I don't use AI because it's bad for the environment. Even if there were a service that provably uses 100% clean energy (there isn't), the water usage by the cooling systems is unacceptable.
Ok
>>106528236>the water usage by the cooling systems is unacceptableThat's even more contextual than the clean energy thing. Water usage is only a "problem" in areas where water is limited, like in Texas draining non-renewable aquifers. But here in the Great Lakes region, there's not really any water shortage of note. You have a problem with a data centre in Norway, running off hydroelectric power, no shortage of local freshwater because the mountains collect tons of it, and lower cooling requirements to begin with due to more favourable temperature deltas with the average outdoor temperature? Why is AI the problem, and not video streaming or the internet at large?
gay thread meant to push the other thread about ai and create more retarded discussion
>>106528236I don't use AI because it's a glorified search engine that provides bullshit answers that are incoherent 1/3 of the time, and image generation is useless to me because I have two hands and know how to draw basic diagrams/mockups if I need them. The energy/water consumption thing is bad too.
I'm worried that there seems to be people who genuinely believe that datacenters somehow delete water from existence, or that it is the only industry that utilizes water.
>>106528236There are so many things that are bad for the environment this is a non-issue.AI is cringe though
How often do you change your liquid coolant of you car faggot? You know turbines use something similar and its not actual "water" that get consumed? Its reused like on cars or your fridge, so no actual water get wasted.
>>106528236your life is bad for the environment. you know what to do.
>>106528236The power grid isn't an on-demand thing, the energy is always being generated and present along the service lines. You using less of it doesn't change a thing.
>>106528236>posted on the internet that has online shopping polluting the water system
>>106529327>The power grid isn't an on-demand thingIt is to an extent, actually. Load-following and peak power plants spin up additional turbines to balance load to match demand. There's always SOME power generation happening, but the output and fuel use is not consistent throughout a single day, nevermind a week.
I think the average question consumes 6 gallons of water for cooling purposes. Due to risk to water availability, AI will be used exclusively by the rich. It was never the people's technology and dystopia has been here for decades.
>>106528305>Large bodies of water are a limitless resource even if theyre too polluted to use
I've been really let down by AI lately, especially with coding. The LLM bubble will soon popAI is way more exciting when I'm playing around with ComfyUI leveraging the different strengths of small local models and becomes this fun slot machine pastime, far more interesting than these reddit scraping, dumbed down SaaS chatbot front ends, made of course for low-IQ smartphone normies
>>106528236Don't worry I'll double my usage to cancel you out. It's no problem.
>>106528236All the AI datacenters in Texas use less than 500 million gallons of water per year.Illegal aliens in Texas use 5.7 billion gallons of water per year.
>>106529490Hmm, do I want fruits and vegetables or 11 data centers.
>>106528236What if I'm running it on a 200watt max mini PC at home?
Meme farming>catfish farming in the eyes of the law
I use AI because following the last releases I can tell it's not slowing down and we'll achieve AGI soon
>>106528236>it's bad for the environmentEverything is. What is your heuristic?
>>106528236I will use AI thrice as much in your honor because fuck you.
>>106528236I use AI because it's bad for the environment. I would pay more money if I could pollute the air a bit more.
