The Labour Party, currently in government for the past 14 months after 14 years without a sniff of government, have an inexplicable fixation on weird Orwellian bullshit. They can't actually help the poor or bring about democratic socialism like they're supposed to, because the country is fucked, and they can't build anything because we're all out of money after the Conservatives completely failed to fix the country after 2008, so all they have left is nanny-state interference and ID cards.

If they want people to prove their age then they not stop burying their head in the sand and regulate the age verification industry.

How can it be right that an age verification company can collect all sorts of personal information to prove your age and then store this indefinitely or sell it on to other companies?

The data protection act is insufficient to protect people here. They shouldn't be allowed to store or sell this data in the first place. Also it shouldn't be stored in foreign countries like many of them are based in. Let's keep age verification companies in the UK and keep the data in the UK.
>>
>>106742273
They're blocking my VPS connections in New York and Tokyo too but Tor is okay. What the hell?

I guess I need to setup transparent tor routing now too.
>>
>>106743813
That was easy, tor is packaged with OpenWRT and you only have to add some nftables rules to redirect to tors transport port.

Now I can close the tab because it turns out there's nothing interesting on Imgur.
>>
>>106743898
For anyone else using OpenWRT that wants to follow along:
# opkg in stable snapshots but I'm using the rolling snapshots where Apk has replaced Opkg
apk add tor
/etc/init.d/tor start
# NFtables setup
nft add table ip tor_nat
nft add chain ip tor_nat prerouting '{ type nat hook prerouting priority -100; }'
nft add rule ip tor_nat prerouting iifname "br-lan" ip daddr 199.232.192.193 tcp flags syn redirect to :9040
nft add rule ip tor_nat prerouting iifname "br-lan" ip daddr 199.232.196.193 tcp flags syn redirect to :9040
>>
>>106743699
The UK has had an opt-in porn ban for over a decade at this point. You literally have to tell your ISP "I want 18+ content", this site is behind the nationwide porn ban to begin with.

But nope, that wasn't enough, because this isn't about the age verification industry, it's about making it easier to arrest people over twitter posts.
>>
>>106739837
Based. Let's blockade the UK from the rest of the world.

>>106740405
Can't spell cuck without the UK
>>
>>106743921
Now with NFTable sets:
nft list table inet tor_nat
table inet tor_nat {
set tor_ipv4 {
type ipv4_addr
flags dynamic
elements = { 199.232.192.193, 199.232.196.193 }
}

set tor_ipv6 {
type ipv6_addr
flags dynamic
}

chain prerouting {
type nat hook prerouting priority dstnat; policy accept;
iifname "br-lan" ip daddr @tor_ipv4 tcp flags syn redirect to :9040
iifname "br-lan" ip6 daddr @tor_ipv6 tcp flags syn redirect to :9040
}
}

That's what I'm doing only I have my own little Rust daemon I've written that polls DNS. It works quite nicely. I was already using this little daemon to mark traffic to send over my VPS so I just had to modify it a bit to send some traffic over Tor instead.

This works really well because any device on the network can just access it now without having to run a VPN or Tor themselves and send all traffic over it which would needlessly slow things down and increase latency for no reason.

They're not going to care about some small image host. It was probably Ofcom that instigated this in the first place. My guess is they contacted them and said "What the hell. Children can see boobies here!" and asked them to add age verification which is practically impossible to add to an image host (it breaks all the links) so they did the only logical thing they could do and geoblocked the entire fucking country.

Who cares what its origin was when it was just a free image host that would let you use direct links. Only when uploaded did you have to interact with the site, to everyone else it was a sanitized catbox.
That changed some years ago and now even direct image links require you view it in the gallery to force adviews and conversions into the social media aspect of the site.

>“Imgur’s decision to restrict access in the UK is a commercial decision taken by the company and not a result of any action taken by Ofcom. It has not stated the reasons for its decision. Other services run by MediaLab remain available in the UK – such as Kik messenger, which has implemented age assurance to comply with the Online Safety Act.”

>>
>>106745463
>until the government mandate digital ID checks for all internet access
How will they implement that at a technical level though?
If only they'd thought this through we could have had a system that doesn't require ages verification because it's implicit in the design and implementation. Suppose there were a cryptographic measure where your device presents a digital certificate that "proves" you're over the age of 18, none of this crap would be necessary and no sketchy sharing of data with age verification services either.

Probably something like this is what the EU is going for with their age verification app?

Most are implementing the age verification but it's literally impossible to do that for an image host where people hotlink to the images. It's not like people are embedding an iframe window where they can run some custom JavaScript to verify people's identity. It's a fucking jpeg file.

Ofcom should really have displayed some common sense but that's asking too much of the regulator.

The only technical way I see of implementing this would be for Imgur to release some VPN program where you can verify your age and in turn they route the IP addresses imgur.com uses over it but this is way too complex and impractical.
>>
>>106745661
>Most are implementing the age verification but it's literally impossible to do that for an image host where people hotlink to the images
Considering imgur doesn't want to be used as just a CDN (because then they can't collect user data or ad revenue), I don't see the problem. Do they even still let you embed images? Every imgur link I click goes into their gallery anyway. They'd put the age verification there before delivering the content.

