>you have to basically lie and overhype yourself to get anywhere in life these days,
Is that really true? Last interview I had, I had no confidence, and just said whatever. I was honest about my level of skill (being very low) and didn't try to posture. When shit-tested with the usual "name a time you fucking failed like the retard you are" I was honest and said I'd mangle plaintext with powershell (and find new and exciting edge cases every day) and dropped out of college so I have no real certs or verifiable education. I "knew" i wasn't going to get it, but got it, somehow.

That interview was a fucking shambles. I admitted weakness, said I was interested in things that aren't computers, and even made it clear that even if they called me back I wouldn't be quitting my job in the military over it even after probation so they have to work around my schedule or hire someone else. I still got it, somehow.

to quote an old post,
>i doubt any coding will be involved because the job ad i originally responded to required "Windows XP Experience" and in the interview I thought it was over as soon as I said something like "I've never actually touched a helicopter before", realized it, gave up on myself and went on to use phrases like "user skill issue" and included "go physically look at the device to see if it's beeping or has orange lights on it" after a troubleshooting shit-test question but then like a month later I got paperwork to sign to onboard

>that whole interview was weird actually, there was also an off-colour joke about hydraulic fluid, i told them straight-up that I'd be keeping my current job, my answer to the "what are you most proud of" was something about using powershell and still failing, it was a mess

turns out even if you're retarded, you're not competing against much better

This is definitely an interview with the hiring manager at the company, right? Because doing anything like that with a recruiter will be answered with, "We're looking for something else."
Sure, you talk with the hiring manager at some point, but they're most likely not going to pass your resume across the table in the first place.
I blame the practice of writing down what you want in a new employee. It's not like you can express things like, "Sounds like he can learn quickly", or, "Doesn't sound Indian."

If you're from NA your best bet is to start studying another language, try something European or asian, there is a growing demand for IT workers. Even if the market is slower than it was before there's still a great deal of demand for tech workers. But most places need people that can speak the local language, only the bigger international companies will take in people on English skills alone and then you're competing with all the saars.

I finally got a job, lads. got the call yesterday

first time working as a code monkey, imposter syndrom is slowly but surely kicking in.

the company I'll be working for is actually a popular chocolate factory. they have lots of cool stuff for the visitors, but until now all they had all their software done externally.
now they want to do a lot of stuff in house. but

>want to start from scratch, no legacy code
which is pretty cool, so I can start with new tech, implement sensible guidelines etc
but that's a lot of work too.
they want to hire two programmers for that. I'm one of them.

any advice? ressources on how to start the right way?

offshoring probably results in even WORSE work than ones who come here and you can at least manage them inperson and more closely. At least that's how it is in other industries that started this process 10 years ago, so it the cost-benefit analysis becomes more nuanced.

Lie but don't make it too much bullshit and actually get a surface level overview of what you're going to be lying about.

The worst lies I have to tell is about the previous companies where I worked at and how much I enjoyed it while also coming up with reasons why I left them. This is a literal humiliation ritual. Yes I wanted more money, or my boss was an ass or a combo of the two. When I describe these two scenarios in a polite way I always notice negative judgement from the other side. So I have to make up lies about how data engineering was always my dream and a natural growth path from a data scientist and all that blah blah. No I just hopped between data jobs either for more pay or because my manager was insufferable.

The EU market has been ass after 2022 as well just less so than US. If US will economically implode like 08 or worse it'll crash a bunch of weak EU economies that also have tons of debt (Italy, France, Greece, Spain).

>>106636024
One of the unironic reasons I went into data instead of SWE is because there is no leetcode. If you ever get asked python problems they'll be rather easy. I don't know if companies still do SQL tests though.

I realize the exact thing that made me unemployed all these time is not lying enough on my resume and too scared for interviews. I also thought i can only get a job in webdev whereas there's like bazillion jobs i can do for a year or two while building my skills on the side

Even non tech job doesn't sound bad as long as it affords my lifestyle and hobbies
>>
>>106625170

Officially unemployed for more than a year as a junior webdev (shit timing, I know) It's so over.

Should have started an internship with a company but they changed ideas at the last minute, after wasting 2 months of my life :)
>>
>>106642739
> junior
I'd urge you to change careers. I've been in this 15 years, it's too late for me.
>>
>>106642739
If you've never worked as a webdev, then you can't call yourself a junior webdev. You're a hobbyist webdev. An amateur webdev would also be accurate.
>>
>>106629051
>>106638722
What's funny is I actually spent much of last summer learning JP on Duolingo instead of prepping for the GRE, cloud certs, or LeetCode lol. JLPT N1 seems like literal hell though based on what I've seen, so it'll probably only remain a hobby thing. Chinese might be more within reach if I have the urge to study, but idk.

>>106641537
In my case I am literally one (mainlander parents). What's funny is that all 3 paid jobs I've ever landed were from Chinese American hiring managers (a mix of mainland/HK/TW). So maybe there's more ethnic nepotism for Chinese people than people give credit for.

That said, I have had some rough interview, course, or even leasing experiences with them. So it probably goes both ways.

>>106641973
What planet are y'all living on? Data science is harder to break into than SWE, and usually requires a Master's. MLE is similar but even harder (with the bar being a Ph.D). Data engineering is literally just SWE with more cloud and data stuff, and is less commonly an entry-level career.

Without clear cut knowledge of what you're implementing, best I can suggest is following sound frmeworks/practices like OWASP as close as you can. Stuff like that saves you time and gives a good general direction of where to go along with tools.

Also can not stress enough of getting a good workflow going. You are fucked if you raise expectations too high, bosses start believing you're programming god because you solved an easy problem in short amount of time, or that any change of the day can be done on dime turn because they saw some AI ad hype shit.

Or
>option 2: H1B
>will work for pennies all they care about is h1b sponsorship to get citizenship
>glued to you since you are their h1b sponsor
>often a contractor so no real benefits or PTO given
>work 2x harder since once they get booted they have no legal representation and will go back to their shithole and play the lottery again

I wonder...

this is kind of a confusing stat. I think maybe the implication is that the rate of

it's changing so that the inexperienced are becoming unemployed at a much higher rate

My dad worked for a company for 45 years, he was Vietnam vet and loved his work fixing lab equipment, the company put an Indian guy under him for like 2-3 months because my dad knew how to fix some old ass lab equipment and he trained him, then they fired him.
I tried to cheer him up but he died of natural causes a few months later jobless and depressed as fuck. I fucking hate these big companies that don't care about their loyal employees and absolutely fucking hate the H1B scam that is displacing hard working Americans that deserve a job.

Well good news is only the most idealistic tard will have something like that happen to them again. Boomers and early X are the ones who still think companies will look our for their best interest and should offer life long positions.

meanwhile you could get a degree in finance or accounting and make $70k+ right out of college with zero bullshit involved.

Being employed sucks. I have like 7 monitors and 4 computers at werk. I have to do all the IT stuff for the entire site, all the PLC programming and DCS stuff while managing two networks so I have a on office machine, a process machine with win 7, process laptop and a new process machine running windows 10. The process network alone is like 50 PLCs with hundreds of remote racks and switches. The worst part is the 40 computer illiterate office wagies and all their problems. It's hell on earth. Also we migrated domains and now the new crapware if filling the drives of basically every domain PC in the plant to the point that will become no longer useable. Also, I don't and won't have an admin account on this new domain so I can't even clear the windows temp folder or install a printer without having to reaching out to corporate IT and pray for a response.
