Is e-paper good tech? Why don't anon use it?
color e-ink is too expensive.
>>106671304I had a Viwoods AI Paper that was pretty sweet. But it was also $500.I sent it back.Really fun tech. Really handy and portable. But I'd never get $500 out of it when paper and a Pilot G2 with Pentel Energel ink in there works pretty good. Organization issues, but still not entirely worth $500.When it gets to $200?Insta-buy
>>106671409>"I want e-ink to take off more because it's neat">*proceeds to burden the companies that handle the logic's for delivering these things and then wonder's why e-ink isn't more popular and or why it's still expensive*(You) are the problem anon, also that tablet is probably sitting in a landfill now AND when they do get cheaper it will be because some shitty company crams a bunch of ads into it.FUCK YOU
>>106671391Color e-ink is SHIT, either really slow refreshing, or in the case of Kaleido, darkens the screen to the point where you need to turn on the glowlight even in a well lit place, which defeats half the purpose of e-paper devices (battery life). All these drawbacks and the colors still look bad.
>>106671304usecase for non-physical books?
>>106671391>waaaaaahhhhhh being an early adopter for new tech is so inconvenient!!!!!Pucker up so future generations.
I got a hisense touch, an android e ink device. I really like it for reading and hifi chip
>>106671304I've tried all kinds of usecases with a boox nova 3, boox go 7 color, and remarkable 2. Manga reading, novel reading, note taking, home assistant wall terminal, etc. The only thing epaper was good at was novel reading and b/w pdf or newspaper reading. Even with color it was shit at reading manga and it's way too slow to comfortably take notes.A normal tablet can do everything except novel reading better. I only use my go 7 color for novels and bought a samsung tablet to do everything else.
>>106671304Cause im poor
>>106671712>Even with color it was shit at reading manga and it's way too slow to comfortably take notes.Isn't color stuff just plain worse than BW because of the blue tint and darkening from the Kaleido layer? I was considering some 9in+ black and white ereader with expandable storage to read manga with.
>>106671695i bought one of the first kindle models and gifted a couple. i've paid my dues.
>>106671829>kindleOkay, support a company other than Amazon now because Amazon back then could sell those at a loss and still make a profit.>https://shop.dasung.com/
>>106671782Slightly worse but only noticeable to me when I hold a color and b/w eink display side by side. I'm fine with it since at the time the color and b/w versions of the Go were the same price. I wouldn't pay extra for color.
I have a Paper Pro Move, it's pretty QLZ as the kids say these days.
>>106671304You're talking about the ones you can write on with an expensive e-pen thing right? I only have an e-reader (Kobo Clara Color) and I like it, I never really use it for anything with color but e-readers are so nice on the eyes.
>>106671304i do i got a paperwhite in 2013 and am using a kobo libre color now
>>106672249>Paper Pro Moveisn't that the one where remarkable straight up lied about the battery life?
The eink company is extremely jewish
It's around 80% good for its intended purpose, which is low refresh rate B&W book reading. There aren't really many improvements that could take it to 100%, because increasing the refresh rate and clock speed torpedoes the battery life.
>>106671563Reflective display don't strain your eyes with weird light. The technology was developed decades ago by Liquavista, bought by Samsung, then mysteriously vanished. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6tzaIgZKs0https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bf1GjCaYzYg
I kind of want to get one of these e-readers. Anyone have any good recommendations?I just want one that lets me load up PDFs or whatever file type people put ebooks in, and turn the page with physical buttons.Couldn't care less about account linking, cloud sync, color displays, apps, touch screens, or whatever else. I just want to read any of thousands of books that I load on to the device. Hopefully with battery that lasts long enough to not be annoying.
