I'm on a journey to install Debian 1.1 and upgrade my way up to the latest, using a VirtualBox VM. Right now I'm on Buster and stuck on one peculiarity (well, two).

Attempts to boot normally just make Gnome freeze, or in rarer cases, a kernel panic or the VM window itself crashes.

But if I set nomodeset? Everything is hunky dory.

I have 3D acceleration on and video memory set to max. Though I don't have guest additions installed, and I don't know if it would actually help.

I don't know if anything can be done about this or if I should just move on.

That's a SATA M.2 SSD, the new board only supports PCIe (NVMe). You can't use that SSD as it is, in order for it to work the new board would need to route certain lines from the M.2 slot to the SATA controller in the chipset, and it does not. You'll either need a new (NVMe) drive or find an M.2 to regular SATA adapter.

>>
>>106663146
Krfb comes pre-installed in most distros which ship KDE Plasma. Just set up the unattended access password.
You can use something like AVNC on Android to connect to it (I'm sure there are better clients, but this is the one I use because it was alphabetically the first thing on the list).

That said, if you just need to do mouse input and you don't need to view the desktop (screen) remotely, then KDE Connect should be fine. It's basically the standard inter-device connectivity utility on Linux/Android and it also has Windows and iOS versions.

As it does on Windows by default, just set it to TRIM once every week instead of every day.

i don't do a whole lot in that regard, but primarily i have automatic hourly btrfs snapshots, and i use bubblewrap to sandbox certain things like games and my web browser.
like i could run "rm -rf ~" right now and lose only 25 minutes worth of changes to my home folder
>>
>>106664231
fstrim is a manual trim command, but I dunno if it does a full drive trim or just targeted blocks
I think the /mount option discard=async performs trim if the current write operation requires those blocks
usually discard=async is set to default when an SSD is detected, but you can check with
mount[/code/

>>
>>106664339
that's more of a network issue, which gets tricky fast. what exactly are you wanting to do?
>>
>>106664339
Bubblewrap with sandboxing of user directories so that it only gets access to what it needs mostly addresses it but there are still some gotchas like if you need access to DBus then this is a giant gaping hole that can be used to escape the sandbox if you don't filter it properly (Flatpak's do).
>>
>>106664339
>>106664432
-- or, if it's a matter of what malware can see in the first place, bubblewrap or another sandbox will help there. like games i run in it can not see my home folder, they see a folder designated to that game which the game can write it's save files and the like to. so like if a crack i use has something look for bitcoin wallets or ssh keys or something, it won't find anything, since the game's process cannot see my home folder at all, it simply doesn't exist in the virtual filesystem presented to it.
>>
>>106664192
Keeping packages fairly upto date is going to help mitigate any user to root escalations. That's at least one vector you can cover off.

Other is having backups and being able to confidently blow your system away if you do feel something is off or you run something dodgy.

I have a few shell scripts and some ansible that i keep upto date, allows me to setup all my packages, dot files etc. quickly. Thankfully not had to use them in anger yet, so far just for testing in a vm with a new desktop environment.
>>
>>106664331

I think a couple of distros like Fedora auto enable a trim every week (Monday i believe).
>>
>>106664464
If that's Fedora with BTRFS then that timer (which most distros have) doesn't actually do anything for the default BTRFS filesystem which handles TRIM automatically in the background.

Is there anyway to decrease the windows partition size further to make more space for linux?
I've tried following the guide to shrink the windows partition (disable hibernation, defragment, etc.) but I only got to decrease around 20GB. I want the windows partition to be down to 150 GB (its still 500 GB).
>>
>>106664587
use gparted from a linux livecd. when shrinking the volume you're running windows from, it is unable to move certain "system" data, which over time can become spread out across the volume. when shrinking from another os however, this isn't an issue, as none of that data is currently in use. you can probably do it from a windows-based livecd as well such as HBCD, but since this is a linux thread, i am naturally more familiar with linux tools.

This shit pisses me the fuick off. Up until a few months ago, if I set the notification volume lower, then the loud ass beeps when I adjust volume would be correspondingly quieter. Then apparently some faggot decided that doesn't count as a notification sound so suddenly they're at max volume again, and instead there's a different option elsewhere to mute it. But I don't want it muted, just fucking quieter when I have my volume cranked way the fuck up for quiet ass VSTs. Great job assholes for breaking a perfectly functional and utterly normal setup for no discernible reason. I fucking hate linux and KDE so much, but everything else is at best just as bad.

Mint is easy to configure encryption on. Might want to enable autologon though so she doesnt have to input password twice (while keeping a password on the lockscreen).

The UI may be, the UX however:
If you like a gazillion of checkboxes and sliders that have no explanation to them whatsoever, yes.
And if you enjoy a way of installing desktop themes that rarely works due to pling rate limits.
And if you like sub menus within sub menus leading to a maze like experience.

KDE is a prime example of "Wouldn't it be cool if we..." leading to an absurd experience that you need an extra course on.

Just use the search, everything you want can be found there. You mentioned notification sounds, a simple search would bring that straight up without having to look for it.

Almost everything can be found this way, even the obscure settings that nobody rarely changes.
>>
>>106665449
Plasma Integration used to do a lot of stuff that Firefox didn't do but nowadays they've implemented most of them, for example, KDE added MPRIS support to the browser via the add-on but now Firefox has this as a native feature.
>>
>>106665469
A proper UI doesn't need searching to find features.

>>106665671
You can find them without searching, it's just quicker to use the search because it takes you directly to thing you're looking at. I'm not sure how you expect them to design it any better than it is, everything is already neatly categorised and the list would be too long if they didn't do that.

