Vpn --> tor = ISP can't see tor traffic therefore a subpoena asking the ISP if you were on tor between 3:23 am to 3:51 wouldnt be able to be answered. They'd just see generic VPN packets
Wouldn't VPN -> Tor -> VPN be the most secure method of browsing if you were doing something naughty and your threat model are like state sponsored actors / oppressive government regime / spies? You need to hide that you're using TOR from your local network, then you bounce your shit around tor, finally your exit node connects to another VPN so when you connect to your final destination you show up as a random vpn user and not a tor user. I've never done this because I'm not a criminal but now i'm curious.

Also if you are worried so much about being de-anonymized, you should probably think more about the environment you connect to Tor on, and maybe not use a browser with the largest attack surface known to mankind.
