Anyone got any tips on which ones to buy? Always heard about bullshit related to proprietary expensive ink and similar stuff. What's the cheapest no-bullshit printer? I only need it for printing standard A4 paper.
If you can't find a >$20 Brother laser printer at a second hand store close to you with at least half of the toner life left in it, that's a skill issue... or you need to consider moving out of the third-world.
>>106562856for home usage? go with HP laserjet. don't need color printing? get a monochrome one. don't need wireless printing? get a wired one. toner will last a lifetime if you only print once in a while. Also HP has great drivers on linux
>>106563035yeah but its hp
>>106562856Avoid HP inkjets like the plague
Fuck HP in general, but my Laserjet M15w has worked like a champ for B&W printing. Basic no frills printer, which is probably why it works so well. Retails for $130-150, but I picked up mine from a thrift for $20.Color aside, one thing I do kind of miss in my old printer/scanner is the "copier" function. I do use it semi-infrequently, but it is handy when there.
>>106563000this. go Brother, OP.
>>106562856the AnalPrint5000
>>106562856Any used laser printer.Cheap (sometimes even free), and the toner lasts ages.
>>106562856Go to the nearest store that has one on sale for cheap, use until it runs dry, throw it away and repeat.
>>106563000I found an almost brand new MFC-L2710DW at Goodwill for $20. Fewer than 80 pages printed, I think. I love my Brothers
Cat Printer.
Depends on how much and what you printerBrother for black and white high volumeSomething like an epson ecotank for high volume colorIf you don't print much, just pick whatever bullshit you can find for cheap
>>106564438>epson ecotankbuy that printer and you'll be encountering pic related constantly
>>106562856Only buy inkjet printers if you're going to print regularly, if you stop using an inkjet for awhile the ink with dry in the print head and clog them up, and yeah some of them have cleaning cycles and you can soak them in isopropyl alcohol to try and clear it up, but it's a pain in the ass and doesn't always work and then you have to buy a whole new printer to replace it cause the print head section costs just as much to replace as a whole new printer does.Laser printers are the only way to go when you're dealing with a highly variable, inconsistent print schedule where you might go weeks/months without printing anything.
>>106562856Battlehorse daisywheelers from the 80's. No pozzed drivers, no spazzing sound and movements, prints right away.
>>106564946>ink with dryink will dry
>>106564946So just print regularly then, what's the problem?
>>106565019Ever go on vacation? Ever just forget to do something random once every few weeks?Great, now you need a new printer.
>>106565092>forgetYou know you can tell the computer to do things automatically, right?
>>106565111Tell me you're a chud without telling me you're a chudnormal people don't leave their computer on 24/7, nor do they have it set to regularly print a page on their printer. Most people just buy a laser jet and don't even think about absurd things like you're suggesting.
>>106565132Windows can wake the PC from sleep for a scheduled task. This is basic shit that takes 5 minutes to set up.Stop being a clueless normalfag and learn to use a computer.
>>106564920The only reason they clog is if you don't run enough through them, which is why I specified high volume
>>106565180Again, just because YOU have autism doesn't mean we all do, your suggestion is riddled in autism.
>>106565132Why are you concerned with what normal people do?If it's a good solution, you should do it.>>106564946How often do you need to print to stop the printer from clogging?
>>106562856Depends. If you need to do every now and then few prints here and there and don't need color. Get a monochrome laser printer. The toner will be expensive but it does last. And you can find some third party ones.If you do a lot of printing and need color, then look into getting a tank printer. With those they use bottles of ink rather than cartridges. The official ink bottles are already cheap. For example an official HP Smart Tank black ink bottle costs 22 euros here and that's good enough for 6000 pages. (versus an official laserjet toner cartridge costs 88 euros and is only good enough for 1300 pages). Third party ink bottle costs 11 euros and it good enough for 4500 pages. However remember that tank style printers are inkjet printers. And as such you should print something with them at least once a week or they will likely clog up.
>printer>current_year
>>106565217>How often do you need to print to stop the printer from clogging?Depends on the specific printer and the ink, but usually recommended to do once a week, but you can sometimes stretch that to 3-5 weeks, you're more likely to occasionally clog by waiting that long though.
Things I would like in a printer:>A3>Color for wall art prints>Intermittent print schedules, months where no printing occurs>A4 scanner is nice to have but not a necessityAny recommendations?
>>106565240I used to have this shitty inkjet printer at my parent's house when I still lived there, just picture whatever color printer is cheapest at Staples, and it got used maybe once per 3 months, and the heads didn't get clogged up (except once at the end after about 5-10 years). Is clogging really a big deal or is what you're saying best practice but not strictly necessary?
>>106565251Not possible, if you want high-quality color printing for wall art you need to use ink, but with ink there is no way in hell you're going to go MONTHS without printing anything without having it clog.I'd recommend finding a local print business you can use instead.
>>106565267I've had similar experiences, but i've also had it clog within just a week or two. It's highly dependent on ambient conditions as well, more humid climate and the ink wont dry out as quickly.
