I know at least for Firefox, Mozilla developers reverse-engineered the mechanism & use it to let you set Firefox as the default browser in-app, which makes Microsoft screech (they want to add friction to the process so they try to force the user to use the Settings app to change the default browser, hoping the average user is too retarded to accomplish this). Presumably Microsoft now tries to detect "mis-use" of the mechanism & undoes the change, under the guise that "a problem was detected" (the problem being that an application tried to use undocumented APIs).
