Just werks free software for translating manga/hentai? I'm tired of paying for proprietary SaaS just to coom and no, I'm not learning japanese.

My gut reaction to this is that no one's going to read google translated scans but on a second thought the funniest bit about this is that machine translations of manga or anime would probably be significantly more correct than average text because of their largely simple language and patterns that aren't as evident in normal human communication, especially if the translator were to be purpose built and trained on this garbage I feel it would indistinguishable

Yeah, if the reading order can be identified beforehand, feeding the entire chapter into an LLM would also make context aware translation possible, I guess that's what Ichigo or nekotranslate are doing. We need some /g/ autist make a FOSS that's on pair in quality.

No idea but here's a bump.

As an avid ex enjoyer I can say that MTL is already used and is an issue as it is not good. That said the general meaning is usually understood such that you can proofread and correct it with minimal interactions with the source material. So yes such software already exists. The issues are that:
OCR is not solved for CJK languages, esp. Japanese as there is less training data and most researchers in the field are chinks not japs
(In fact you are more likely to have some tranime faggot make an Japanese OCR than an actual Japanese)
Japanese is not as gendered as English, so often the translation software will need to make a guess for pronouns. This should not be an issue with current AI models though, which are especially good at translation. You may need to tell it which characters are male or female at the start of the prompt though.
You still need to re-typeset everything at least for now.
I read xianxia using OCR to look up words I don't know and it works well but is somewhat taxing.

Android phone, Google lens, translate.

Your gut feeling is wrong because ESL thirdies do that as a grift on MangaDex (or used to kek) for "donations"

let me guess, you need more?

Google lens didn't really work for me as it cannot put together right to left top to down reading. It translated each top to down string seperately. And besides the reader experience is not that good if you have to fuck with each page instead of just once.

The vast majority of "fan translation" work out there these days is OCR MTL shit. It was the vast majority over a decade ago, I can't imagine how bad it is these days with jeets using AI to try and get a few rupees on patreon.

You're not going to find a good free one size fits all solution, unless you make it yourself. OCR is perfectly good enough (for anything that isn't handwritten, at least), MTL is "good enough" for retards, it was good enough a decade ago and now all that has changed is an LLM tries to fix the grammar before it serves it up to you.

The actual solution to your issue is just spending 30 minutes a day learning Japanese, but instead you will be forever at the whims of garbage tools pumping out gibberish, while you go "it's fine, I get the gist of the plot anyway" to cope. I used to do this 15 years ago for H-games, I get it, but at some point you get sick of the hassle and inconsistencies and just learn Japanese instead.

I do. Not drawing over each kanji one by one from every single text bubble.
