What's the point of buying crapple again? I'd rather buy a thinkpad.
>>
>>106602833
>asahi
>>
>>106602844
Shit-tier and unsupported and didn't crapple sue the tranny who was developing it?
>>
>>106602848
if it really was a legal grey area I don't think fedora would have jumped aboard.
>>
>>106602891
Either way there's barely anyone developing it and crapple doesn't want to support linux. DOA laptop desu
>>
>>106602903
Give it time. Within a few years Asahi will be solid.
>>
>>106602920
Contd: Obviously, the plan is to have it ready for when M1 Macs stop receiving security updates. Until then it's pretty much pointless anyway, aside form a handful of small exceptions.
>>
>>106602833
buy an old intel macbook.
I wouldn't ever buy a new one regardless of how "good" people say they are. Not being able to replace the ssd when it dies is a dealbreaker for me.
>>
>>106602833
What's the point of running Linux on a Macbook? Don't buy Apple if you want to run third party firmware
>>
>>106602946
Why the fuck would I buy outdated crapple when I could buy a much better thinkpad that's got a new AMD cpu?
>>106602931
>>106602920
Sounds like crapple will never run linux
>>106602961
IDK man with the number of devs that salivate over it you'd think it at least supported linux
>>
Not to mention the price.
>>106602844
I think that's only for M1 chips but more importantly it's ARM which the Linux ecosystem doesn't support well. Not to mention the install process is weird, it's not a true Linux experience, and you have to buy an overpriced laptop when you could just get an old ass ThinkPad and have a better experience.
>>
>>106602946
The intel ones are dogshit, M series is order of magnitude better performance and battery life. I think they made the last few intel ones bad on purpose to make the M series look better.
>>
>>106602968
>Why the fuck would I buy outdated crapple when I could buy a much better thinkpad that's got a new AMD cpu?
because you can pick them up for very cheap and the hardware is fine for casual laptop work. I have one from 2015 still running perfectly fine and it can do everything I want.
>>106602978
I would pick one up if not for their anti repair stance desu. If I wanted a new laptop these days I wouldn't go for apple.
>>

m1 and m2 currently but they're working on the rest

what a shit thread
>>

I wish there was a windows laptop with similar build quality to mac for the price, plus nothing comes close to battery life of mac.
>>
what a retard. that's like saying
>whats the point of buying a ferrari if i cant put a ford engine in it?
this just goes to show that poorfags are poor for a reason and they need to stay poor forever
>>
>>106603064
you think that has nothing to do with the OS?
>>
>>106602833
Why arent these niggas using ECC memory? These laptops are glorified toys
>>
for the time being you need to concede that Apple laptops are the best
you still have your x86 desktops, it's fine
but nothing competes with the macbooks including the arm winbooks
it's just a provable fact
>muh soldered ram
it's better than your T480 dipshit, it's 200 times faster, lighter and lasts for 20 hours and can run LLM's
>>
>>106603064
yeah tis a shame. Would be nice if there were laws that made it illegal to make things anti repair.

intel macbooks from 2020 with 4 thunderbolt ports are solid machines they are only about 20% slower than M1 macbooks.
they are 10nm, have LPDDR4X RAM and support AVX512
on the other hand 2020 macbooks with 2 thunderbolt ports are abyssal garbage with the 14nm CPU from 2018 and DDR3 RAM.

The ability to install Linux is the only thing preventing a computer from becoming e-waste.
>>
>>106602833
>Buy macbook for the best in class battery life and hardware
>Use it as a thin client for my linux workstation
That's why.
>>
Well, if you have the opportunity to use MacOS, there's no need to install Linux on it as you would do on a thinkpad or comparable lesser non-Apple laptops.
>>
>>106602833
You can run the superior macOS.
>>
>>106602946
By the time the SSD dies the macbook will be so old and outdated compared to brand new macbooks that there's no point in trying to replace the ssd. Just get a new one.
>>
>>106603555
What if I don't want spyware? Or I want to keep receiving security updates after Tim Cook decides to pull the plug on my M1 Macbook?
>>
>>106603587
If you don't want any spyware at all and absolute complete control because you're paranoid ((they)) will find whatever it is you're trying to hide, stick with a crappy machine running linux. For the rest of us normal people doing normal stuff, macbooks are the best laptop machines.
Wanting to receive security updates after Tim Cock pulls de plug on the M1 macbook is stupid because by then the M1 macbook is going to be old as shit and not worth keeping because newer machines will be so much better than it.
Owner of an m1 macbook btw. Already wanting to replace it with an MBP M5 as soon as they come out (I need 120hz).
>>
>>106603570
no...
>>
>>106603587
you have intel or amd spyware running on your system right now, and you can't turn it off
>>
>>106603651
No? You buy it today and it dies in about 10 years (2036) which is the normal life expectancy for those SSD's and you STILL want to keep using the same +10yo laptop? It's not a car, anon. Macbooks aren't THAT expensive that you need to keep alive an old piece of shit (the new M4 Macbook Pro in 2036) for longer. Just get a new one. No point in keeping old pieces of shit alive.

>Wanting to receive security updates after Tim Cock pulls de plug on the M1 macbook is stupid because by then the M1 macbook is going to be old as shit and not worth keeping because newer machines will be so much better than it.
The only thing my laptop needs to do is write documents and fill spreadsheets. I couldn't care less about how many gigarams and teraslops the new models have.
>>
>>106603723
>write documents and fill spreadsheets

Sorry to hear that. Sounds extremely boring. I imagine that's your job but I'd want to kms if it were me. Is it for pleasure? Are you 80?
Have you thought about using an old typewriter for that purpose? They never stop working. Don't need batteries either. No software updates... all positives.

It'll never be as good as MacOS anyway, it's just a fun little project, like installing TempleOS.
>>

Let me guess, you need more?

I actually riced my MacOS terminal a little bit and it's now very pleasant to use. Semi transparent pool table green background with bold dark yellow font over it. Comfy.
Installed Neofetch on it too for the meme, lol.

And even if it isn't one it's pretty obvious that asahi / silverblue is pretty shit and doesn't support most things
>>
>>106605034
>asahi
It quite literally only supports M1 and M2 processors, and it doesn't even do it very well.
The whole team has dropped the ball and abandoned the distro already, the fucking spaniard troon literally disappeared from internet because torvalds told him that maybe the problem was him when he publicly said that he'd harass other maintainers to get their merge requests approved.
Then proceeded to have a massive crashout at one dude who was using his code because he put his name before in the contributor list, then proceeded to try and make amends with that troon until he got fed up with him and decided to tell him to go fuck himself in the ass for continuing to throw a fit without reading shit anyone else was writting.
>>

The "Single UNIX Specification" (named so because there are 5...and MacOS only meets the 2003 spec) was curiously not written up by Dennis Ritchie or Ken Thompson. Why should I give a fuck what some limp dick MBAs have to say about Unix, rather than Ritchie and Thompson?
>>
>>106605360
no one hires for "unix" knowledge these days. you're living in the past.

Ken Thompson has used Apple for most of his life. He claims to have switched to Raspbian at a conference a few years ago but that's such a ludicrous claim that I assume he must have switched back at some point.
picrel Kernighan, another Apple user.

I could not possibly give a flying fuck about Unix. I care about whether the operating system is good for me, and Linux is.
>>
>>106605582
Ken used Apple for most of his productive life and only switched to Linux after he went fully senile and invented Go.