EU is already next but the system is different. Supposedly the system only tells what you want to tell, doesn't store store in a centralized system, and for login it's optional. However we all know what optional means and you need to read the code, trust the system, and laws, for that whole thing to be really just give what you want. Companies could also ask a lot more than you want to give like they do in Android.
>>
>>106747608
Power using money in politics is a burger way of thinking. That's not legal in many European countries. What you can say is that they have friends that help friends, in each country, and the EU is sort of a kingdom.
>>
I don't understand how a region block is supposed to protect them if the problem is being viewable there. I doubt any law says it only applies to ip addresses that should originate there instead of being physically there. That would mean being accessible by vpn is no different.
>>
>>106748332
OK but you have plausible deniability
>>
>>106748332
you'll have a hard time getting any judge to believe VPN users originated in the UK. ICO already lost a case where they handed a £10 million fine to a company because the company showed its customers are only US based. They'll probably still try to fine them based on prior access before the block.
>>
>>106748355
Is that enough to protect them for this law? How plausible is it if they know people are finding other ways they can't verify?
>>
>>106748332
Ofcom has confirmed geo-blocking the UK is a valid form of compliance with the OSA. It's not their problem if people use VPN's to get around it. However the act says you're still supposed to take action if you become aware that a child is using a VPN to bypass the block.
>>
>>106748332
btw how is ofcom suing 4chan working out?
I remember they threw them the finger because 4chan is an american website not beheld to UK laws. If a UK user comes to the website, the site has no legal imperative to abide by UK-specific laws. It'd be like expecting UK laws to permit a tourist to make demands while visiting a physical shop in a foreign country.
>>
>>106748479
I think 4chan is compliant anyway, they have a reports system and children don't know what the fuck a 4chan is.
>>
>>106748385
And how would the company be aware that a child is using the site with a VPN?
>>
>>106748515
Because of whatever bullshit AI heuristics tell them that, or human intuition.
>>
>>106748520
And why would imgur spend time on that? That would be finding justifications to lose.
>>
>>106741963
It's a legal thing, unrelated to the Online Safety Act: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4gzxv5gy3qo

>Image-hosting platform Imgur has blocked people in the UK from accessing its content.
>UK users trying to access Imgur on Tuesday were met with an error message saying "content not available in your region" - with Imgur content shared on other websites also no longer showing.
>The UK's data watchdog, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), said it recently notified the platform's parent company, MediaLab AI, of plans to fine Imgur after probing its approach to age checks and use of children's personal data.
>The ICO launched its investigation into Imgur in March - saying it would probe whether the companies were complying with both the UK's data protection laws, and the children's code.
>>
>>106748530
They have analytics all over the webpage like everyone else. If they know a child (specifically from the UK) is using the site and do nothing then that's against the act. If they don't know then it's fine.
>>
>>106748515
IP packets send by children have a different smell.
>>
>>106748552
So if I understood correctly if imgur somehow knows children are using the site and see adult content anyway, then they are not in compliance. I don't think that's possible with analytics. I can be an adult and behave like a children in the internet. The only way I see this making sense if registered UK users tell their age and country is a origin and there's not enough protection from adult content, then ICO or Ofcom have justification. Not that it will go anywhere because USA doesn't accept fines from UK.
>>
>>106748624
Pretty much, yeah. The whole thing is very stupid. The UK can issue a fine but it's never getting paid unless they agree to voluntarily. The most they could do is detain their management if they ever flew to the UK.
>>
could see an accidental byproduct of this being a spread of more smaller sites that are basically too small for the UK to care about that just do it.
Instead of imgur as an image host just use one of like 30 smaller ones that aren't blocking the UK.
accidently positive possible (of course this doesn't mean its good and UK and its people are all enslaved humiliated faggots)

Keir Starmer is the most aggressively soft-left centrist imaginable. He's not a communist. I watched his speech at the Labour conference earlier today (t. NEET) and he referred to "far-left extremist ideas like wealth taxes". The man's a fucking retard.

You couldn't require this for one country, you'd have to require checking valid ID for everyone in the world to be sure someone isn't trying to appear as from somewhere else. If some other country were to say that much information can't be collected for them, now it's impossible to comply with both, which is another reason why it makes no sense to apply it to sites without some sort of physical presence or money involved.
>>
>>106748695
>>Instead of imgur as an image host just use one of like 30 smaller ones that aren't blocking the UK.

I don't think it's really dawning on people how many sites are being investigated right now

Actually preventing children from seeing the content isn't part of the law, hilariously. You just need to make all the efforts the law specifies to make it harder for them to see it. If a child gets through, that's fine as long as you've done everything the law requires. We had debates where politicians openly admitted the law wouldn't work, "but still, we have to do something!"

From nuclear power to mail to fucking lumber and mining for some fucking reason; you name it and they'll claim to be a powerhouse in it. Its genuinely comical.

The guy is literally a fascist wearing a liberal coat of paint just like most of the "leftists" you see on mainstream. His one and only principle is to achieve power, what he believes or tells you he believes is irrelevant, his actual motive is just to amass power and censorship is one of the tools fascists use to do that.

I will give bongs credit: The protests against this shit are still going on, for all teh good they do.

What should really happen is people amass the names and information of every. single. one. of the current administrations stooges, politicians, and judges. And the microsecond Keir Hitler gets ousted and a Reform comes in: Every last one down to the lowest bobby who is arresting people for facebook posts get barred from ever participating in British politics ever again and are ousted from holding any public sector position. That would be a more measured response to what has happened the last eight months.

>6th strongest economy and military in a world of 200
The vast majority of those 200 are unable to feed or house even most of their own population and routinely suffer catastrophic war and famine. That's not a high bar to clear, and it's such a low bar that even the top 5 can't feed or clothe everyone.

The truth is being the best in a competition of which country is the most economically productive is pointless if most of your country is oppressed and miserable. Which the UK now gets to boldly claim they're standing among Iran, Russia, North Korea, Afghanistan with how they're having to restrict the internet to keep their dictators in power. Each one of those countries can also make a bold claim about how powerful they are as well when no one else is allowed to speak.
