Why did Windows Vista get so much hate in 2007?
>>106639648You do not understand how slow it was on average pc of that time. Constant endless disk trashing.
>>106639648Poorfags.
>>106639648bloat
>>106639648Because it was (genuinely) flakey shit at launch. By time of SP2, mid 2009 or whatever, solid as 7. And better looking.
>>106639663This. Also, *thrashing>>106639648Intel convinced MS to have their shit iGPUs certified as "Vista compatible" but they were thoroughly underpowered for Aero so naturally people were not happy.
>>106639702unironically
>>106639648It was extremely buggy when it launched. After they released the service packs that OS was actually pretty comfy.
>>106639648Because it was- Slower than XP in every conceivable way- Thrashed the fuck out of HDDs at all times for forced indexing- Thrashed your GPU to render the stupid desktop, at all times, even in fullscreen games.- Removed kernel audio support which killed EAX and other decent DSPs so that Xbox wouldn't look so bad compared to PC- Used 8-10x the amount of RAM just to hold the OS, for all the above bloat- MS hid DX10 behind a vista paywall for greed (DX10/11/12 was ported back for a bunch of games anyway)
1GB of RAM was still uncommon for normalfags larping as poorfags with their grandma computersLow-end laptops were still $800-1000+Aero needed a gaming PC to run as well as Luna for some reasonThe kernel performed worse than XP in everything, including games and even copying filesEven if you had no problem with Vista, you'd come across an XP user gloating at youBy the time Microsoft fixed it, people were still downgrading to XP and vowing to never upgrade their grandma computers
New driver framework, some shiny new hardware didn't justwerk which caused normgroids to have meltdowns and demand refunds
>>106639775>- Removed kernel audio support which killed EAX and other decent DSPs so that Xbox wouldn't look so bad compared to PCBut added WASAPI, putting it into the XXI century at last.
>>106639796WASAPI sucks.KX > Stupid high latency 'pseudo kx'
>>106639648xp finally settled down form the driverpocalypse and they didn't want to go through it again so soonbear in mind, xp was still a dumpster fire, but it was a dumpster fire people were finally able to get set up after being forced to so it become stockholm syndrome
>>106639796Literally just kernel streaming 2.0
>>106639813This. Windows 98 was still around in 2005.
>>106639648Average pc had 2d acclerator cards with 16mb "vram", A P2/Celeron, a 15-20gb hdd and 128-256mb of ram at most with the same crt you've kept since 1989 capable of 800x600 at bestComputers cost 3-5k so generally most people ran that shit into the groundVista demanded 512mb minimum but they originally were gonna demand 1gbalso weird bugs like file transfers taking so long it'd unironically say "2 centuries" and shit
>>106639835What is this retarded bs, I bought a new laptop in 2008 with vista for about 1k, it had 2gb ram and 160gb HDDThe specs you've listed are literally turn of the millennium specs, definitely not average and back then people replaced computers every 2-3 yearsI still downgraded to XP though cause vista was still slow on 2gb ram, and unstable as hell (when it came out, idk if it got better)
- UAC being so poorly implemented. It sounded good on paper but so many programs and games at the time expected you to have admin rights (even built in Windows software, too) so you were nagged to death by this stupid prompt.- File copy times of text documents and other small files were absurdly slow during the pre-SP1 days- Readyboost being a stupid, halfwit solution for PCs that couldn't use more than 1GB of RAM. It required a USB 2.0 flash drive with a certain write speed or faster to be used solely for caching. I remember never seeing any tangible improvements using it.- SuperFetch was another big controversy I haven't seen anybody mention here in a while. I still remember big Vista proponents on a lot of forums back in the day telling users to put up with the slowness and STFU; it'll get faster the longer you use your computer.
>most computers came with a 5400RPM drive, lots of 4200RPM out there>512MB with shared graphics was the norm>usually on a P4It was pretty bad
>>1066402532008 was a big year for laptops. Asus Eee PC was big for a reason
>>106639648because retards tried to install it on their pentium 4 with 1gb of ram.
>>106639689/thread
>>106639689>>106640274Even richfags had to cope with XP users getting more fps in games
>>106639648Poor pepoI played Halo on my first laptop ever (came with vista installed ootb) good memories
>>106640272When the Vista beta was released, I built a Q6600 with 8800 Ultra and 4GB of ram and showed my friend how I could play UT3 and WoW at the same time on my dual monitor setup without shitty framerates.
>>106640254Yeah, Vista UAC was some monotonous shit. Even by MS standards, that was 'wtf' tier implementation.
>>106639648Microsoft let OEMs sell machines as "Vista capable" even though they knew it'd run like shit.https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2008/03/the-vista-capable-debacle-intel-pushes-microsoft-bends/
>Look! We have Aero and "Three-Dees" now. Because we have that now we took the liberty of tearing out hardware accelerated GDI support because that's bloat.>Oops! Did you just launch an old app on our OS? Looks like we'll have to disable Aero for you. Don't worry, we have this shitty 2D skin for our unaccelerated UI that we'll use as a placeholder until you close or upgrade your program, you luddite.
