Why did AMD CPUs get so much hate before Ryzen in 2017? Were they really that bad?
The AMD K6 could be easily bricked after overheating (a broken cooler was sufficient for dooming the K6). Other than that, I know of no hate.
>>106550526Still using a Phenom II as my daily driver.
>>106552093How viable is AM3 nowadays
>>106550526bulldozer was pretty fucking worthlessthe only thing it had going is that you could overclock it to like 8ghz with little effort
>>106550526yeah, they had the same chip for like 3 generations. It had 8 weak cores in an era where most things want 2-4 strong cores. They were kinda bad for gaming, They could be decent for media creation until you get to the high end.
>>106552099You mean the socket? Not sure if anyone makes AM3 motherboards anymore but there might still be some old new stock hanging around. As far as the processors go, I don't do heavy gaming and that's mostly GPU anywhere. Beside general web stuff like posting here, I do data analysis and 3d modeling. Neither requires cutting edge or ever recent hardware.
>>106550526something about having "fake core count" a cpu would be marketed as 8 core but they are actually 4. it did actually have 8 cores, but some of their components were shared, so it didn't perform like an actual 8 core CPU. they also over heated alot
>>106550526One of the biggest issues was Intel would release a new CPU and then everyone would turn their head to AMD expectantly hoping for some new killer CPU and AMD would sorta shrug and say >hey man, check out this 6 core cpu. pretty sick, right? More gigahertz too!and then benchmarks would come out and Intel's quad cores were still a smarter buy for gaming and single-thread tasks. AMD would occasionally take a lead in workstation tasks like rendering but always at the cost of higher heat and more power draw. Budget gaming they always got a nod though. Intel's Core-i3s would put up a fight but AMD was relevant in the <$100 price point.
>>106550526>Were they really that bad?Yes, AMD's comeback was quite the impressive underdog moment back then. Intel Arc will yield the same fruits and intel will likely abandon a large chunk of the consumer market CPU game excluding their niche CPU's like low power consumption Atom processors.Mark my words the new poorfag meta for new PC builders will be a Ryzen 5 paired with a Arc B50.
Phenom was a bit underwhelming but cheap and good enough on a budget (at least later on).FX was just a shitshow from start to finish. It also got really cheap which gave it some value but even then its flaws were obvious and nasty compared to the Phenoms in their own period.
