I use it for webs, ms office, and I play casually wow retail on it. It’s 13 years old and zero problems gaming or with my day to day.

Just got a M1 Macbook Air for £300.
Probably more powerful than the gen 4 i7/ 860m equipped stupid gayman laptop I had a decade ago, now fanless, actually portable, and day long battery instead of half an hour.
I look at the state of other laptops and it's just shit. Everything else in this pricerange is all Chromebooks. I'm not Apple fan but there's literally no good alternative.

there is no equivalent to macs

macs have:
>soldered SSD/RAM/WLAN
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>when pajeetOS runs out of RAM it swapfile rapes the SSD to death within 3 years
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>when the SSD dies it bricks your entire currybook because the EFI is stored on the soldered SSD to save $0.05
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>components serial numbered and tied to the motherboard to prevent repair and replacement (including battery)
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>riveted keyboard that requires total destruction of the chassis to replace
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>flexgate cables that are so brittle they crack from opening your screen past 90 degrees more than 2 dozen times
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>screens so fucking shit they have over 90ms response times (essentially 10Hz)
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>screen made from pajeet trash glass that cracks from temperature change in seasons or tape over the iBotnet webcam
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>so fire and explosion prone the FAA have banned them from all flights
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>uses phone CPU that's so shit it gets destroyed by decade old i3s from 2017 and can only "compete" by cheating at benchmarks in extreme edge cases with hardware accelerators
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>curryniggers at apploo get so full of sniffing their own currynigger silicon shit they ship currybooks with no fans and they run so hot they melt the keyboard keys
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs

>keyboards with 63.5% failure rate
unheard of on PCs, and yet you curryniggers defend it with "jus werx fer me!"
just because you're in the 36.5% survivor group doesn't make your currynigger trash any good
this list goes on forever
there's no PC laptop as total fucking currynigger shit as crapple's streetshitter books
they are the biggest heaps of steaming currynigger shit in the history of computing second only to curryPhones

I should look into that. I recently picked up a late 2013 i7 Pro. Minor dents, but in great shape, no signs of corner drops.

Not sure what I would do with it since I was skeptical of putting it on the internet as it's only supported up to Mavericks.

ok. apparently I looked up things wrong before. It's Model A1398, so a Mid 2015, not as old as I thought. And apparently supported by High Sierra. But when I did the network restore the other day, It installed Mavericks.
>>
>>106579887
I just retired my 2013 mbp in favor of an m4. But it still works fine. It's amazing that in 12 years no real progress has been made. The m4 keyboard is worse.
The problem with the old laptop is the battery. I had to replace it once and the replacement is already failing. Also the charger cables keep fraying, I had to replace the charger twice and now it's falling apart again.

The only Mac I have is a MacBook Pro 2008. It's surprisingly usable with a modern Linux and it's a very nice device for being a billion years old.

Since I don't have any other Macs I have no idea how to put back MacOS on it tho...

how the fuck are you getting away with sonoma on 8gb mem? i've got the late 2013 15 inch that i've been meaning to OCLP but i've heard poor perf with anything less than 16gb. funny enough the glossy IPS screen still beats most modern matte shit today.

macbooks are great since apple silicon, but you just cannot defend old intel macs, especially not the nvidia era ones
>>
>>106584657
It works for what OP wants it for. So long as the OS is still snappy (it should be, those old i7's are pretty good even today for basic stuff) and does the things OP wants it to do, who cares if it's not M series?
>>
>>106584714
it will work fine as a chromebook-running-macos, sure, but let's not pretend it can really do much more
for all the good things they did with their new silicon, the end of the intel era really *was* shit cooling wise
not as shit as contrarians wished it was, but still shit
if OP is from a 3rd world shithole then yeah great, but in any other case they're better off buying a refurbished M1 macbook for like 400$ or however little they now trade for
>>
>>106584835
>it will work fine as a chromebook-running-macos
That itself isn't a bad thing. The worst things about Chromebooks are the shite build quality, and shite software. Old macbooks fix both of those issues, as Apple's software and hardware design (other than the switch to arm) hasn't changed since Jobs was still breathing.
>the end of the intel era really *was* shit cooling wise
Yeah, but OP predates that. I had a similar i7 from that time, and unless I told it to clock down to save power, that things always had full tubo boost available. I never saw the advertised clock speed, it was always boosted at 3.4Ghz. Intel used to actually be good.
>they're better off buying a refurbished M1 macbook for like 400$ or however little they now trade for
No argument from me, that's what I did.

Actually, for the 2015 models, the latest version of macOS with native support is Monterey, which still supports most apps in the app store and from other developers. Even Catalina is still usable in the current year if you're willing to switch your main browser to Firefox ESR.

anybody knows how to reinstall the Mac OS boot loader after installing Linux mint on a Mid 2012 MBP? Seqouia was running fine, but I wanted to re-enable Linux bootloader and ran upgrade-grub after using rEFInd to boot back into the OS, now, the Mac bootloader is gone and I can't boot into it. heeeeeellllllpppppp

>Wtf kind of needs would a M1 be needed for?
that 400$ refurbished M1 variant will outperform this on every single metric, including for gaming if that's what you care about
even via rosetta (assuming a pessimistic 35% performance penalty) it will still blow past it no question

are you sure your installer media is bootable? pretty sure it's a specific setup compared to generic installers, and after that you should see it at the boot drive selection screen
>I don't want to lose the installation and have to format etc. There's no way to recover the installation?
use repair startup disk at https://support.apple.com/en-us/102518
alternatively, you might have to back up your data in recovery os and then reinstall, but I can't see in what world that'd be necessary
>>
>>106579887
