Non-commerce websites consolidated into maybe a dozen sites that most people use. Years ago there were countless websites. Now speech is in the hands of a small handful of mega rich individuals trying to push certain narratives.

>>106569089>Years ago there were countless websitesThere still are, Search engines have become portals to only a specific part of the web and that is killing the web as a whole.
>>106569088Spam was a thing even before the internet. Usenet was full of spam right before it became obsolete.

>>106569171>my assumption is the lack of trafficGiven that 1990 was 35 years ago it's more likely the original owners/operators died or are dying and the family doesn't give a shit so they shut it down.
>>106568976Fun became illegal around 2010.
>>106568976In my opinion a few things:1. Commercialization. Everything now is commercial and a business to make someone money. In the young internet people would have personal pages for whatever they were interested in. There is hardly any content online where the goal isn't to milk you.2. Stagnation of new things. The internet was full of new things in 1998 and onwards. I remember habbo hotel (the original finnish one) and runescape. Free and big, pushing what were technological limits then.3. Phone accessibility. This is the worst one, 4chan took a big BIG hit when all the kids with their phones could start posting here. To me 2013 was the worst, I remember my home board of /o/ getting absolutely plastered with kids in their late teens looking more for friends with similar interests rather than wanting to talk about cars. It just got worse and worse and then everyone left.

1. In a capitalist world as things get popular and grow in size/resources they tend to attract the attention of rich.2. As rich start to take over this "huge cake", things quickly become centralized. Mostly shared in huge slices (e.g. pillars of social media)3. This structural change leads to more condensed subareas, which itself leads to high permeability between otherwise seperated cultural tribes.4. The interaction between these tribes, or in other words "diversity" often lead a negative backlash for both sides. Because the only good "diversity" is one rooted in a degree of unity and shared values. Addition to this, in such environment people gradually become more similar to one another and quite timid, avoiding unique thoughts that could be triggering for other. Finally they become bland creatures/bots (direct opposite of what commies would expect)
>>106568976Normalfags, govt and corpos, they turn to shit everything they touch.
>>106568976Old internet:>Man in bedroom does funny thing goes viral.>Feels authentic.New internet:>Man in bedroom hawks wares and tries to force virality via gaming the algorithms in endless copying.>Backed by agents and big companies.>>106569134>Yeah I was about to say, I'm surprised that barely anyone here is talking about how you just can't find shit with current search engines anymoreThe implications of this for general culture is insane because people feel like it is an absolute chore to keep up with things beyond a surface level. It is part of the reason Youtubers who explain basic shit have become so popular. Rather than read a few articles, go to a forum and talk about shit people have this perception that every hobby or thing is impenetrable and often fall back on comfort viewing.
>>106568976We grew up and got old

The Internet sucks because the people using it suck. You motherfuckers are irritable, dismissive shitheads who couldn't hold a conversation if your life depended on it. Every website is full of an equal mix of dumb, useless faggots who contribute nothing, and borderline illiterate retards who should just be banned already to free up some extra bandwidth. I keep being told the same thing, that the Internet is full of cool people who would make good friends. Instead it turns out they're all literal scumbags who couldn't give less of a fuck about you no matter how well you hit it off, no matter what common interests you share. That's why the fucking Internet sucks, you dense assholes. It's because the entire impetus to even USE this fucking thing — socialization free from the backwards conventions of everyday life — was nothing more than a pipe dream. Another ladder pulled up with no way to get it to ever come down.
>>106568976>What went wrong? You. The internet is not here to entertain you. The world is not here to entertain you.
>>106568976Social media and advertising algorithms ruined everything and should have been made illegal immediately.

>>106568976what went wrong was steve jobs didnt die on 9/11
>>106568976Brown people.
Mass many-to-many communications between people who can't see each other, don't remember each other, and are not in the same headspace or mood as each other, have no shared community or purpose, and in which people have massive incentives to get as much attention as possible, and in which an infinite supply of strangers join/leave the conversation at will, and in which the vast majority post on phones rather than keyboards. The communication efficiency of such places is effectively zero, but people are hooked on it because it's an endless stream of low-effort novelty. It is a spiritual poison and you were not hooked into this machine back when you used to use the internet for fun and creativity.>>106569046Exactly. When you use computers with some intentionality they are fucking magical. Computers and the Internet are awesome!
>>106568976They are taking away the person-to-person interactions, and replacing these with one company approved to many receivers interactions.Like you used to talk with people, now zoomers congregate around e-celebs and don't really interact with each other, they are competing for the celebritys attention. Also making internet into new gen TV. Normies live passive entertainment. We loved internet for interactivity and participation not for passive consumption.