>>106671304>e inkthis is an elaborate marketing scam. you wont need or want one
I love it. Never went back to paper format again
>>106673474If you read scans or pdf/djvu then you need big screens for reading like 8" or even more. For epub/mobi/azw you can buy ereader with small screen like 6" or 7".Amazon and Kobo make high quality ereaders but they need to register an account. PocketBook also make high quality ereaders and you don't need to register an account. Onyx Boox makes not that high quality ereaders like others but if you want Android on your ereader then you can try it. Also there are Barnes&Noble Nooks. They are high quality devices.
cheap garbage tech that is only expensive because the creators have a patent
>>106671483>need to turn on the glowlight even in a well lit placeThat's wrong. In work conditions and with daylight it works fine without.
>>106673474Boox Note Max with bluetooth page turner.
>>106671391The price difference has become minor.Boox Go 7 is $220 for the b&w version and $250 for color. The larger models don't have a direct comparison but the 10" Note Air 4C is $500 and the 13.3" Tab X C is $760.We've come a long way since the $420 Nova 3 Color with Kaleido Plus.
>>106674772>Amazon and Kobo make high quality ereaders but they need to register an account.Kobo devices just check for a row in a sqlite table stored on the same partition you copy books to. You can take it out the box, plug it in over USB, insert into user(UserID, UserKey) values('fuck', 'spiders'); -- and leave it disconnected from the internet forever.
good for reading, bad for everything else, using the same kindle 2 for like 15 years, perfection
>>106675689yep kobo is great. have had the same thing for years and its easy to add stuff.
>>106674772I jailbroke my kindle and it doesn't even contact amazon anymore.
>>106675689You don't have to do that. adding SideloadedMode=true to Kobo eReader.conf is enough.
>>106671391>color e-inkit's not ready all the devices are assit's e-ink but 100x worse and the colour is crazy shit like anything you look at is is blatantly NOT that colour
i would have expected anons here to have found an obscure chinese e-reader thats completely offline only, loads via microSD or USB, is only B&W and has physical page turn buttonsbut it hasnt happenedits really odd how hard it is to find that
>>1066747728" as a format is dying. Kobo Sage came out four years ago with no successor in sight. The prices for the smaller 7" models have risen while those for the 10" models have fallen so there isn't much room where a 8" model can exist.
>>106676450Boox Go 7 b&w isn't exactly obscure.
>>106674772>PocketBook also make high quality ereadersThat used to be the case but they've dropped most features that made them stand out like the microSD slots.Their newer models are just rebranded Bigme devices.>Also there are Barnes&Noble Nooks. They are high quality devices.Nooks shit the bed when they outsourced software development. They also run a gimped version of Android.
>>106676477it has android though, no?having something as simple as an e-reader running android just seems so bloated to me
>>106676519It has its advantages. You can install reader software or utilities like keyboards without limiting yourself to things like Koreader. And it generally works fine. Nook or Tolino also run Android.
>>106676477anon it even has speakers and wifi connectivity and bluetooth and shitnot at all the sort of thing i was thinking ofa device that does nothing else other than display e-bookswhy is that so ... non-existentwhy are e-readers trying to be ipadsits weird
>>106676565>>106676574ill probably end up getting kobo libra 2 i like the designits just so weird to me that theres nothing cheap that just does 1 thingif there is I cant find it
>>106676436>like anything you look at is is blatantly NOT that colourSometimes the exact colour doesn't matter. If you've got a map or chart you need to know which part is red and which is blue, not what shade of red or blue it is.
>>106676574You don't have to use them if you don't need them. But some people like those features and all devices without Wifi have failed.Bluetooth comes handy when you want to connect page turning and basic audio is used for text to speech or audio books.None of those are going to make a huge difference for the price.
>>106676510>Their newer models are just rebranded Bigme devices. Why would you think that? Some 10" PocketBook models with Android now but they not rebranded Bigme. Another PocketBook models have firmware based on Linux.
