I purchased this recently for $2000. Was it a good decision? It was on sale, the best specs I could find for the price and form factor. It has a fit and finish approaching a modern MacBook (although a slightly thicker design, but not much) and it can run all muh games at ultra settings at 120 fps or above. More importantly, I think it'll be good for tinkering with LLMs and for productivity. I may dual boot Linux on it.Battery life is okay at around 6 real world hours on battery with minimal tweaking (using the integrated graphics only), and in performance mode it really does run quite well.I have a week to return it, though. Thoughts? Can I do better for the same price or less without sacrificing anything big? My other laptops include an old MBP and a ThinkPad x220.specs:3k 120hz OLED display with G-Sync (looks great in static images, does not particularly impress me in motion)AMD 9 HX 3705070 Ti (laptop), I think it's slightly underpowered to fit in such a small chassis, but I don't really know any better and it's still the most powerful GPU I've ever used, I think.good speakers, decent keyboard, overall just a nice build.
>>106519440I just checked and with the browser open with many tabs and some miscellaneous things in the background, Windows 11's battery estimator suggests about 8 hours of use from a full charge. I value this versatility a lot.
>>106519440>OLED>3K@14 inchMemetopFiltered>AsusHoly Obsolescence...
Well, it would seem that nobody cares, but if anyone has any questions or comments, I will attempt to address them if this thread is still up in the morning. Enjoy your technology, /g/.
>>106519612>Holy Obsolescence...I am not too confident in Asus, but I think it's difficult to claim that it is worse than most other major brands. The build quality is actually quite decent from what I can tell just by using it.>Memetop>FilteredYour childish buzzwords don't really speak to me much, but it's true that the screen does not impress me, as I stated in the OP. I mainly purchased this because it seems to be at the intersection of portability/modern design and power. If there is something better, I would look into it. Do you have any suggestions?
>>106519466>Windows 11's battery estimator suggests about 8 hours of use from a full chargeit jumped to 9+ hours with energy saving mode on from the notification area.one thing I strongly dislike about Windows and this setup: there are at least 4 different programs/settings menus, each with its own performance mode settings. not including the notification area.
>>106519626Sure, check out the Lenovo Legion series
One thing I do like about it: it is actually silent with the fan totally off in silent mode. Very comfy.
>>106519641>Sure, check out the Lenovo Legion seriesdo you have a specific recommendation to save me some time? I can look around but I have to find something in the same price range/form factor. I suspect I can't do better for the price.Lenovo laptops do not impress me much more than Asus, except for the ThinkPad line, which is only marginally better, but significantly worse than the IBM machines they bought the brand from. The only models I can find are either lower powered and bigger but in a similar price range, or more expensive and bigger, nothing 14".I would probably settle for a larger machine but like I said I enjoy the versatility of this one quite a bit.
>>106519670>>106519641Thanks for the recommendation, but I can't find anything similar or comparable.>Lenovo Legion Pro 7: This model features a powerful AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX processor and a high-end NVIDIA RTX 5080. It has a similar OLED display but may exceed your budget slightly.Lenovo Legion 5 Pro: This is a more budget-friendly option with a solid AMD Ryzen 7 processor and RTX 4060 graphics. However, it lacks the OLED display and may not match the performance of your current laptop.Lenovo Legion 5i: Similar to the Legion 5 but with an Intel processor. It also features an IPS display, which is good but not as vibrant as OLED.It seems the Lenovo offerings are all 16" (or, worse, 15.6") shitters with either higher specs and a higher price, or lower specs and a similar price.
>>106519724>>106519641absolutely disgusting
>>106519734>>106519724So, after further research, I've found a Lenovo Legion 7 model for $2500 from Microcenter. It has a 5080 which is the best laptop GPU I have found in a machine under $3500. However, it has a shitty Intel CPU rather than the more recent AMD CPUs which are significantly more efficient, and it's a 16" monster laptop that looks like a toddler riced it out. It is difficult to leave performance on the table at a similar price point, but there is little comparison to the 14" streamlined machine referenced in the OP.
