Fuck that shit, genuine downgrade from Windows live messenger.
>>
>>106707680
fun thing it was peer2peer and you just needed to CALL somebody with wireshark opened, guy had to only be online, didn't need to answer the call and you got his IP

>fun thing it was peer2peer and you just needed to CALL somebody with wireshark opened, guy had to only be online, didn't need to answer the call and you got his IP
I had similar issues of skype leaking IPs, but I just think it was better (WLM).
>>
>>106707635
me too. all the sounds like when getting called are stuck in my head forever
>>
I remember there was a (Windows) app I'd use back in the early 2000s that supported all the popular messengers in one, so you could have your ICQ, MSN, etc. accounts in one app. Anyone remember what that was?
>>
don't mess with the pope, mess with messenger
>>
>>106707755
no I was talking about skype not WLM, I didn't use wlm
>>
>>106707890
Figured it out. Normies used Trillian - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trillian_(software) - which had one of those bloated "skinned" interfaces of the time think Neoplanet. But what I used was Pidgin, likely on Linux and Windows since I used both at the time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pidgin_(software)

Those were indeed the days.

Oh shit, I remember using this one (same idea) on Mac: https://adium.im

Whatever happened to multi-messengers?

I miss sending drawn messages to friends.
With how many phones and tablets have pen displays its weird that nobody's tried again
>>
>>106707962
Most messengers of the era had ads and multi-messengers didn't
There were also 5 trillion messengers so sometimes you'd have a single person on aim or yahoo or something and so running solely the official client was pointless.
>>
I remember when MSN Messenger first launched. At the time AOL was dominant, and Microsoft set up MSN Messenger so it could connect to AOL's network. Then AOL would block them. Then Microsoft would update to make it work again, rinse repeat. Eventually MSN overtook AOL and they stopped trying to hack them.

Holy shit remember when Ubuntu was BROWN???

I remember they'd actually main you Ubuntu discs for free, and since they were from South Africa or something their marketing was all brown people's skin.
>>
>>106708150
I ran it on an iBook at the time and Ubuntu would even mail out official PowerPC CDs for free. Still don't understand what their business model is how they make money.
>>
>>106707680
THIS.
Microsoft lost their userbase when they made that move almost overnight. Absolute retards, it was WLM they should have kept
>>
>>106708166
AAAAAAAGGGHHHHH GNOME 2 WAS SO FUCKINH SOULFUL!!!!

>you'll never cyber with chicks on MSN and Skype again
>>
>>106708581
>cyber
No one now would believe teens at the time used cyber as a verb just like this but we did.
>>
>>106708619
Yep.
>>
>>106708581
It was awesome chatting up chicks online and then finding out they actually had a webcam, at a time when they were still rare, the rest is obvious.
>>
I miss msn
>>
i wonder where do you guys spend your time on the internet now. like do you have social media or something or do you stick to forums?
>>
>>106708720
I use some forums and avoid most types of social media outside of mastodon.
I find the rightoids on twitter to be as annoying if not more annoying as the leftoids on bsky. Twitter is just a bunch of pissy bitch babies getting mad that a starbucks wagie didn't say "charlie kirk" out loud when their drink was ready
>>
>>106708315
unironically still using it since 2000. literally every single day I even bought an official licence key.
>>
>>106708720
I have some niche forums where I don't really post frequently, 4chan, and real life friends. Also an instagram account where I only add family or very close friends

still miss the old days of a free internet
>>
>>106708720
Discord, WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, Matrix, IRC, public and private forums and imageboards, rarely use actual social media like Facebook or Twitter.

You're thinking of libadwaita. MATE and non-libadwaita apps are still quite themable.
>>
>>106707635
>2007
>skype offers free calls to landlines for a year as promotion
>get on vent with friends after school
>make and record completely untraceable prank calls
Nothing this kino can happen again
>>
>>106709273
Man I remember doing that too. Good times.
