Bought a picrel like a year ago and had no real complaints. It was my first encounter with an e-ink so i was pretty blown away . It was even better experience once i installed ko-reader on it. I sold it after i stopped reading books and got into manga when i realized how inefficient it is compared to tablet.
>>
Kobo Libra 2
Waterproof, no hard online account requirements, lot of formats supported, and dead easy way to move files onto it. Too bad they don't make it anymore
>>
Still using my Tab Ultra C.
>>
>>106603302
they still make it? I just bought one. the thing runs Linux so you can install KOReader and Syncthing on it. it's totally and utterly based.
>>
>>106603358
They've discontinued it when the Libra Colour was released in April 2024.
>the thing runs Linux so you can install
Almost everything runs a Linux kernel in one way or the other these days. Amazon Kindle for instance also use it, but that alone doesn't simply allow you to install whatever you want.

Kobo Aura One.
I'd upgrade if the battery ever dies, preferably to another 8" or near 8"+, Would have to support koreader though, no workarounds that can be patched if I accidentally connect it to wi-fi so kindles aren't on the list.
I'd be tempted to go for a 10" as that's a good size for a tablet to read but would be worried about comfort in holding for long periods of time.

Oasis v1, it's the best e-reader ever made. They ruined it with the v2/v3 "upgrade", probably because they realised they'd made something good by mistake and wanted to get it off the market ASAP.
>>
>>106604827
It was released in September 2016. It should have been one of the first 7.8" 300ppi models. It also had a dual color front light. And a light sensor which is rarely seen these days.
>>
>>106603838
>I'd be tempted to go for a 10" as that's a good size for a tablet to read but would be worried about comfort in holding for long periods of time.
There's a few things to consider:
You don't have to actively hold it the entire time. Grab a dedicated tablet holding thing or just prop it up with a cushion.
E-ink isn't that heavy so even if you're on an hour long train journey or similar it shouldn't be too much of a strain.
Holding it in two hands is more feasible than the smaller devices.
Do you have trouble holding hardcover books?
>>
>>106603170
I use a Kobo Sage for reading manga via KOReader, it works pretty well.

2nd hand Kindle Voyage
It has the same dpi has newer models and the page turning sensors are pretty Based. They keep the display clean, have haptic feedback and never double-click. The plastic is cleaner than in other Kindles I've had, and the battery is easier to access (it has a clip-on cover on the back with screws underneath, no need to pry the entire kindle apart). Light sensor is a gimmick.
10/10 would recommend

how is the first oasis (8th gen) better? smaller screen, plastic build, the magnetic case thing. What differences do the later oasis models have that you think they're inferior to the 8th gen?
>>
>>106605837
The screen size isn't a big issue for reading. Plastic is lighter than aluminum, and the unibody design of the later Oasis models means they're guaranteed e-waste when the battery dies, it's impossible to replace. The magnetic case holds 90% of the battery, and you take it off when you're actually using the e-reader, to further reduce the weight for added comfort. Both batteries are easy to replace, too.

The 1st gen was 133 grams, the 2 and 3 are 190 grams, which is more than a 50% weight increase.
>>
Onyx Boox Note Air 3. Yeah, they're chink spies that violate the GPL, but it's actually great build quality, great value, and just runs Android rather than some cucked vendor lock in garbage. And the stock reading and notes apps are actually good.
>>
>>106605096
I have boneitis, so yeah.
I was considering how much lighter the aura one is compared to an 8" tablet. I've been using 10-11" tablets for manga for over a decade but they're not the best to grip for long periods of time.

I've been using ereaders since the 2nd generation of them hit (around the bookeen) stuff so I know they're light, I just know I'm more likely to drop a larger device when trying to change positions.
>>106604827
It's pretty good, like the other anon said, it's feature rich even if it is old, it replaced my kindle voyage, which I liked the press turn/page turn buttons.

Backlight's still good, battery's still good, can select RGB channels in koreader too, so can go full redlight if you need to. Very cosy still.