>>106568976I remember when PHP forums were the place to be. Felt like you could actually build something. I had big plans thought I’d be a programmer making indie games. Spent years trying to learn C++ and fiddling with rpgmaker but never really finished anything. Just always got stuck on some little detail and lost motivation. Now I'm 30 slinging fries at burger king living in my mom's basement and my biggest accomplishment is beating Elden Ring. She nags me to apply for better jobs but what's the point? I'm just waiting to die at this point. And it’s all the normalfags fault. The Internet used to be a place for weirdos for people who didn’t fit in. Now it’s just instagram and tiktok full of brainrot and photos of women whoring themselves out. All those stacies flaunting their bodies acting like being a slut is a personality trait. I tried talking to women at work but all of them were disgusted by my fatness and ugly face. It's not just that the internet isn’t fun anymore and its become a big corporatized sanitized place, it's that it reminds you how little you’ve actually done with your life and how much better everyone else has it.
People say everyone is terminally online, but I have the opposite problem. 4chan is the only place I can come to to have fun yet half the boards are dead all day long. People aren't posting interesting things frequently enough.
too many browns
>>106569167why do you even reply back to it?
>>106570417Because to understand something you need to prime it for yourself and that requires higher-level thought, effort, high cognitive load even it won't take that long, also making correct guesses more often that not implies you've been doing this for a long time and you become good at priming and that you also by now have a wider knowledge base about many topics.

i was reading something the other day and it went like this. before we used to share a lot of the same experiences because television and almost every form of media was shown at the same time and unless it was recorded, everyone had to enjoy it at the same time, so media was very communal. that mentality crept into the internet for a while because people were so used to being on the same page so memes just spread like wildfire. well nowadays we are pretty much removed from that 100% aside from maybe sports, but that's so fucked up with legal gambling that sports have lost their luster too. and because everyone is on separate schedules with their own 'custom tailored' feeds or using streaming services for everything or whatever, that the slight feeling of community we used to get from the internet is now gone, and everyone feels super lonely and that lowkey depression manifests itself into resentment for other people that is often projected and we just shit on others for no reason.so basically unless we start abandoning the modern internet in favor of communal activities again, we will all become bitter and lonely regardless of whether we want to accept it or not.

>>106570192Yeah. Zoomer here but I started using the internet in 2011 to join LEGO forums. Youtube had a 5-star rating system when I joined.I noticed the decline myself around late 2015 to 2016. The whole Leafy/Keemstar era shit was the last hoorah for the internet as we knew it. The corpo bullshit was already creeping in well beforehand though.I think the last GOOD year was 2014. You had a perfect synthesis of well-functioning, good corpo websites, while forums and personal sites were still everywhere. No discord. Social media was for normies and they often didn't break through the floodgates.Even google plus was good for a little while. There was so much to do on the internet, it still had magic. It was an equilibrium between corpo and private, and it was beautiful. There will never be another era like the FNaF golden age, Gangnam Style and What Does The Fox Say. The internet died shortly after.Recently I've tried distancing myself from the surface web and trying to hang more around obscure websites. Completely got off discord. The old internet still exists, the dream is still alive, it's just buried by normies and AI slop.Just gotta be positive.
a better question is how we get back what they stole from us? posting purposefully shitty sites on neocities won't do

>>106581273Got any examples?
>>106568976If I were to blame it on anything in particular:>smartphonesBeing able to access the internet at any time and place is much more convenient, because you don't have to go out of your way to participate in it. In addition to flooding the web with normies, this convenience has come at the cost of encouraging lower-effort participation due to the lower barrier to entry of effort required, and due to just being something you would briefly check on in spare moments of your day.I suppose another factor here is that it's much easier to become burnt out/desensitized when you're never truly separated from the web and can access it whenever you want.>social mediaEverything has been consolidated into a small number of websites, controlled by an even smaller number of massive tech corps. There's rarely the same variety or sense of discovery because it's all just another facebook page, youtube channel or whatever, and what you find is largely controlled by a recommendation algorithm rather than going out of your way looking for it.Alternatives do exist like neocities (or just making your own site) but you're also gimping your exposure because the average person isn't going to be looking outside of those same big websites.>monetization of social mediaBeing able to make money from posting stuff online is nice in theory because it helps support people making cool stuff, but in practice it's just led to the web being flooded with content farms and AI sloppers churning out the lowest effort trash possible just to make a quick buck. Without this same degree of financial incentive there was a lot more "purity" in it, where people made things just for the sake of making them and showing them to other people. In conclusion, I would say 2007 was the beginning of the end with facebook and the iphone; it wasn't an instant death of course, but it's been in a steady decline ever since.Alternatively, maybe I'm just completely wrong and retarded.

Alan Greenspan, FED chair, literally went on TV every week to shill dot com stocks until one day he pulled the plug and raised rates.
