It's Monday, let's get this job hunt started again.

For anons who have moved cities for jobs: Is it easier to get a job once you are in the city or are you fine to apply before you move?

I'm in the eu. I decided to get a customer service job and a cheap place to rent (I also got neat relocation benefits from my commie government for a year), in the meantime I'm applying to it jobs
I figured that in the worst case I could move on to a helpdesk job with my customer service experience + cs degree in time and then go from there.
I still had to do physical work for around 6 months to make the move happen so there it is, 1 year (and counting) after graduating uni and still no it/dev job

new leetcode daily problem! rise and grind!
https://leetcode.com/problems/minimum-score-triangulation-of-polygon/description/
>You have a convex n-sided polygon where each vertex has an integer value. You are given an integer array values where values[i] is the value of the ith vertex in clockwise order.
>Polygon triangulation is a process where you divide a polygon into a set of triangles and the vertices of each triangle must also be vertices of the original polygon. Note that no other shapes other than triangles are allowed in the division. This process will result in n - 2 triangles.
>You will triangulate the polygon. For each triangle, the weight of that triangle is the product of the values at its vertices. The total score of the triangulation is the sum of these weights over all n - 2 triangles.
>Return the minimum possible score that you can achieve with some triangulation of the polygon.

EXAMPLE:
>Input: values = [3,7,4,5]
>Output: 144
>Explanation: There are two triangulations, with possible scores: 3*7*5 + 4*5*7 = 245, or 3*4*5 + 3*4*7 = 144. The minimum score is 144.

Generally initially you will get an online assignment on like hackerrank or some other platform its literally just a test no human interaction.

On meets/zoom interviews people use transcribers even overlays etc since you only need to share like your coderpad screen not your entire desktop. Heck even old school methods was having someone else in your ear or straight up another person in the room with you.

Pretty good - I'm leaving my current IT company for one I had worked for previously for the same position and pay but instead of a hour and 20 commute its 25 minutes. I handed my two weeks in after back to back 50-60 hour work weeks followed by thousands of miles being put on my car. I will go from on call every 3 weeks to on call every 3rd month for a week and it's a team of people at a large company that seems way more stable. I took a risk doing my current job to get a lot of experience to many facets of the field and I'm happy with where I'm going thankfully.

I know this thread isn't an IT thread but - everybody keep your heads up. Make applying to full time jobs your full time job - and don't give up. There's a light at the end of every tunnel even if it means digging ditches for a while. I started this new job a day after breaking up with my girlfriend of 4 years and on 3 hours of sleep to boot, and I wanted to kill myself some months but knew that the sacrifice was going to pay off in the end. Never stop trying bros

I had 40 minutes to solve this problem for a technical round and couldn't.

You are given a string that is split into substrings using a delimiter. Each substring can belong to one of the following categories:
alpha: contains only alphabets
numeric: contains only digits
spchar: contains only special characters
alphanumeric: contains a mix of alphabets and digits

You are also given a valid template consisting of one or more of these categories in order. The task is to check whether each substring in the given string matches the corresponding category defined in the template.
example: string - abc-123-acd-bff-345 template - [alpha,numeric] delimiter - hyphen (-)
should return true
>>
>>106745437

I want to say its okay and its just a hiccup, but I dont know your education / yoe / financial situation so failing this could be a nothingburger or it could be catastrophic
Either way this problem isnt too hard, and it has multiple layers of solutions depending on your mastery of your selected language. If you couldn't even do the most inefficient brute force loop check, it betrays a fundamental lack of programming ability.

What did you try to do?
>>
>>106743986

>>
>>106745590
NTA but is there better than brute force?
>>
>>106745546
You’ll get it next time anon just keep practicing
>>
>>106745748
Anon you just break up the input string by the delimiter and then go over every character in each substring and check if it matches the template.
>>
>>106745759
Yeah ik but is it possible to do better than o of n?
>>
>>106745767
No, but that's not exactly the point
This question is more practical than just autistic time complexity autism, because it gives the interviewer a chance to show off their language mastery.

The easiest and most efficient solution would be:
>split the string by the delimiter
>iterate over the remaining substrings using regex expressions
If you don't know the regex notation for your selected language this is a problem (and they're always confusing, this is the type of shit 99% of people will google)

Otherwise you would do something like:
>split the string by the delimiter
>make a dictionary for alphabet characters and another dictionary for digits (faster than an array)
>check the substrings by character to see if they match the dictionaries, if they don't, they're special characters

this is wrong for small lengths arrays dictionaries are not faster than arrays since computing a hash is quite expensive
>>106745437
bro that is quite easy you need to grind hella a lot more
i would also say this most likely one of the more "practical" leetcodes i have ever seen, high chances of you doing something similar when writing real code
>>
>>106746024
>this is wrong for small lengths arrays dictionaries are not faster than arrays since computing a hash is quite expensive
How would it not be faster? If you use an array you would need to use one of the Array.includes(x) functions which is basically iterating over the array again, thereby adding another 26 (alpha) + 10 (numeric) iterations to go over per character
Surely a hashmap at that point is faster

I thought data engineering was supposed to pay more at least.

Just dump it into chatGPT if it's online. Or have a friend on standby next time where you screen share and he copy pastas and tests the chatgpt solution then shows it on screen. Then you can type the problem out slowly. This is why its called jeetcode and I laugh at companies who keep asking harder questions thinking it'll lead to better candidates. No, not at all you just decrease the amount of genuine candidates passing but cheaters stay the same.