>>106671304>get kindle>try to read a textbook on it>suddenly realize how necessary color is in textbooksDO NOT GET THE BLACK AND WHITE ONE
>>106676641>You don't have to use them if you don't need them.i have read this far too many times during my search, i already know that and its obvioushaving none of it is still preferable, im sure the battery at least would last a lot longer, if you want a tangible benefiti think a cheap reader with a large battery and a decent screen, no android, wide file format support and physical buttons on the side should do wellfuck consoomers
>>106676692so many people buy them when they really need a tablet kindles are only for reading like fiction and non-fiction books anything that needs any kinds of pictures or diagrams is a bad time
>>106676450>i would have expected anons here to have found an obscure chinese e-reader thats completely offline only, loads via microSD or USB, is only B&W and has physical page turn buttons>but it hasnt happened>its really odd how hard it is to find thatMeebook M7, got one last Black Friday cheap, has everything you mentioned, works greathttps://www.amazon.com/Meebook-Reader-M7-Processor-Micro-SD/dp/B0CDBYFH81
>>106676711>kindles are only for reading like fiction and non-fiction booksyet so many readers try and be tabletsits lowkey infuriatingtake pic rel, remove the android, remove the antennas, same battery or better.. it would be perfect>>106676727appreciate you anon <3 but..>android>wifi>bluetooth>THREE GIG of RAM>audio (why? im reading)why is there no modern equivalent of the Sony PRS-350
>>106676711The stupid thing is I already have a tablet. Idk why I thought this would make me read more. /lit/ is all convinced it’s better on the eyes or something. It feels exactly the same as reading off of any other screen.
>>106676704>im sure the battery at least would last a lot longerYou can disable WiFi and Bluetooth.
>>106676775Kobo doesn't even use Android. Shut up and learn how to write.
>>106676936loads made that mistake most kindles and ereaders gather dust unless you're the kind of person that buys hundreds of books a year anyway. And the other anon is right, they are constantly trying to compete with tablets and claiming to be good for any text-based media when they suck for anything except black and white books
>>106676987>Shut up and learn how to write.how about you stop being such a rude faggot and learn how to speak to people
>>106676936It blends in with the surroundings and you can actually use it outside. What exactly do you need a tablet for other than reading? You've already got a computer and possibly TV.
>>106677180>outsideWhat?
So what's a good ereader for manga?
>>106678055ipad
>>106678055a tablet with mihon
>>106671304>eInk still "flashes" because it can't refresh the screen cleanly>eInk adopters see this as a good thing and nothing to complain aboutNo. eInk is shit until I can turn a page without being flashbanged.
I'm on my ~5th Kobo in like 15 years. Really nothing I'd want an ebook reader to do that they haven't been doing very well for over a decade now.
>>106678055Boox Tab X C
>>106678346What was the last model you tried? You can literally watch videos on them.
>>106677924Do you have your curtains permanently closed?
>>106678459But why are you buying a new one every three years? I've been using my first kobo for ten years now, running koreader
>>106676936>Idk why I thought this would make me read more.If you're not already reading, a kindle isn't going to make you start doing it. It's just blind consumerism.
>>106678906It can happen. I got a large Boox for writing and to use as a monitor and I ended up using it for reading far more than anything else.
>>106671304I have the kobo libra colour. I got it so I can get motivated to read a book once in a while because I spent money on it. It worked. I read two books this year and some manga. I took this pic on a trip. There's a clear difference between the black and white and colour ones, but I wanted the whole 7 inches and the black and white one was to small for me. In daylight it's not noticeable unless they are next to each other. In artificial light it needs the glowlight, but it is not tiring to the eyes so I kept it.
>>106678055>So what's a good ereader for manga?Framework 12 if they ever add an e-ink option.>>106678346We've got e-ink displays that can run at 40/60hrtz now.
>>10667906516:10 is a poor choice for manga. 7:5 is the best while 4:3 and 3:2 are acceptable.
>>106678459my jailbroken kindle is like 8 years old. unless i get color, the only slight improvement i'd get on an upgrade is better contrast. it's just not worth it.
>>106679125>16:10 is a poor choice for manga. 7:5 is the best while 4:3 and 3:2 are acceptable.Just turn off like half of your pixels then. I do that sometimes on my ancient PC running ancient and antiquated Mesa graphics. Maybe one day I'll be able to join the big boys and have a modern i3 running UHD graphics with DDR5 RAM.
