Why are codecs still an issue on modern Linux?
>well the good ones are proprie-
NO. THERE'S GOOD LIBRE CODECS. DEBIAN 13 SHIPS THEM. WHAT THE FUCK IS STOPPING FEDORA AND OPENSUSE FROM SHIPPING THEM?
>>
>>106573239
Never had that issue. Also, that image makes no goddamn sense. It's a mishmash of standards, containers, and codecs.
>>
>>106573239
Licensing issues. Those codecs cannot be freely distributed in all regions. Fedora and OpenSUSE are over-regulating by not offering them by default.

In theory the license holders could sue Debian for distributing their codec without permission, in reality they haven't yet bothered to do so.
>>
I installed Gentoo and I don't have this problem.

It's such a relief to be using windows, when I realize that W11 out of the box comes with everything just werking, and you just grab MPC-HC and get guaranteed 100% best performance and visual quality you can out of your flicks, feels good. No tinkering, no nonsense, no searching for alternatives or what's optimal or how to keep it updated, or what if it goes out of sync with other packages, or what if the licenses run out, or what if it's sandboxed in a flatpak and can't interact with system apps, or what if the repo is safe or not, linux is just one constant pain in the butt, the most accurate way of describing linux in one word is just "Hemorrhoid"

>>106573369
How about Debian?
>>

Stale Hemorrhoid

Patents. If you can't understand why that's a problem, you're a child.

das rite

fix your shit, normies.
y'all acting like it's magic.
it's not.

you drag and drop your media file into some edit
>there's a video track
>there's an audio track
some editors might require you to split them, but in general, a "video file" is
>a video stream (enCODED by a codec)
>an audio stream (also enCODED by a, you guessed it, CODEC)
>both of them CONTAINED within a CONTAINER

so, yes, i can take shit from an mp4 and put them into mkv, without actually changing the stream data, that's no problem.
(the reverse is difficult: mp4 containers don't accept all codecs, etc, etc., but not all players accept the "universal" mkv container)
yeah, it gets complicated, but a container, a stream, codecs and what this shit is all needed for...
i don't know, can we assume this to be basic digital literacy?
fuckin retards
>>
>>106573580
MP4 has been obsolete since MKV got support for DV. MP4 doesn't even support most subtitles. The fuck were they thinking?
>>
>>106573580
>you drag and drop your media file into some edit
i kno u normies love recording urselves
i kno u want to kno
come on
get it together

RTFM occasionally, i get that nerds spoil shit
but u cant ostrich yourself outta this
>>
>>106573570

ffmpeg is libre

>MP4 doesn't even support most subtitles.

It's old, it's Apple, it was at the right place at the right time (but wasn't the best candidate).

MKV isn't all too great either (but also not too shabby either), but it's the best we got.

But TV devices from 2005-2015 *probably* won't support MKV, and only MP4, so there you have it, due to us humans getting stuck at 1080p, these devices are still in operation, and the rest follows suite.

This is why nerds are so... political about all this tech shit, when you normies are just like
>dude i just wanna watch some tiddies
yeah, yeah
>>
>>106573643
and collections of code in ffmpeg cannot be legally redistributed because of patents. What's your point?
>>
>>106573662
Compile it yourself if you need something that can't be redistributed (you probably don't)
>>
>>106573652
>MKV
Made the mistake of being primarily a video format with web-compatible version (webm), instead of defaulting to webm as baseline and putting all the extra shit in to .mkvx or something.

probably too soon, it's like mp4 and mkv are .doc and .odf formats of video files, and only due to sheer inertia is mp4 rather fulfilling the role of the "video file equivalent of pdf" due to the non-existance of a real "no-brainer pdf format" for media files.

don't get me started on 24000/1001 fps.
>>
>>106573662
So instead of redistributing it, why can't the operating system's installer have a script that connects to the internet during the OS install, compiles the codec stuff locally during the install?
>>
>>106573677
mp4 is a lot shittier for various reasons. Ever tried to recover an incomplete mp4 recording after a crash, power loss, or some other kind of failure? Besides that mkv is great because it doesn't really care what codec you are putting into it for the most part. HEVC with mp2 audio? No problem!
>>
>>106573691
I fucking love MKV, but as soon as you click on a .mkv link, it starts downloading, instead of playing.

I mean, if you're making a video format ("media container", if we're being pedantic), you're not (only/primarily) targeting nerds, you need to think about all this other collateral effect stuff as well.

and i don't think it's a political issue (i.e. browsers COULD play MKV, they just can't because license or shit), because webm exists, meaning it's a technical issue at the forefront.

and if it's a technical issue, then they made an erroneous assumption, the full spec is the baseline, instead of using the reduced spec (for web and maybe also embedded/TV devices) as the baseline, and the extended spec for the nerds on desktops.

gabish? :DD
>>
>>106573730
OK, I just read about the history of webm, you can't blame the MKV team, I guess, i.e. it's just tough tiddies all around, nobody is really to blame, it is what it is.

Google made a with reduced spec, compatible to MKV, so they set the web standard, I suppose it *IS* a political issue, browsers don't play MKV, when it is an open standard and the browser otherwise plays the video and audio streams if only it is in a different container.

Man, fuck this shit.

> WHAT THE FUCK IS STOPPING FEDORA AND OPENSUSE FROM SHIPPING THEM?

Well Fedora specifically is affiliated with IBM to some degree and they said they want to avoid potential (((lawsuits)))
>>
Here's an impossible one=

An 8 bit 22015hz rendered track worked on mint 21.2 (clementine), but not on 22.2 (strawberry, or cl),only vlc handles playback ofc, clue of a missing dependancy??