>>106744685
All sectors that pay well are rough. The only job growth I see is for jobs are ones with the combo package of awful pay + demand hard physical work. I wonder why we aren't in an official recession yet. I've seen recession periods that were brighter than now.
>>
>>106744666
They aren't that hard to find. Its just that medior salary ranges now pay for junior level and senior pays medior level. I don't just see salary stagnation but decrease.
>>
>>106746058
and how many operations you think is computing a hash and figuring out where that hash is? its likely hundreds+ and many of those operations are operations which CPU doesn't like
and sadly computer performance is not deterministic like that where you can just compute number of operations and say what is faster, each operation takes different amount of time, some operation can be done in parallel, how fast memory accesses depends on the past etc. etc.
big of oh n tells you very little about the actual real perforamnce of things
>>
>>106745437
I don't understand the template part but I'm assuming its a list of acceptable templates that each substring could be. That is, while there are 4 defined categories, if only 1 is present in the template list, then that's the only acceptable one for this run.

>create 2 functions: isAlpha(), isNumeric()
>create 4 booleans: isAlpha, isNumeric, isSpChar, isAlphaNumeric
>initialize all to true
>iterate over each character
>use isAlpha() on character
>if its true, mark isNumeric and isSpChar false
>if its false, mark isAlpha false and then call isNumeric()
>if its true, mark isSpChar false
>if its false, mark isNumeric and isAlphaNumeric false
>repeat for every character until you reach the delimiter. Whichever flags are still left true, check to see if those exist in the template list and if they do, print true/false or whatever output it is you're supposed to have
>reset all flags back to true, go to next character
>repeat until done

but it really is.
step 1: split the string by delimeter (use .split method())
step 2: iterate over the items. for each item and for each category check if it belongs to one of the categories. if it does, continue, if it doesn't return false
step 3: if you got here without returning false before, return true.
that's it.
to check if it belongs to a category either compare ASCII values or write a simple regex- isalpha = /^[A-Za-z]+$/.test(str), ..., isspecial = /^[^A-Za-z0-9]+$/.test(str)

that's why you split out the inner checkers as separate functions. it is medium to write a regex for "only letters and digits, must contain at least one of each" (must remember look-aheads) but it is easy to write a function that uses 3 regexes.
/^[A-Za-z0-9]+$/.test(str) &&  // only letters and digits

There's no saving grace towards indians

Black people, transfolk, libs, are at least have the tendency to be whiny and victim mentality, not exactly that annoying and you can just dismiss them and move on. They take all the fat bitches with them and thats good really leaving us with the cute ones.

Jeets whoever have this preinstalled superiority complex while their attitude are haughty to the maximum, literally the opposite of any sane person would qualify as having a decent manners.

Jeets would just straight up rape you and this will obviously ruin you and your loved ones memory for the rest of their lives.

Black people and somalis at least would just kill you so maybe you can immediately go to Heaven.

Trans and libs kills themselves and poisons their family with drugs and vaccines.

So, how do you want your people to be remembered? Whiny faggots who cant get a job at some konbini because you need a college degree?

Literally all of the jobs there will reject you. No American has ever gotten a job from jobs.now.

Those companies have no intention of hiring from the American citizen job market, even if Americans manage to tap into those Sunday newspaper jobs. It's a losing game from the start.

The whole point is for Americans to apply to those anyway out of spite just so that they no longer have a valid claim to not being able to attract local applicants as an excuse to hire saars on the cheap. Which MAYBE opens up the door to lawsuits, but at an agonizingly slow pace.

Angry mobs always get played and everyone can see an angry mob from a mile away. It might take 1 to 4 years. The thing is the angry mob doesnt know what it wants. They just want to go back to work.

The ideal would be for the mob to say we demand a free ride not we demand work.
Theyll demand a shovel and an office before a videogame controller and a sex doll. The bad actors will exploit that snd the mob will get played.

"Everyone" is just you in this scenario correct?

>have final round interview with company, meet with the ceo and then the coo after
>ceo straight up tells me they already gave someone else an offer but the team i interviewed with in previous steps really wanted me to still speak with him
>coo tells me he worked at palantir but the ceo kept nagging him to come work for his company until he decided to go for it
>2 days later get an email that they're not moving forward with me
>this is the same company that weeks prior had me do a 6 hour exercise that they were so "excited" with that an hour after the interview they wanted to schedule the final round

fuck if i know it feels like it should be. the ceo could have just not said a thing, it feels awful knowing you're their sloppy seconds
and if the team still wanted me to speak with him despite knowing they already gave another candidate an offer, does that mean the team didn't like who they gave the offer to anyway?
i may have dodged a bullet working for a company that would be so shitty, but im burning through my unemployment and im tired of interviewing

Any advice on how to switch jobs without relying on LinkedIndia? I hate that website so much
Thinking of just building a portfolio website but I mostly work on stuff that requires me to sign an NDA, and I don't like making fake project git repos, makes me feel icky lying to myself like that

The difference between we demand to work and we demand a free ride could be this.
A 20 hour work week, they pay the rent if theres any, $3000 and benefits. In the us other countries have different living costs.
Vs
Bullshit jobs and getting played by some tyrant. You guys will be on the tyrant enabler team. Baka.

I'm afraid I'm not cultured enough to know what this means
Also, I call it LinkedIndia but there's barely any Indians on my network and fortunately it's mostly just people from my own country I see in it
But I swear these LinkedIn fuckers are drinking from a poisoned water supply
Been on the industry for more than a decade but I really couldn't stand the HR speak and the "turning mundane moments into 'here's what this taught me about sales'" bullshit

Do you guys do research on the company before you apply or do you do it when you got an interview scheduled?
I've tried doing it for applications but I always find that most have the same core values that a 1/2 page resume/Cover Letter wouldn't be able to target vs in an interview where you can waffle on about shit.
>>
>>106753975
the only research worth doing is thelayoff and indeed/glasdoor keeping in mind that both heavily censor negative reviews
