Is there any general way to be able to use a laptop strictly through power without it touching the battery? I know this seems something more suited to a Google search but there's so much conflicting information that I couldn't get a proper answer, sometimes apparently you could simply remove the battery and use it like that, sometimes apparently the laptop won't post without the battery. And there's a bunch of brand specific BIOS stuff that also depends on the laptop model and it's all so confusing.I will mainly be using my laptop intensely and I don't wanna kill the battery because of it, so in general is it bad if I constantly use it while it's plugged in? And if so what are some remedies?
There's no simple answer, it depends on the specific laptop.>in general is it bad if I constantly use it while it's plugged in?Yes>And if so what are some remedies?Charge limiting software. Set a charge limit somewhere between 50% (optimal for battery health but may not be practical) and 80%
>>106539063I see so It seems I really reached that conclusion, another question if you don't mind, apparently one of the more common issues with the no battery use case is the CMOS batteryAre they connected or work with the main battery in some way? Like in terms of BIOS and stuff
>>106538961Just take the battery out and run it on DC. Most laptops don't care. You can do it with battery too ignore this >>106539063 poor nigger who can't afford to replace a cheap consumable.
>>106539063>Set a charge limit somewhere between 69% (optimal for battery health but may not be practical) and 69%ftfy
>>106538961Battery double as the surge protector so no.The solution is to buy exclusively business laptop so you can buy the another battery
>>106539524It seems the worst that could happen to the laptop is a bios resetIn the event of a power outage, a desktop is also a similar risk, no?
my laptop's battery is broken but it still runs if i keep it plugged, i have no idea why it does this
>>106540218The huge ass power supply exists for a reason.
>>106539524>Battery double as the surge protector so no.lmao this is the kind of shit people post on a fucking tech board nowadays
>>106538961>845 G8I have that exact same laptop. Using it now. Questions?>>106539204>apparently one of the more common issues with the no battery use case is the CMOS battery>Are they connected or work with the main battery in some way?No they just don't exist. You already have a battery that's always connected, you don't need a coin cell as well.
>>106540487Oh that's excellent, well for the most basic question, are you satisfied by it overall? And in terms of other things, is the battery good enough for you? Does it perform well enough for your use cases? Does the screen satisfy your needs?>No they just don't exist. You already have a battery that's always connected, you don't need a coin cell as well. The 845 g8 repair video on hp's site shows them replacing the RTC battery which is coin shaped like a CMOS, now I currently don't know the difference between the 2 and if they are the same or not so I apologize if I'm wrongOh and one more question actually, does the laptop have an "extreme performance" option that boosts the tdp? Could be in windows or the BIOS most likely
>>106538961I've moved onto tablets, better battery life unironically.
>>106540729I'm using this as a desktop replacement I don't really care about battery life
i have a lenovo thinkbook and yes there is an option in the bios to bypass the batteryif you'll never need the battery then just remove it. if it doesnt post you can always put it back in.if you cant do either, then smart charging (limiting to 80%) will be better than nothing. w11 features this, as does recent ubuntu versions (25.x)
Just use the fucking battery in whatever way you want then get a replacement when it shits the bed, stop worrying about degradation nothing last forever
>>106540729This is a 18+ site kiddo
>>106539510The funny number is 67 now, unc
>>106541179True but my use case (video games honestly) can get pretty hot which would rapidly degrade the battery more then usual
It used to be more common in older laptops where you could easily physically detach the battery. Nowadays, I really doubt it's possible in most cases. I wouldn't worry, just run the battery and replace it when the performance of it becomes unacceptable to you. You'll likely get a few good years out of it.
>>106541319You can still detach the batteries easily. Just that they are no longer external.
>>106541281Actually the cold fuck them more
