/flt/ - Friendly Linux Mint Thread

>How do I activate Linux Mint?
you don’t, it’s already yours

>Office?
LibreOffice preinstalled, saves to MS formats
Other Office alternatives are in the repos if you want.
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

>Which edition?
Cinnamon – default, modern, smooth - Win 7
MATE – classic, light, stable - XP
Xfce – ultra light, runs on a - 2k
LMDE – fallback if Ubuntu isn't worth forking in the future.

>Installing software
Software Manager = point & click
sudo apt install <program> = easy mode
Flatpak built in (enable unverified packages
Snap not included (good)
.deb = best integration, Flatpak sandboxed so drag n drop might not work.

>What’s preinstalled?
Firefox, LibreOffice, VLC, Timeshift, Update Manager
no Candy Crush

>Debloat?
None needed, it’s clean out of the box. No one will stop you from removing stuff you don't want.

>ISOs
linuxmint.com/download.php
mirrors: linuxmint.com/mirrors.php

>Backups and portable software
most stuff lives in /home, back that up
AppImage = portable apps
Clonezilla = full backup
Mint doesn’t care about hardware swaps. You can use the same install across different machines.

>Useful stuff
KolorPaint
Kdenlive
OBS
Steam
MPV
Pinta
GNOME Disks
Use the Search option in Software Manager with Windows app names, alternatives pop up.

>I miss WindowsXX
Cinnamon acts like Win 7.
If you need an older UI try another DE
Wine runs a lot of old software better than modern Windows

Just tried AoE2 1999 on wine and graphics are flickering and mouse sensitivity is anal for some reason after turning acceleration down.

One of you fuckers needs to make a precompiled troonix config with aerothemeplasma fully working/preinstalled on it already:

https://gitgud.io/wackyideas/aerothemeplasma/-/blob/master/INSTALL.md

Ain't nobody got time fo dat. I can't be fucking bothered to run all these tinkertranny scripts and just want to take it for a test spin on my other rig

unrelated question but could you make your own yubikey with a cheap old USB of your own? or at least something safe enough? like example provide root access when plugged in versus having to provide a password every time on request.

Any reasons/experience with "-open" vs full proprietary NV driver?
How come production branch has >ver than beta?

Spent most the afternoon fixing my system after going 21.3 -> 22 -> 22.2. These new modal dialogs (shutdown, password prompt..) are fucking ugly gonna need to edit the css next

can anyone tell me why apt-get install isn't working
>>

Neither apt or sudo appears to be installed. Did it ever work on this system? Maybe your PATH is broken. Try su if you have a root pwd set
>>
I just installed linux mint and it takes up 10 GB. What makes it so bloated and what should I remove other than the obvious like email client and libreoffice?
>>
>>106708987
Check baobab aka Disk Usage Analyser. Timeshift on by default iirc that'll eat some space

As opposed to Windows where... it doesn't run in the first place
