I have a MacBook Pro m4 and I also have a desktop downstairs with an AMD APU. If you want to just game, the APU is the better deal, as upgrading ram or anything else on the MacBook is very expensive.
If you're dealing with cnn/dnn/ViT/LLM's for work, the MacBook is better.

M4 Air is surprisingly good at gaming, I've been using playcover to sideload iPad games, mostly mihoyo stuff. And using the official wuthering waves client from the app store.

I'd guess the regular m4 is maybe something like gtx 1060 or 1650 but paired with a *much* faster processor than was available when those cards were released. And all passively cooled. Its a pretty neat little package.

Yes but not due to the M4s ability to play video games lmao. It's the killing blow to x86 laptops in the long run but if video games are all you care about then you should be getting a desktop or at the very least something with a dedicated GPU.
>>
>>106659853
Also it has 1/10 the power draw of a system like this, feels quite weird to use. Its not the fastest gaming machine but the fact you *can* do it while on battery and passively cooled is quite novel.
>>
>>106659853
Even for occasional gaming the Air makes little sense with its ancient backlit 60 Hz IPS when Macbook Pros have had mini-LED 120hz with VRR and HDR since the M1.
>>
>>106660292
m4 is actually good at games but gaming is basically an afterthought for Apple. They don't seem to care that their budget laptop has dGPU performance. But once you go apple silicon anything else basically feels slower.
>>
>>106660350
60hz is fine and has always been fine. Its the baseline.

The machine is quite capable for what it is. People are surprised at it being able to play games decently at all. There's no reason to suddenly start moving goalposts to 120hz oled. That's not what this discussion is about.

>>106660382

>>
>>106660451
You shouldn't be surprised that a 2024 APU can play lightweight games, honestly. My point being that Airs haven't been impressive for video games in forever due to their antiquated display.
>>

On paper it probably good enough for most shit.
The problem is actual native support.
Most games are still windows only.
Valve's Proton only works on x86 Linux.
And Wine with the gaming support stuff that Apple providies is too buggy.

you need to have a machine that games developers would buy, and what the general public are buying. games developers (and many other software developers) aren't interested in investing millions of dollars into software development, when a fraction of the 8% market apple that apple command, will ever use it.

>>106661397

>ViT
ViTs are absolutely not better on Macs than the alternative hardware, any image or video diffusion is mostly compute bound and Macs SUCK without any matrix multiplication hardware, even with M4. Only when you are running into memory capacity or bandwidth issues is doing any sort of AI okay on a Mac which is most LLMs applications. SDXL takes over 5 seconds per iteration on a Mac mini M4 running SDXL 1.0, any card at or above an RTX 3050 can manage 1 iteration a second at least. We'll see if M5 changes that but my guess is no, it's still going to have its lunch eaten by Strix Halo for anything from 0 - 96 GB outside of LLMs. Macs really only have an advantage from 16 - 256 GB RAM with unified memory before building a dedicated Intel Granite Rapids server with AMX acceleration and DDR5 fully populated surpasses it in LLM applications at the 10k mark.

I don't get this comparison. The m3 ultra is about $6000, the 4070 ti super is about $800, and the 9950x3d is $700. Shouldn't the $6000 machine be a lot better?
>>
>>106663315
>this my class looked like

>>106660224
Actually, Linux is just as bad, if not worse than macOS in that regard. ABI compatibility in userspace gets fucked up all the time. The kernel puts so much energy into not breaking userspace, then userspace just says "fuck that" and breaks itself every few months. Open Source is required on Linux, binaries literally don't work... for long.

At least you can run software in a namespace with an entire copy of an operating system, but that makes WinSxS look efficient in comparison.

It's a bit of an apples overlapping with orange comparison as those numbers are from blender - open data, strictly in terms of rendering.
So, the m3 ultra (two m3 max's stuck together) is 6k and if you double the price you get 512gb of wams (96gb base). Some time ago I vaguely read ppl were using macs to render out huge complicated scenes, albeit slower with the main benefit of stability. I say vaguely because there was hardly any comments or decent info, or examples of professionals using this hardware in this capacity.
The comparison in the images isn't something i understand either as a singular benchmark isn't representative of much and a bigger flex is the sc perf of apple silicon, and again, that's a dumb metric unless it's relevant in real world usage such as a specific workflow.
>>
>>106664570
>stability
???????
i think you can outright reject what these people said
an argument could be said that because the execution model of a cpu is wildly different from a gpu, it makes it easier to deal with subdividing workloads
but "muh stability" is something a nocodeshitter fanboi would say
stability issues emerges from bad code.
or a gpu wouldnt be sellable
>>
>>106664570
>The m3 ultra is about $6000
the M3 Ultra isn't sold for 6000$ though
the 80 core config can be found as part of the mac studio, an entire machine, in its upper end config at 5500$
would your typical 4070 Super Ti or 9950X3D system be cheaper? sure
is it a beast of a CPU and GPU in an insanely small physical and thermal package? also yes (which is why I was replying to a specific retard, not saying it's the best value per $ cause it isn't, obviously)

>>106664570
worth noting that the 512GB version is 9.5k$, not 12k$
pretty unbeatable for anyone that needs a lot of GPU memory
