Together with not releasing QPR1 source, google started to delay open-sourcing security patches by 4 months, while still distributing the patches to a wide range of partners.

They also stopped publication of the device trees for pixel devices.

Next year you can't even install any software that isn't verified by google.

It's
Fucking
Over

kek you can't even unlock the bootloader on chinese phones anymore retard you think the most censored state in the world will help you?
>>

>most censored state
but china allows criticism of israel
>>
>>106561097
go criticize the CCP or Xi in a public forum and see what happens.
even just saying it near your neighbor, they'll report you to the local police force and get your arrested to boost their social credit score
>>
>>106561029
good. literally no one go through the source code except huawei
>>
>no android source
>no sideloading
>new pixel hardware underperforms
Maybe google shouldn't control Android.
>>
>>106561183
they're preparing for antitrust that will separate android from google
>>
>>106561102
>social credit score
they don't have a social credit score retard, but america does with the fico credit score
>>
>>106561183
it's too late. the alternatives suck, and there's an inherent negative stigma attached to mobile devices that makes talented devs steer away from them.
>>
>>106561102
>go criticize the CCP or Xi in a public forum and see what happens.
Why would I criticize Comrade Xi or the vanguard party that has led to the greatest improvement of the people's livelihood in human history?
Think before you write, anon
>>
>>106561183
They shouldn't, but they have everybody by the balls with the Google Mobile Services dependencies. Branching off will be a nightmare in a lot of area's.

its why i moved to iphone. if i am going to end up on a closed platform, i might as well be on the superior closed off platform.
android was only fun, and worth it, because it was open to mess with.

It is though. Things are already breaking by not being able to fully upgrade to QPR1. Them being able to extract some proprietary firmware from the stock OS and doing a GPL code request on the new kernel doesn't magically solve all problems.

>QPR1
QPRs are functionally vendor-specific updates since no other manufacturers care about those (and it will be the same for the upcoming "minor SDK version" thing, since it's just a different name for QPR2).
Sucks for graphene users, though.
>>106561250
They basically won on this front too
https://edition.cnn.com/2025/09/02/tech/google-antitrust-ruling-chrome-android
>Although Google will not be forced to sell of its Chrome browser or Android, it will have to make certain search data available to qualified competitors to promote competition. It will also be barred from entering into or maintaining exclusive contracts related to the distribution of services like Chrome, Search, the Google Assistant and its Gemini app.
>Google will still be allowed to pay partners to distribute its services – including its Search engine – on their products.

>>106561088
Why do you bring up the UK out of nowhere?
>>
How come the GPL doesn't prevent it?
>>
>>106561918
What are you talking about? It's already frozen since it has already been rolled out to pixel devices.
>>
>>106561029
You forgot the worst part.
You can't publish the source code unless it's older than 4 months, you have to sign a early access NDA to get the most up to date source code.
This lowers the security of everyone except Google, attackers such as NSO group (Mossad) will get access to source code anyway through leaks or internal spies in companies which have signed the NDA.

>>106561139
Mossad and other attackers sure do have it.

>>106561333
GrapheneOS has access to monthly security patches via a partnership with a hardware vendor. However it does not have access to quarterly Android releases. This is still a big problem even on GrapheneOS.

>>106563319
Some parts of the source code are not licensed under GPL.

all western countries use standarhized credit scores, this isn't only american thing. also even you checking your credit score is a red flag kek

One of the many reasons why I'm unironically buying an old Nokia 3310 to use as a main day-to-day phone. Screw all that smartphone shit.
>>
>>106561029
Hopefully this will give us more true Linux phones to choose from on the market.
>>
>>106561029
probably to fuck with the custom rom community.
>>
>>106561088
xiaomi and oneplus still allow bootloader unlocks.
it's just huawei that doesn't.
>>
>>106563705
>mossad has it
are you implying google isn't letting the mossad see the unreleased code?
>>
>>106563319
I think it's an apache2.0 license
even if it was gpl, the gpl doesn't force you to release code of unfinished products, technically it just requires you to provide the code to the users. So once it releases we may be under gpl territory, but not until then.
>>
>>106561029
jeets have completely taken over google
it's owari da
>>
>>106561266
+50 social credit
>>
>>106565513
I didn't say that. I meant to say that if Google wants to limit the up to date code to only trusted parties who signed the NDA, excluding or not excluding attackers would have no benefit as they would get the code anyway.
>>
>>106565248
Even when the 3310 was relevant, it could be completely remotely controlled by the modem, turning it in a remote listening device by any competent adversary. Honestly not useful for anything other than making a phone call and ripping out the battery right after. There is no security or privacy with that phone. Don't store any data you'd like to be private on it (like contacts). A phone with GrapheneOS on it without any app installs on it and no mobile data or WiFi/bluetooth is much better for that purpose.
