im sure some of you know about the old V115 that's been out for years, they made a new one and it just got released a week ago>uses a BL-10C instead of a BL-5C (1800 mAh vs. 1000)>bluetooth support>external antenna connection>now has longwave and weather band support>a flashlight for whatever reasoni picked one up today for $30 after discounts, should be here in a few days. just thought i'd let you know

>using radios!>in the year 2025!Go to sleep, grandpas! My smartphone actually has a built-in FM radio, but I would rather just use one of my MP3 Players to listen to music anyway! Listening to any radio stations is unbearable because of the excessive amount of ads!

>>106650025>newI've had it for like 2 months. It's pretty shit for shortwave. I only use the mp3 player while fishing. For the price though it's damn good.
What do you listen to on shortwave, boomers chatting about their health issues?
>>106652084Listening to foreign news on the radio from a landlocked state is pretty neat

I miss when hd radio was a thing. So comfy
This is pretty cool device, thanks OP. Bookmarking this. I assume this can be used for listening to number stations too...
>>106650025xhdata brand is cheap and works geat

this works great with a external antenna
>>106652855>number stationsspooks still use those?
>>106652986North Korea still broadcasts one but the broadcasts are widely believed to be actually meaningless and done for psyops purposes. Also, Russia still broadcasts letter stations but that's technically something else.
>>106651196I still have one of those in the garage. It is not a good radio. The circuitry is old and makes a loud THUNK when I turn it on, but it's a pretty comfy vibe to listen to the classical station while I'm doing man cave stuff.
>>106652919>>106650025Is buying one of these a good way for a person with absolutely zero knowledge of shortwave radio to start listening to some stations? How receptive are these things? Can i just scan around and listen to stuff?

>>106650025Since all you radio enthusiasts are here, any recs for a handcrank FM radio?I don't need good sound quality or anything, just something that'll work in an emergency without having to rely on any batteries.
>>106650025What range? Up to 30mhz? Airband and ham vhf?
>>106650025Dude you can get shortwave receivers like that for $10. When I was a teenager I used to listen to HAM CW transmissions on one.
>>106654097How hard to start broadcasting radio, without proper authorization?Like some where 3rd world and broadcast propaganda? who's even listening maybe just cars?
>>106653012>are widely believed to be actually meaningless and done for psyops purposes.Yeah they were widely believed to be incapable of building a nuclear device much less an icbm yet here we are.>>106652986Before Russia went into Ukraine there were a bunch of transmissions so yeah they still use them.
>>106654126I have a Degen CY-1 but I'm not sure I can recommend it. It has the absolute worst battery cover on any device I've ever had and the battery doesn't last much since it's a BL-5C.It doesn't have a plug for an external antenna and since the internal one is so small reception is quite bad.If I were you I'd look for Kaito or Eton radios. The seem good (I haven't tried either).
>>106653285really? mine is super clear and doesn't make any sound when I turn it on.
>>106654938>DegenHoly kek, that can't be a real brand.
>>106654546pirate broadcasting is easythe ease of getting away with it, tho, entirely depends on which country you're inthe US government doesnt seem to care very much about the SW frequencies, but if you're a sloppy pirate and pollute frequencies people actually care about, you're gonna get v&ive never seen a SW receiver in a car

I prefer my radios to run on some sort of replaceable battery, like an aa.
>>106652468Mighty KBC does, so does WRMI legends

>>106657112>i bought a radio but don't actually like radios>why is it boring
>>106656993>europeNot my problem.
>>106656726The battery is replaceable.
>>106655598For me its the tecsun pl 368. Perfect form factor. Feels nice to use. Have a wire antenna for shortwave. I put it on the local vhf jazz station or graveyard local talk radio on mw at night. Nearly perfect radio. Currently building an SDR setup for hd radio though.
>>106655598I also have this one. It's literally the best price-to-performance shortwave radio on the market. The sound quality is incredible and the number of settings that you can tinker with is obscene given the price of this radio. Also you can listen to HAM radio on it if you know how to set it up. It's been almost 2 years since I've owned this radio and I still grin like a retard every time I use it. This should be number 1 on every prepper's list when deciding which type of radio to buy first. You can always buy some shitty Baofengs later so you can talk to your boys, but first you need a shortwave radio to get info about wtf is happening in the world if the grid collapses. PS: don't bother with external antennas. Just get an audio cable with a jack on one end, then strip the other end and crimp some alligator clips. You can then use any metal fence as an antenna and it will work better than most external or wire antennas.
>>106653330Anyone?
>>106658688They are somewhat retard-proof but not exactly simple. See my post here: >>106658593Basically you have to read the manual and understand the settings if you want to get the most out of it. It's not something that you pick up, press a few buttons and it just works. I mean you can do that, but you're leaving a lot on the table in terms of sound quality and the amount of things you can receive with it. Now when it comes to listening to shortwave stations or HAM radio, the antenna will make a difference. Antenna in this case means the nearest metal wire-fence that you can find. If you are living in a house, you could probably set up a fixed wire antenna on your rooftop or in your yard. If you are living in the city it's gonna be tricky, but not impossible. I've seen people setting up wire antennas in their apartments. It looked like shit but it worked. If you can't be bothered with that, the radio will still receive a good amount of stations. You won't be able to properly listen to HAM transmissions with the integrated antenna though. The best thing that you can do if you buy one is to ask an AI to explain all the terms that you don't understand. Don't be afraid to ask stupid questions. You can start with getting a basic understanding of the radio spectrum. For example: 1) High Frequency is 3 to 30mhz. In this interval is where you find preppers with HAM radios, shortwave radios, CB (Citizen's Broadcast) radios like the ones used in cars or trucks, Emergency comms, etc. There's a lot of useful shit in this 3 to 30mhz interval2) Very High Frequency (VHF) which is between 30 to 300mhz. Here you find handhelds that operate between 144-148mhz and are used to talk over shorter distance (under 20km) 3. Ultra High Frequency (UHF) which is 300mhz to 3Ghz. Here you'll find handhelds that operate between 420-450mhz. This range is more suitable for urban environments where there are lots of obstacles.
>>106659108cont'dThese shortwave radios usually don't do VHF or UHF, or if they do, they just receive commercial FM radio. They are extremely good for HF though. The point is that if you buy a shortwave radio and then buy a cheap Baofeng UV-5R which does VHF and UHF, you literally covered 99% of the useful frequencies. If you live in a country where CB radio is popular you can also buy a handheld CB radio and with just 3 radios you covered the entire (useful) radio spectrum. The only caveat is that with the shortwave radio you will only be able to listen, not transmit. If you want to also transmit, that's a significant investment. You'll need a proper HAM radio like the Icom IC-7300 or the Yaesu FT991A, but these are $1000+ radios that also require proper antennas. The Yaesu is a shack-in-a-box radio, meaning that it can receive and transmit on HF, VHF and UHF. It's literally a radio that does it all, but it's not portable cause it requires a lot of power and a big antenna. TL/DR: 1. shortwave radio + VHF/UHF radio + CB radio allow you to receive on all popular frequencies, but you won't be able to transmit on HF. This is achievable with sub $200 investment. 2. if you want to transmit on HF you'll need a proper radio that is expensive, eats a lot of power and requires a huge antenna. This is a $1200+ investment
