so I'd like to place a usb 3 (powered) hub with a bunch of usb HDDs a fair ways away from my pc in order to keep the local noise down. Am I correct to assume that I have to spend a 100 bux on an optical usb cable? and will this work with a powered hub?
>>106715178How many HDD? Each may draw up to 3amps on startup.

>>106715299>>106715178What you'd probably want is a real dock that accepts a 12v 3a power input. These start at around 15-20$. Usb 3 cables can be around 30cm top. I am not sure if a hub would be able to extend that. Usb 3 and c lose power and signal as you extend them, and you'd be using more bandwidth than usb 3 has for these 3 drives. Good luck.
thanks gary!
>>106715322yes, I already have the hub. its the 100 dollar optical cable that i do not have
Thank you, Gary!

>>10671539Thank you garry, but I dont know anything about optical usb cables. Normal cables can be up to 30cm and less than 50cm but only if really good quality maybe. As for powered hubs l, I wouldn't trust them. It's safer to have a dock that has it's own power.
>>106715178maybe ethernet to routerusb hub to to routerdisks to usb hublook for samba share
>>106715178thank you to Gary
>>106715178RJ45 is cheap USB cabling if you know how to solder. Not sure if the USB signal would reach long distances without major distortion.
>>106715178Your internet router might have a built in shared drive mode via the usb :PNot that it'll be fast
>>106715178damnthanks garyI could use this luck
