pretty comfy to have only those sound cards available in the market
>>
>>106705045
IBM PC speaker sure is a great sound card OP
>>
>>106705045
Why?
>>
>>106705055
quality, not quantity
>>
>>106705077
Half of them were poor quality and still rather costly, the other half were too costly for most consumers to justify.

Gravis UltraSound MAX Master Race checking in

I still find it hard to believe how Adlib missed the boat so dramatically.
From virtual monopoly to irrelevant in very few years.
>>
For me, it was:

Nvidia SoundStorm on nForce2 chipset.

the roland mt-32 will make you shit brix

you can make a lot of cool music with basic oscillators but the pc speaker with its single square wave was and always will be crap

Out of those Adlib Gold has the best FM music (but only like 3 games bothered to max it out, all from the same musician) and GUS has the best PCM synth (but has dodgy FM support).

MT32 is a joke, SC55/88 are great tho.
>>
>>106706899
AWE32 had broken OPL emulation (on most versions? I recall one or two cards actually had the chip, but most others didn't).
The PCM part on it was great but most games used the OPL FM.
>>
>>106705077
The only one on that list that matched the capabilities of Amiga and Macintosh at the time was the Gravis Ultrasound, and that cost more than your average consumer PC just for the card.
>>
>>106707010
And it came out like 7 years after the Amiga.
>>
>>106706974
Some models had real OPL chips yeah, AWE is pretty neat when you have a real OPL and lots of onboard memory on the card, best of both worlds.
>>
>>106707120
>Some models had real OPL chips yeah

Yeah, on like, one or two out of 10+ versions, and even on those it sometimes just had the Creative labeled OPL which was their own CQM chip.
>>
>>106707156
I've had several with Yamaha chips, no point in even getting an AWE32 without a real OPL.
>>
>>106705045
For me it was Gravis UltraSound.
I think I still have this CD somewhere.
>>
>>106705135
are you implying that the usb audio device somehow doesn't qualify as an audio device?

MT-32 is based, you don't know what you're talking about.

>>106708289
That's an audio interface, not really the same thing as a 'sound card' which has some kind of synth onboard. In the classical sense.
