was technology being a bit more 'complicated' back in the day make us better, smarter and more rounded people?
>>
>>106675860
ball mice were much simpler in function then optical
>>
>>106675871
not in practise because my optical mouse hasn't malfunctioned in 5 years but my old ball mouse would often need cleaning and taking apart.
I agree with OP that life was better when things moved a bit slower and you had to use your brain at least a tiny bit if you wanted to make a computer do something.
I think social media / 24 hour news cycle has ruined people's brains a lot more than easy to use consumer technology though

trackballs still use balls
and yeah they get clogged up with gunk
>>
>>106675964
you're not supposed to reuse them you're supposed to get a new egg. i lost many CS tournaments this way
>>
>>106676037
you're supposed to tuck them back in your sack after use to heal, using the other one in the meantime
>>
>>106675913
You're conflating things. Constantly being bombarded with news and entertainment through technology most likely affects us psychologically, but that's hardly related to having a shit mouse you have to clean occasionally.
You can develop problem solving skills regardless of how user friendly your tools are.

They put the ball on the wrong side of the mouse
>>

Not just more complicated, but less abstracted. It's specifically a problem with technology that's made to appeal to as many users as possible - e.g. smartphones - which in the process abstracts away entirely how things actually work, allowing people who don't understand anything to still use it to a limited degree - but only to a limited degree.
Old technology was more honest. The overdesigned, normalfag-facing technology isn't. Therein lies the issue.

You don't even understand what the point of technology is
>>
>>106676250
The point of technology is irrelevant

Entertainment is so insanely cheap nowadays.
Most of the shit you did on a PC was to entertain yourselves either with a vidya game, tv/anime/movies or the internet.
The struggle to do certain things made you appreciate it more.
Now anyone with $50 to their name can get a device to blow out their snapases and dopamine receptors in an instant.

I feel as though I have to make things harder like torrent a movie versus just wipping out a credit card just to regulate my consumption.

Knowing how things work was a side effect. My first serious use with ssh and a terminal was making a VPN because my ISP was being shitty. I got familiar with my router knowing what ports and IPs are trying to host a game server. It's basic knowledge but it's more than what anyone has to deal with and thus have no exposure to this stuff.
>>
>>106676263
The point of technology is to be useful to people, making it user friendly is not a "problem"
>>
>>106676276
And the point of crystal meth is to make you high, that doesn't mean that the high is "not a problem".

I was tricked by an above average amound of words into reading this babble you're arguing with clouds emitted by imaginary windmills
>>
>>106675860
No, the issue you're referring to happens because corporations and goverments have been in constant psycological warfare against the general populace for at least 2 decades now.
>>
Old computers were so horrible I cut my fingers so much on all that fucking sheet metal shoving in stiff as fuck huge ribbon cables I would never go back
>>
>>106675860
I use a trackball and still need to clean it out like it's 2000.
>>
>>106675860
Technology is more complicated than ever assuming you want to properly administer your devices.
>>106676276
Being user friendly means not spying on them.

No. Olfags will mald and seethe, but it's true. Lots of this old tech can go straight into the dumpster next to typewriters and manual transmission cars.

Yeah, people even came up with a fake injury (RSI) to avoid having to use them at work.
