The reason leetcode interviews exists is because companies are legally not allowed to test your IQ.
The loophole is to administer what is effectively an IQ test but they can claim that they are testing job-relevant skills.

I went to Uni with people who got As and didn't know how to do basic EEE and Python. Most of them disappeared 1st year.

For people who don't get the joke, Jarred (the guy who wrote bun (a js runtime in zig) couldn't get a job at FAGMAN due to their hiring practices, being a highschool dropout etc.
Zig is a data-oriented language which means you can essentially change up your structs after you've written the high level code without having to rewrite that code. Makes it many times easier to be performant on target hardware.

He who seeks for methods without having a definite problem in mind seeks for the most part in vain.
We already have a well defined set of basic primatives that you must learn asm+c everything else is build ontop of this to solve specific problems.
If I was hiring not knowing a flags, address arithmetic, pointers, how to add two numbers is a much bigger red flag than not knowing what a file or tree is.
If they know the basics of the c language or of any assembly language I can easily teach them how to write a tree. If they know how to write a tree, but don't understand the basics of c or asm then they literally just memorized it from a book/class or whatever.

Schools had higher standards back then and if you were able to get in and graduate, companies felt safe assuming you were at least 120+. Then politicians and activists started noticing that people with college degrees earned significantly more than those without degrees. I'm in Europe but I had an explicit IQ test like questions when applying to a huge American tech company, so I'm pretty sure that's bs. Shit like mental rotation, mental arithmetic, visual memory, etc., none of which had anything to do with the position. I literally got rejected based on this initial test. software is a long stretch from being a scribe job for women like it used to be but it isn't radically different either. leetcode type questions fundamentally test abstraction. In theory well designed word problems do not give away the type of question that is being asked and require some initial thought about how to translate the problem into something you know how to solve and this is the only "difficult" step. Poorly built leetcode type questions give away the core of the problem right away and then imply that an optimal solution is required which just means you needed to memorize the solution a smart person came up with 20 years ago. No one expects you no matter how smart to rederive a the same solution if you haven't seen it already unless your specialty is algorithm design and analysis which for 99.5% of devs it isn't.

I'm saying since we can only gauge intelligence in a man's ability to recognize patterns, then a test that's fairly simple in its essense and is only about finding a pattern is the best you can get, since it doesn't rely on pretty much any knowledge whatsoever, just your raw pattern-finding ability.
The only ways you can "train" for this shit are either remembering as many tasks as possible or simply preparing your mental state, ensuring you're not sleepy or malnutritioned, stuff like that. I say it's good enough, and we apparently even have some evidence it's kinda working.
Problem with leetcode is that it is indeed trainable, but a good interviewer will know how to use it regardless. I've had 2 buddies who both had leetcode problems at the interviews, one solved 4, the other 1 and a half. The latter was rated higher for this task, why? Because instead of seeing the guy just remember how to solve each problem, he saw the way the guy thought, his approach at solving something he's clearly seen for the first time.
