>>106528809To preface, assume I am completely retarded. After buying 3 work laptops over the past 10 years I'm fed up with the garbage. I want to create something future proof and found a lot of the longest lasting laptops of old had a massive amount of modularity not seen in modern builds.I'm looking for a modern laptop motherboard with a socketed CPU that can be drastically upgraded that way it can be "future proofed" to a greater extent and want to know if I came up with the right board. What I'm looking for:>Must have a modern CPU socket that has a wide range of highly advanced CPU's.>needs to be thin enough to fit into a sleeper PC case. (roughly 8 x 8 x 1.5 inches)>Compatible with NVME M.2>Has a good amount of RAM and storage potentialWhat I found:X600tm-itx>96GB of DDR5 SO-DIMM RAM>two M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 x4 slots>6.7 x 6.7 x 1.7inIf I did everything right, would this board have a long life?

>>106529510Provided you're not running HEPA filters, case fans don't have to do much to be effective. They'll be fine.
>>106529604I've seen it, it's a really neat product. What kills it for me is the lack of a CPU socket. It's been my bottleneck on nearly every PC Storage is cheap, RAM is limited put replicable. Every board on the market is soldered. Unless your a hardware engineer there is no upgrading it period. You need a whole new board and at that point, most people buy a new laptop. To put it into perspective:Thinkpad l440Made in 2013 (12 years)4th gen Haswell sockets top at a i7-4910MQCurrently a mid range CPU, which still runs windows 10 well. An AM5 socket means when the Ryzen 7 9800X3D eventually drops down in price and even better CPU's come out I can just swap them in. Removing that bottle neck and potentially making the RAM the limiting factor. The only downside I could see was the 65W TDP draw. Which could potentially limit the range of future CPU's the board might see.Outside of that I can choose my own battery type and screen. All of which I'd maximize modularity with.
>>106529708>Ryzen 7 9800X3D>$400 >for an 8 core CPUAnd that made for the nvidioits paypiggies
>>106529708>The only downside I could see was the 65W TDP draw. You should check the supported CPU list; a 9800X3D isn't available. The options appear limited to CPUs with an official Default TDP of 65W.https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/X600TM-ITX/index.asp#CPU

>>106529765thats quintessentially reddit combo.
>>106529736It's all relative. Eventually CPU prices will drop and it will end up on the chopping block like every other "gaming performance" CPU before it. The end result is that it's fairly fast. Even if I get a slower CPU I can wait till prices come down to get a better boost rather then tossing the entire motherboard.>>106529750Good save, thank you. Seeing the list their still very good CPU's for the current year. What's the scope for 65 watt in the future? I'd assume they'd still go pretty far as it looks like developments still moving forward into mobile and lighter devices. As long as the power standards still good they will keep pumping out better CPU's. I understand eventually the format will see it's end with the next gen of CPU but I think it's a decent investment over the traditional BGA or LGA soldered CPU's.

>>106530448On the off chance you're still here, here's how to select a power supply:1. Add up your CPU+GPU's actual power draw under full synthetic load. Call this number X.2: Add up your CPU+GPU power draw under your typical "high load" conditions. Use reviews to get the numbers (TPU is good here). If it's gaming it'll usually be the GPU's TDP plus 50-100W for the CPU (though some top-end CPUs pull more). Call this number Y.3. Pick a supply wattage "Z" where Z ≥ X+100 and Y ∈ (0.4*Z, 0.8*Z). Lean towards more wattage if you can afford it but don't push it so far that your idle draw goes below 0.05*Z.

>>106532003When to Choose PCIe 4.0:Your system doesn't support Gen5 (e.g., older CPU/motherboard).Budget is a concern—Gen4 offers the best value per GB.Workloads are light to moderate: Gaming, web browsing, photo editing, or basic productivity. The speed difference isn't perceptible in Windows boot times or app launches. You prioritize lower heat/power (e.g., in laptops or small-form-factor PCs).Most users fall here—Gen4 is "fast enough" for 95% of scenarios in 2025.When to Choose PCIe 5.0:You have (or plan to buy) Gen5-compatible hardware and want to maximize its potential.Heavy professional use: Frequent large file transfers (e.g., raw video footage), scientific simulations, or virtual machines where sustained high speeds matter.Future-proofing a new build—e.g., if you're investing in a top-tier setup and expect to keep it for 5+ years. You're okay with higher costs and potential cooling needs (many Gen5 drives include active cooling fans, which can add noise). In summary, PCIe enables blazing-fast data transfer for M.2 drives by scaling bandwidth with lanes and versions. Unless you have a specific need for extreme speeds and compatible hardware, stick with PCIe 4.0—it's more practical and cost-effective for most people. If you're unsure about your system's compatibility, check your motherboard specs (e.g., via the manufacturer's site) or run a tool like CPU-Z/HWInfo.
>>106532003don’t bother with a PCIe 5.0 drive unless you’re doing something like editing 4k video, PCIe is backwards compatible and a 4.0 drive will work in a 5.0 slot on a board
>>106531948I know 6 core is fine for gaming, casual usage and even GPU AI slop, but would an intel have been better for some of my more niche use cases like... I dunno, rendering/encoding video? unpopular pc opinion: DLSS4 and Framegen are like a magical 3x framerate button with minimal visual degradationI'm talking 40 FPS at native to 130+ with both. The latency isn't even bad, and the visuals are only noticeably degraded by DLSS's upscaling. The AI fake frames I haven't been able to notice even pixel peeping.
>>106532651DLSS is only good if the game heavily relies on TAA and the devs did not even attempt to try with their native TAA method. This is common for Unreal Engine 5 titles and developers.Framegen is bad no matter what. The latency can be mitigated somewhat but you can never get around the artifacts and additional overhead. AI can be good in some scenarios like CPU prefetch does a lot of black magic in huge datasets but in random scenarios / fast movements you encounter lots of cache misses and that hurts prefetch and AI.

Alternatively you could do a 12/13100 or 12400 to save a bit, regardless if you're trying to be cheap lga 1700 with a used board is probably the best bet. There are cheaper gpus but it's kind of hard to recommend anything second hand outside of the RTX 2000 cards with current prices.Used whole builds with am4 might also be worth it if you find something good locally. I hate how even the micro ATX cases are so huge. And the smaller ones all have interface at the bottom. You cannot even put it down below the table, because my in ear cables are not long enough. There is only literally the Asus Prime AP201 with the interface being located at the upper half. However the case is rather long/deep.Maybe I go for a cheap ass case on Amazon like the GAMDIAS Talos E3 Mesh, compact enough to be put on the table side ways and also fits below the desk.Plus it can fit an ATX board.

>>106534409Because they make more money with the current product segmentation. The 5090 has a massive chip; disabling half of its memory channels would still give you a 16GB config.GB202 (5090's chip design) is the only pure desktop/server PCIe-based GPU.Everything below it is designed to work on laptops; this partly explains the big performance gap between the 5090 & 5080.
