Inside the case it IS flat on the back as well as the front. If Apple added extra battery, that would add weight; that would add explosive liability; that would decrease the planned obsolecense. So you can understand why Apple would like you to buy a phone with a thin battery with a shorter total lifespan and no battery door. It means you have to keep buying new phones.