I wish the internal storage was still just a microSD card like it used to be. I upgraded my Glo HD to a 64GB card when I still used it, kinda bummed I couldn't do it on my Sage. it's part of the reason why I bought a Boox later on, now I have 128GB internal and a 512GB microSD in it
>>

I've never really used Calibre, tried it and it was extremely bloated so I uninstalled it pretty fast since I didn't have a use for it anyway
I just have a bash script to zip my manga folders into .cbz files automatically and recursively now and I just transfer the files via usb. worked fine on the Kobos and still does on the Boox (with the added benefit that I now also have a bigger screen and can read 2 pages in landscape, it's really comfy). still use the Sage but only for (totally not pirated) pure text epubs since a B&W display is better than my Boox's color display for that

Your local library might provide free access to digital lending services like OverDrive. My mom does that with her kindle, though I think it's less hassle to pirate books and load them with via usb.
>>
>>106610705
If you want to read pdf you should get a 10" or larger model. Every reader nominally supports pdf but the smaller ones are ill suited for displaying something with A4 sized layout.
Transferring via USB is something possible across the board.

Remarkable Paper Pro uses an active USI stylus and not Wacom EMR. It won't be compatible with any EMR stylus, including the older Remarkable Markers.
There are some USI styli that are compatible but obviously charging can be a problem.

I could never imagine buying a kindle new. The whole point of buying a kindle is that they're the most popular e-reader, so they're by far the easiest to find on significant discount second hand from old women who liked the idea of reading, read 2 pages, and then put it in a drawer for 5 years and forgot about it.

I paid 50 bucks for my kindle a few years back, and it was 300 bucks new. If you're buying the cheap ones there's less of a saving, but still, why spend 130 bucks on a paperwhite when you can get one of their higher end models for cheaper?
>>
I read in dark mode in landscape orientation on my phone. it's big enough, compared to a paperback you're basically getting the full width of a page so reading feels normal.
I do 100% of my reading in bed with lights off so while I think E-ink displays are neat they are useless to me.
>>
>>106611612
Pretty much every e-reader has a frontlight these days. Scrolling all the time would annoy the shit out of me.

>>106611603
The basic answer is that I treat my stuff generally much better than the person I'm getting it used from. My stuff lasts a long time. My previous Paperwhite 3 was from 2015! Only died cause it accidently dropped as I explained. Also $135 is nothing for me at this point in my life. I spend over $250 usually on my monthly trip to Sam's Club and I live alone.
>>
>>106611603
>get one of their higher end models for cheaper?
I don't see a value in the high end models for me. I just want to read books. Anything else I'll just use my iPad mini or computer.
>>
>>106612165
E-readers aren't like tablets or phones where the battery is going to be dead because the last retard fast charged it for 2 years straight while watching 4k movies on it, most are barely used and it's easy to check for screen damage in listings.

I'm not saying 130 bucks is a lot of money, I'm saying you could've got a much nicer tablet for cheaper. I've used paperwhites, the premium models are better.

>>106612180
The high end models are just the same thing except you get better design and physical buttons. I'm not talking about the A4 shit that's cumbersome for books, but I can see how the line is blurred a bit with shit like the scribe now.
>>
>>106612833
>I've used paperwhites, the premium models are better.
The only premium model currently available are the Scribe and Colorsoft. The Oasis has been discontinued.
>I'm not talking about the A4 shit that's cumbersome for books
There's nothing cumbersome about A4. Most books are that size once you open them.
>>
>>106612937
"Discontinued" is meaningless, they're all still freely available second hand.

>There's nothing cumbersome about A4.
The scribe is what, 400+ grams? That's 3x heavier than an e-reader should be.

>>
>>106613204
The colors come with drawbacks. There's a color filter array on top of the display that makes the image darker, requiring you to use the front light more often.
If you want something more powerful you may consider the Boox Go 7 BW.
>>
>>106613125

>>106614303
Note 2 or Note Air 2?
Bigme is the main competition for e-ink tablets but they're even chinkier than Boox.
Supernote and Tolino allow you to install apk but there's some hoops along the way.
Transferring books to Kobo is straightforward, it just hooks up as a USB drive. Not as flexible as Boox but I it should suffice for most. At worst you have to skip the login process by adding a line to an ini.
>>
>>106612165

Go find me anyone that's replaced a 2nd/3rd gen Oasis battery. The screen is as brittle as you can get, and you can't get the battery out without removing it.
>>
>>106614396
The batteries usually come with a toolkit to do the job, and the screen protector has plenty of room around it. There's some glue involved in models like that so you have to be careful putting it back together if you don't want to see bubbles other than that it's as easy as Legos.