>>106640457never had that issue. PEBKAC
the first gombuter that i builded with my own money had an Athlon 64x2 6000+ and a 7950gt. vista was fine.
>>106639711>Because it was (genuinely) flakey shit at launch. By time of SP2, mid 2009 or whatever, solid as 7. And better looking. This is absolutely correct.
Vista worked great on the new computer I bought that had it installed. Wondered why everyone was complaining. Then I installed it on an older PC and it was absolute dog shit. It worked great on hardware that was modern and didn't cut corners. Older stuff, especially that which used various tricks to squeeze out higher performance from cheaper parts, would blow up regularly.
>>106640508>>106639711never flaky on my machine. skill issue.
>>106639648Coal on every front.
>>106639648The release of Vista was the day computing died. Ever since then computing has been an increasingly rotten corpse.
>>106639663Even if you installed Vista on a 1 trillion ghz machine, it would still be slower than XP.
>>106639648new driver model caused most upgrades to have major driver problems. If you built with new hardware there wasn't a problem

>>106641778You failed to demonstrate what anyone got in exchange
WDDM
>>106639648It was buggy and unfinished, Win7 was polished version of Vista. Nothing to do with requirements at all.
>>106639648Because it was dogshit compared to XP and 7.
>>106639648I think it was a Win 7 beta and a bait to force a hardware update
>>106639775>forced indexingi would remember if indexing was forced>thrashes gpuaero theme is optional>removed audio functionalityfair, though at that point computers could do that in software just fine. hardware audio effects were obsolete. it's not really fair to blame microsoft fully for any lack of software-based alternatives>used 8-10x ramcompared to what, windows 95? sure it used more than xp, but from my tests when it came out, it was using around 350M of ram. more than xp's ~100M (up to date xp), but that's not nearly 8x>dx10 paywallthe only game i know of that put itself behind a dx10 wall for the obvious purpose of selling vista was the halo 2 pc port. people still found a way to make it run on xp, since it's obviously a game from the xbox days, and the xbox is a dx8.1-era systemall that said, i bought new computer parts in 2006, but due to a lack of money had to skimp out in some areas, a major one being 512M of ram, this was quite minimal for a gaming machine in 2006. i tried vista on that machine when it came out (including a beta!), and it ran perfectly fine. but i didn't keep it, because i really did need that extra ~200M of ram. if you weren't a teenager and could afford 2G of ram, there's no reason not to have used vista
>>106639648it was bloated and crashed all the fucking time. You retard. It could barely run a lot of the time on the PC's of that time. You fucking faggot zoomers.
>>106639648It's the only copy I've ever purchased, first and last.
>>106640253It was average as in the average pc owneryou could buy better but most people were rocking beige behemoths from 95 still since until vista most just had to upgrade their ram to use a newer version of windows
>>106640285that's because of the new graphics architecture. they moved some shit to user mode
>>106639648You pretty much had to experience it as it was happening. It was worse than the current poojeet artificially forced "upgrade" from Win10 to Win11. Massive artificially-induced incompatibilities, massively fucked & broken code, artificially forced obsolescence of perfectly good and expensive hardware, a new user interface that retardedly deleted without help critically useful features from previous windows, suddenly no drivers for perfectly good hardware ... just generally fucked your bank account and all your free time for the first couple of years. My company literally had to throw out an entire truck's worth of printers, tens of thousands of dollars in losses we had to eat and pass along to customers FOR NO FUCKING REASON THAN "because."Yeah, a bunch of that shit got fixed eventually ... or all sorts of hacks were developed around all that ... but millions of man hours of lost workflow FOR NO FUCKING REASON THAN "because." It was a forced upgrade that was not ready for the real world, basically turned every windows user into an alpha tester, and microsoft was a complete cunt about providing and support or sympathy beyond FOR NO FUCKING REASON THAN "because." All while they pissed hot sulfurous urine in your face and kept telling you that it was not only not raining, but it was a fucking sunny day and you should drink the free lemonade. It was fucking miserable. You had to work 40 or more fucking hours a week and somehow trina yourself on broken shitware in your spare time for two fucking years before it started to get better.> tl;dr fuck microsoft for a lifetime of PTSD>and now they're doing it AGAIN because an entire generation of zoomers don't have any memory of how fucked that was and just swipe and tap on shit while pretending to be programmers and h4XX0rz>tl;dr again - fuck zoomers and fuck their phones, you fucking meatbot slaves
>>106639711> and better looking100%. I wish we could have kept the vista theme on 7.
>>106641778> *on shitty hardwareEven installed on a machine with an exabyte of ram and a trillion ghz cpu it would still be less responsive than XP.
>>106639648Same as why people hate win11 now