>>106565286Makes sense. I live in a somewhat humid climate (the UK) so perhaps that was what helped it stayed clear.>>106565279Local print is certainly an option. I'm weighing up using the automated test print thing though, because I wonder if printhouses will have a problem with printing copyright material. Maybe that's unfounded. Most of what I would want to print is public domain anyway, but I can see myself wanted to print copyrighted stuff too.
>>106565326>because I wonder if printhouses will have a problem with printing copyright materialIf you want 1 print for personal use (you're hanging wall art in your home), they won't give a fuckIf you want 100 prints to sell, then they'll care.
>>106565251If you want it to be a high quality color it needs to be ink. In my office we have Canon color Laser Printers that cost 3k and the color prints look like shit. You have 3 options. You can get a cartridge based inkjet A3 printer. They are by far the cheapest option. The ink cartridges aren't cheap but if you don't print that often, that might not become too much of an issue. Alternatively you can get a tank style printer. But that's gonna cost around 2-3 times what the cartridge based systems cost. But the ink is cheap. Also basically both these options will have A4 scanners by default. Last option get a photo printer. In the A3 category a photo printer isn't that much more expensive than a regular A3 printer. So you could get some pretty high quality wall art prints from them. However if you print some regular documents you would probably need to get an another printer. Maybe some cheap monochrome laser printer. As for clogging. You might want to print something at least once a week. Even if you aren't going to print anything just print something once a week (a test page for example). That should prevent clogging.
>>106565342OK cool. Yeah it's all personal use stuff, at most a second copy for a friend or family member. A place local to me will do a fine art print on A3 for £7 so it's a fairly strong contender. On eBay I can see A3 photo printers for around £150, with ink, so I guess it depends whether I think I'll print ~20 or more of these.Something else is that if I do go with the print services I'll still want an A4 mono laser, and they're around £60 on eBay, so the A3 printer actually wins back a bit of ground there again.
>>106565395OK, all noted. Thanks. I know laser A3 is out of the question, but its useful to hear that even if I did want to pay that much the quality is poor. I've been having a bit of a hard time finding comparison images of print quality. I thought there'd be somewhere online with closeups of prints on different computers, but I couldn't find anything like that.Whatever printer I get will be on CUPS on an always on machine, so I think an automated print won't be too much trouble.
>>106562856I recently got the Brother whatever-it-is printer.https://www.theverge.com/23642073/best-printer-2023-brother-laser-wi-fi-its-fine(HL-L2460DW if you want to know my actual model)It works with Linux using generic CuPS printer drivers, so there's no proprietary shit to install. It can print on both side of the paper. It's a laser printer so it's fast. It's monochrome. With a pack of printer paper too, it cost me about $200 on Amazon for the whole order.I've always hated printers. I actually like this one.
>>106566223>HL-L2460DW>$94 toner catridge for 3000 pagesalthough I guess if you go with non-OEM toner you can get that down to about $20-30.
>>106562856I have a canon ink printer that I got working with Linux. I needed it specifically for color so that's why I bought it.
>>106562856I bought this one because it is ridiculously small and light for a laser printer. But you need a fucking HP app and an HP account to print at 600 dpi.
>>106562856>Bought a Xerox printer back in 2008.>Filled up the cartridge several times.>Still works to this day.Why they cannot make printers like this anymore?

>>106562856For any printer, avoid HP like the plague.>printing photosBuy an inkjet with refillable ink tank such as Epson EcoTank or Canon MegaTank. Do keep in mind that these printers need to be used once in a while or ink nozzles can dry up and ruin the printer. Also, the cleaning sponge will eventually fill up and need servicing.>printing documents and/or graphicsBuy a Brother laser printer. Color if needed.
>>106566275I think Brother has started blocking non-OEM toner with their latest firmware. They used to be the one not-shitty printer company for that, but now they're shitty too.

>>106563191my current HP laserjet has a scanner I can scan stuff into images or make copies. of course its not a color laser but still. bought it during the height of the covid bullshit cause I needed a printer and my old one finally took a shit. trying to find a fucking printer during this time was not fun. luckily target had one left of this one that had the scanner and print functions I needed. >>106569448I can vounch for it. after you install the driver, it's plug n play
I have a Brother wired up on its own firewalled and gatewayless VLAN. Anything on my LAN VLAN can initiate connections to the printer's VLAN, but the printer cannot initiate a connection out of the VLAN or to the internet. No leaking serial #s or printer telemetry today!
>>106570938I have a Brother wired up to a usb port because that's the only thing it has, rate my security model
>>106562856If you're only printing black get an old HP LaserJet, I use a 1320 and it just werks.Inkjet mogs the shit out of laser for color/photos, pic related is a Canon ip100, I found one at Goodwill for 10 bucks, all I had to do was unclog the printhead with distilled water and it makes beautiful prints on photo paper with cheap ebay cartridges though I also had to waste half of one on deep cleaning cycles afterward and used up the rest pretty quickly printing game covers.
>>106569448NTA but I've never had to install anything for printers on linux. It's always just picked them up automatically, including a couple HP printers.