A UI which doesn't have search likely only has a couple of options. As soon as there's a double digit number of menu entries with more than a single option within it, you absolutely need search. Any good UI and functional software will have a search bar.

>why is everyone on protondb running proton version 9.0-4?
Because it has been the default for a long time now. Proton 10 is still in beta, even if it has improved compatibility and it fixed many bugs. Most people just stick to defaults.

>Any good UI and functional software will have a search bar.
Hell, the often regarded as masters of good UI design, Apple, have global search for every app on macOS. That's how essential search is that even they have it with their dumb and simplistic UI choices because a simplistic UI does not mean the software lacks features and you will need to search and find those features somehow.

People that want a UI without search and without any options or features whatsoever would be better served by a Fisher Price kids toy.

Your OS will almost never go over 70GB-100GB of storage even if all you use are flatpaks, appimages and distroboxed packages. It's your downloads that will consume most of the space (movies, games, etc. or your personal photos/videos if you store those on PC).
If you have 2 large drives, just use one and use the 2nd one for backups. Or, if one of your drives is smaller (120-300GB) you can use that for everything except your Downloads directory, which you should link to your other drive.
Having your entire /home on a different drive is pointless unless you expect your system drive to fail and you'll reinstall the same distro once it does. In which case it's better to just set up backups anyway.

Use LVM, make the volumes small and expand them as needed later.
LVM was made exactly for this purpose.
partition-manager is the best program for managing your disks, and it makes LVM usage a breeze.

I never, ever had this problem, in decades of using computers. Filling them all up just naturally happens.

Good evening, I installed the native version of a game

but then installed the proton one, my question is

wher can I find this native version of the games so I can delete it and not end up with two big 100gb games?

thank you

Still think it's a good idea to vendor all of those different copies of different libraries in /nix?
>>
I ordered a new 2TB M.2 SSD, I'll be installing gentoo on it but what filesystem should I choose? ZFS looks cool but gentoo wiki makes it seem like a pain on linux to manage.
>>
Going to buy a vivobook 16 for college, I've been thinking of try linux mint cinnamon instead of Windows 11. Is it worth it? I am not going to use it for programming; I just need to open PDFs and to use Office (I don't mind if I have to use a non-Windows equivalent).

I'm trying to setup a vpn via a wireguard connection and then run a program (ie firefox) via firejail with something like `firejail --net=wg0 firefox`.
This would allow me to run arbitrary programs under specific, isolated networks - if the vpn goes down, my unprotected ethernet is not used as fallback and I also dont lose my router specific stuff for my local network.
I cant find a single post or something of someone getting this to work, and I'm really surprised because this doesnt feel like a novel idea at all
>>
>>106670213
if you're gonna do Gentoo doing zfs isn't any more complicated.
>>
>>106670213
Just use BTRFS. I have ZFS on root because I used to have a storage array on ZFS so thought I might as well use it on root too but I wouldn't do that again. It's manageable for me because I have my own custom initramfs with ZFS tools embedded and also build ZFS statically into my kernel (this means I never run into any issues with the kernel module because if the kernel doesn't compile then I'm not installing it) but today I'd just go with BTRFS all the way. It's matured a lot.

Bcachefs is interesting for its tiered storage but it just got the boot from the kernel because Kent is a dick.
>>
>>106670239
I guess I'll look into BTRFS then, thanks anon. I don't really want to manage the initramfs contents manually, I really like gentoo but I prefer as little hassle as possible because hassle is mostly boring. I've been using XFS on my current SSD but I really like the features of ZFS and BTRFS so I'd really like to do the switch.
>>
>>106670279
what's the point of Gentoo if you're not going to modify your kernel config or dracut? Adding the zfs module to dracut is a simple task. your bootloader will be more complicated if you retain kernels in the zfs filesystem, but you don't have to. really... Why gentoo at all?

My experience of gentoo is that it literally just works. Portage is good, I don't know what to say, I don't like compiling stuff but I can't see myself using any other distro either. I guess the little hassle is the price I'm willing to pay for performance and stability.

if you were to choose between openrc and runit which one would you pick and why?
after reading their docs ive come to conclude that both seem more complicated than they need to be.

Ignore the other faggot. Mint is fine for everyday use, Cinnamon specifically may feel a bit "outdated" but works just fine. I've heard Cinnamon doesn't perform good on laptops but I've never used it on a laptop before so ymmv, in any case you can always try xfce. You can avoid the terminal if you're not comfortable with it, but I suggest you to at least get familiar with some basic stuff (how to (un)install a package, how to move files around, how to edit a text file, etc.). If you need any program, Flathub should get you covered, look into what it is and how it works to avoid problems. Also look into btrfs and Timeshift, it's a neat way of keeping backups of your system in case you fuck up your Linux. Good luck fren.
>>106671768
I've never used runit before, but openrc just works. If a program I use needs an openrc script I just install the corresponding package and add the service to the runlevel. I don't really mess around with it too much, so there's nothing much I can say about it.

Is there anyway to recalibrate or using screen panel profile on linux? I have an x270 with TN panel running Tixie Plasma.

There is no 'rankmirrors' package or 'pacman-contrib' package in the Artix repositories so it's not even possible to use the command that it says to use in the Artix mirror list file to be able to find the best/closest mirror to me. What even is this shit bro
>>
>>106672146
Oh, well nvm. I found out, after uncommenting the mirrors I needed from the arch mirror list, that for some reason the Arch repos I added not having their databases downloaded was preventing me from installing anything at all, even from the repositories that were perfectly functional. Ok then. I thought the error I was getting wasn't preventing me from searching/installing from the Artix repos.
>>
>>106671768
runit is pure Rube Goldberg fuckery. You use it because it's funny not because it works better. To be real it's the best reason to use any non-systemd service manager.
