Hello, new poster here, so apologies of this is too off-topic for this board.

Post interesting and useful finds you may have from wiby.
https://wiby.me/

Wiby is a search engine that focuses on fetching "old-school" websites. I think it works by looking at the HTML itselJust start searching whatever, or click the "surprise me..." if you want to be taken to a random site.

there's also a .org version of it. Don't know what the difference is.

this probably goes without saying, but don't run any binaries you find on any site without making sure it's safe. consider using a virtual machine for added safety and even then be cautious.

I like to spam-middle-click it to get like 100 pages opened, and then shift-tab through them. Uninteresting and/or significantly broken/dead sites I just CTRL-W to see the next.

This isn't actually a search engine. It's a pre-curated list of sites that it just matches your query through. There's no web crawler or anything like that. It's just user-submitted URLs.

3/4 of the pages on there were not submitted by people. But yes, a sizable amount are thankfully submitted by actual anons who are the heart of this project.
>>
>>106575066
I don't care. It's not a search engine. It's a curated list of URLs, like I said. You can make a generic search now and come back in a year and it's going to be the same exact stuff.
>>
>>106575095

Glory. It's just a baby server on a vps. I was curious about how a manual approach to image/video uploads could work, opposed to an s3-like solution, so just threw it together for grins and wrote some selenium to pipe in some random threads from gif/b to seed it.

Mostly didn't know if I was about to release some totally insecure code. Don't expect the uploads to last... I may nuke and redo it at any time.

Lol yes. But seriously don't worry. It's a $6/month vps with only 20gb on it. It's super simple to get rid of anything uploaded. I can just delete the entries from postgres and/or erase the folders. Plus the domain was only $2 for the first year.

>>
A site dedicated to those struggling with porn addiction:
https://pornisdicey.neocities.org/articles/resources/
>>
>>106578920
It's only kept insofar as it exists as a file on the server. But I'm not saving anything to a backup or off site. This was an experiment to see how image and video validation works, and to see how bad loading times were without cdn.
>>
>>106579833
Basically I wanted to experiment with what something like my own catbox would require. I could turn off the recent uploads to make uplaods publically undiscoverable, so that you'd have to use a link to get to the media. And for actually private things I could require a password and use short lived auths to retrieve the media. But I have two littles and only had a couple hours during naptime to experiment.

You might be pretty interested in Gopher or Gemini spaces. They are html alternatives, have been around for decades so have their own histories, and have their own search engines. Fun to search old games/music on
>>
>>106581940
The problem is that you could argue that every search engine contains a curated list of links, by your own definition. You're a pseud.
>>
>>106584195
You could, but that wasn't the crux of what I said, which you're specifically leaving out because you just want to continue to argue because you can't accept the fact that you were wrong and the point you made was fallacious. But keep going.

Every day I become more sure that the internet was built by and for high functioning autists and it was hijacked by normies in the early to mid 00s.
Old school websites were all like going on and on talking about stuff these people were really obsessed about, along with weirdness and political rants. I see why normies would not be interested in computers outside the realm of games and porn before social stuff and YouTube came about.
>>
>>106586849
Ok
>>
>>106586849
The good news is that the old internet hasn't been removed. It's just alive as you want it to be. Few actual autists migrated from their own domain to centralized tech like fb. Use a real search engine or use human curated ones like this.
>>
>>106571446

>>
>>106587051
True. So long as people continue creating websites, continue on with the webring tradition, and submit websites to web directories and search engines like Wiby, the old web is eternal. It's up to the people to keep it that way.
>>
>>106571446
Thanks but I think I'll keep using BING, the internet search engine from Microsoft. When I need highly accurate search results that have been carefully curated by a team of microsoft copilots, bing has my back. Just look at the lightning quick results when searching for content from my favorite videogame Bless Unleashed. A new dungeon was released and I was eager to find information on it. Thanks to bing's helpful search results, I now have reliable slave labor from afganistan and thailand who will be doing my future searches for me! When the third one arrives, we will be able to form our own raid! Thank you CEO Satya Nadella.

Oh yes of course, your "crux" wasn't addressed. Or maybe its just not worth addressing blatant lies like "it doesn't have a crawler" or to suggest the index is stale when it updates weekly at minimum.
Wibys main disadvantage is that the index is small and thus not practical to depend on entirely. But to say wiby "is not a search engine".. well, thats just like, your opinion, man.
