Thinking of getting the Logitech MX Ergo as my first trackball mouse. Around here it costs 90€. Does anyone have any better alternatives/suggestions? What are your opinions on thumb vs index trackballs?

I mean, future plans include building some diy split keyboard and maybe it includes a trackball, but one experiment at a time

as someone who is ball-less, please help me understand

you move the cursor with the optical sensor under the mouse, so what does the trackball do?

The "mouse" doesn't move. You move the cursor with your thumb on the ball.

oh I see. I don't think I could adjust to that easily

i got the ergo m575 to test it out and it's been great. i use it exclusively except for gaming and image editing. it's just comfy.

I would recommend spending a little less until you know if you actually like it or not. The Elecom EX-G can be had pretty cheaply and is basically the same shit.

Finger trackballs are objectively superior to thumb balls. Wireless is a waste of time, and most trackballs on the market are not fit for purpose due to poor design. I've never seen a good thumb ball, and I can count the number of good finger balls on one hand.

L-trac is the best trackball, using steel rollers. Gameball is the only static bearing trackball on the market I would use, and 99% of trackballs on the market are static bearing, and the rest are junk. Elecom, Kensington, and Logitech all make cheap junk, if you want to buy one of these trackballs you're better off skipping the middle man and buying Nuela or similar chinkballs, they all have similar issues but at least you'll be paying less.

get the MX Ergo S instead, it has USB C.
imo its not good for games, but nice for regular work. being able to use it on a confined space like an armrest or on a glass surface is neat too

Whats wrong with wireless? Its convenient to use with a laptop when moving between places

I get it for regular mice, but trackballs don't move. If you bought a shit laptop without any USB ports, maybe. But even then, bluetooth is dogshit and even the 2.4ghz in most of these trackballs isn't great.

Try it out in store if you can, it's better than ordering 20 mice and returning 19 or 20 of them.

I had an mx ergo and the wireless sucked, constantly went to sleep even though I had it plugged in all the time, and then after a few months something broke and it just stopped working.
I replaced it with a perimice-520 which feels a bit like a cheap plastic toy, but it is wired and has been reliably working for probably a few years at this point.
