>>106572618It's all about heat transfer. Water is much more efficient (4.2 times) at heat transfer than air. The major benefit is the silence because the way heat sinks are built. Watercooling does still get better performance, if you overclock, you won't see the difference in most use cases. You could also cool a system passively, aside from pumps, if you so desired.

Think of it like bottling your farts then releasing them outside rather than just sharting inside your room with a fan blowing out of a window. Another efficient way would be using airflow ducting but since there're an infinite amount of pc configurations and cases all with different shaped components in different areas, it's not a viable solution.
