, more nimble and more appealing competitor that steals their thunder so you can do the same thing yourself and get rich too.