>>106521017Depends which series of intel. If it's a 100 or 200 series, they are more efficient than AMD for web browsing and watching videos. If you're gaming, yes Intel uses more power and but another problem is that manufacturers artificially gimp the GPUs for AMD models.

looks great in all things but one. why 14 inch, apple's small is better faggotry? that's way too small. a 16 laptop is still portable enough and it has more screen real estate and room for better cooling and battery.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1L58c7-Pzxw
>>106519440Looks pretty, but I tried typing on one of these at microcenter and the keyboard was horrible.
>>106519440>was buying a gaming laptop a good decision.
>>106522661>all things but one. why 14 inchWell, look at the alternative: >>106519734It is a giant, ugly/childish-looking machine. It is more powerful, with the trade-off of being a desktop replacement or something more akin to a mobile workstation. The G14 can serve as a true laptop when you're not gaming on it, while that simply can't. It's still portable and such but it's very different. I'm open to a desktop replacement, but only if it offers a lot more, which that really doesn't. I've seen some Razr models that are larger but still portable, but they have poor longevity according to reviews.>Better cooling and batteryThe 16" above has worse battery life, and while the cooling is better, all that matters in practice is that it's sufficient for the thermal package. The Zephyrus 16" but it's $3500-4500 new and also has some trade-offs>>106523442A desktop is still much more powerful, but mobile GPUs have come a long way.

>>106519440>Was it a good decision? No.>Can I do better for the same price or less without sacrificing anything big?Yes, with a Macbook.Crippled x86 machines in laptop form factor are an outdated meme.
>>106524907I'd be surprised if the Macbook's integrated GPU is even 1/3rd as performant as the 5070 Ti
>>106523442how dare you post a laughing parrot gif in this thread?
>>106525759but what did he mean for better? because my $1700 mbpro does perform so much better in a lot of the stuff he described, although not for intensive graphics
>>106524517>Well, look at the alternativeg16 would be my choice if price is good. i have a 15 inch laptop and i think 16 is the sweet spot. it still fits in my backpack and it's both compact and big.
The only computer worth $2,000 is a desktop.Laptops only make sense if you don’t or can’t own a desktop and should be between $700-$1,000.I am far more productive with a desktop and using tablets in the middle (whether for writing, productivity, or messaging)
>>106527511>because my $1700 mbpro does perform so much better in a lot of the stuff he describedlike what?>>106527935>g16 would be my choice if price is good.I get what you're saying, it's thin enough and looks decent enough that the extra size wouldn't bother me too much or get in the way, I think. Still, there's the price, like you said. It's $2800 for the 5070 Ti model and $3500 for the 5080 model. That would be a difference of about $750 after tax for the same GPU. The screen seems much better on the 16", but I don't know if I can justify the extra price with the same GPU, or the significantly higher price (+$1400) with the somewhat faster (10-15%?) GPU. The screen and other specs seem nicer, but it's also less portable. It seems to really come down to price and size for me based on the other specs. The additional $1400 is about 2/3 of the way toward a high end desktop... it's hard for me to justify that just for a "gaming" laptop, even if it's a nice one.It looks like the 2024 16" was recently on sale for $2400, and that one has an Ultra 9 185H and a RTX 4080. Personally, I'd prefer the AMD CPU.One thing I like about the 14" is that I can run games on 1920x1200 and they don't look much worse than 2880x1800, so if I ever have to turn down the settings a little, that will help. I think I'll just end up keeping this one.
>>106528012>and using tablets in the middleThe new Flow Z13 looks pretty nice, but it starts at $2000, and while performance is great for what it is, it isn't comparable to a 5070 Ti.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDLldTZzsXg
>>106524907>>106527511how's the Mackboog for LLMs compared to the dedicated 5070 Ti with 12GB VRAM in the G14?
>>106519440>runs all the game on max at 120fps>with DLSS Ultra Performance upscaled from 360p to 1080pFTFY
>>1065281882880x1800 on utlra mostly, but idk how it will perform in bf6 which is the only recent title i will play. everything else though from the last 5ish years runs great. bfv runs pretty good on ultra at "3k" but it's buttery smooth at 1920x1200 all max settings
>>106528258>>106528188(DLSS disabled)also gsync on a laptop is great. though freesync is fine too
