Well which is it? I need one of these PCs I am tired of my desktop, and my laptop, and my tablet, and my phone, and my ereader, and my kindle, and my ps5, and my home server.

I NEED a handheld PC
>>
You're at one of the worst times to buy one imo. I honestly believe the steam deck is the best one but now especially with the switch 2 (garbage) being out is too old and expensive. If you like nintendo games get the switch 2 if not hold.
>>
Legion go 2
It's the only non 'eck with oled and trackpads
Once 'eck deux oled is out it's that
>>
>>106741973
steamdeck 2
if you don't have one yet, you can't afford it
>>
>>106742026
I agree with you on the eck but I can't justify that fucking price when the specs are not that much better than the eck.
Honestly OP get one of those controllers that clip on your phone and run moonlight/stream through steam from one of your other rigs since you were kind enough to mention it
>>
After some research it seems the only options are ROG Ally X or MSI Claw 8 AI. Steam deck is too old, the others have poor software. I'd like that MSI one but the reddit is full of people returning or selling theirs because the hardware is good but the software is so unbelievably shit.
>>
>>106742294
>I'd like that MSI one but the reddit is full of people returning or selling theirs because the hardware is good but the software is so unbelievably shit.
bazzite nigga
>>
>>106742471
Bazzite? Something else to research I guess. And now I've seen there's also some xbox version of the Ally X out this week? Oh boy, this isn't gonna be simple. I hope there's black friday sales on whatever one I pick.
>>
>>106742471
He should just wait, the price is garbage right now, Trust me OP just get a phone controller and stream your game through moonlight it will feel like native in your home network. If you are traveling often I would understand but for now it's just not worth it.
>>
'eck if you play shooters in any capacity and do not want to hook up KB+M since it's the only handheld with proper input to make shooters halfway enjoyable (gyro+flick stick/trackpads that is natively supported by Steam Input) while other handhelds only include the gyroscope as an afterthought and checkbox on the packaging with dog shit driver support.
Legion Go detachable thingy looks innovative at first but requires a surface to work and at that point you might as well use Bluetooth KB+M. Raw hardware power is nowhere near as important as UX once you realize you can just grab it and play during lunch break or on your bed without hooking up your other peripherals.
The biggest problem is games that don't run on Linux but I either use it to filter out bullshit (almost all of which are competitive pvp slops) or use remote play.
Also price.
>>
>>106742045
Do any of those clip on controllers support usb-c passthrough for charging AND data?
I want to hookup a usb-c dock that has an ethernet port for lower latency. I looked at 8bitdo and gamesir controllers but no one talks about data passthrough.
>>
>>106741973
GPD Win 4 or Mini
>>
>>106742605
I don't see many listings but on a local network with moonlight it shouldn't notice it at all. Look up moonlight it's a good program many people say it feels like native on their local networks. If you want the steamdeck on sale you can only get up to 60fps on a screen with horrible ghosting and if you want oled you're honestly getting into scam tier because the performance is not much better and you're paying more for a screen with a lifespan (They made the device repairable with full documentation but still)
>>
>>106742634
Yeah I already have a great PC so I'd rather stream games to my tablet than get a deck. I've used steam direct play before and it's alright, from what I'm reading moonlight is lower latency.
My concern is I'm moving to a new place soon with questionable wifi since it's a granny flat off to the side sharing the same router as the owners. I'm planning on running an ethernet line to the apartment with a managed switch already, maybe I can add my own WAP too.
>>
>>106742722
Should be easy you can just run your personal WAP through their router.
>>
What do you people think about the new rog xbox ally and the x version? I am sitting on the cheapest steam deck and thinking about upgrading.

As a degenerate gamer who somehow got into a gradschool:
I have a retroid pocket 5
it plays PS1 games like a champ
I don't like the form factor of handhelds
Might as well just but a telescopic gamepad and put your phone in it and game like that
I just don't see the usecase for em. I already have to lug either a gaming laptop or mini PC + portable monitor.
The real revolution will come when I have the power of a desktop in the form factor of a smartphone and I can just plug it into a docking station and have all my peripherals running off a 5v usb-c port.
>>
>>106741973
Whichever one has the best price/performance while being affordable to you specifically. Statistically that'll be Steam Deck or Steam Deck OLED.
>>
>>106741973
Steam Deck is still the best all-arounder and if you have the patience I can't see the Deck 2 as being anything less than godly. The entry model is also on sale right now if money matters. If you want something more powerful over ergonomics or controls, then it becomes a harder choice, but I would still install SteamOS on it or go for one of the ones that has it by default so you're not paying the $100 Windows tax.
>>106742014
>If you like nintendo games get the switch 2 if not hold.
Disagree. Under no circumstances is the Switch 2 currently worth more than a liquidy pile of shit even if someone does like Nintendo games. It's Deck specs and all handheld PCs annihilate it off of sheer capability. They're better Nintendo devices than Nintendo's own devices on top of being so much more.
>>
>>106745501
Steam Deck 2 won't even start production in the next 3 years.

I have an ally x, wife has a steamdeck, and my daughter has a Lenovo legion go s.
Best all rounder is unironically the steamdeck. Best ergonomics hands down and is good enough to play all games unless you're a spergy zoomer faggot who needs 4k graphics.
Best specs all around would be the ally x. Though the Xbox ally x probably corrected the previous gens ergonomics. Performance wise the Xbox x and the ally x are not that much different. Save your money. Downer though os lack of the touchpads.
After getting used to the touchpads on the steamdeck in games that don't have controller support, it is unironically the killer feature of the SD. I bought a steam controller just to have the experience on my ally.
> Honorable mention
Legion go s isn't bad. Good ergonomics and has a shitty track pad but it's shitty. Almost an after thought waste of time. Maybe the legion go 2 will correct upon it.
> OSes
Stick to steam OS or catchy os (arch based) which runs the steamOS game mode perfectly.
Bazzite is OK but can be jenky at times.
> Windows
Meh but the new game mode looks interesting. Might change things up a bit.
>>
>>106745501
>>106745545
> Switch 2
Agreed, don't waste money on a switch 2. People ask my why I didn't get my kid a switch.
Why would I waste money on a shitty walled garden when I can emulate the entire Nintendo library for free and play a massive fucking PC collection?
It'll be a year at most before we get switch 2 emulation but nintendo can suck a bag of jap micro dicks.
>>
>>106745545
Bazzite isn't as good on handhelds as it is on desktops. And I'd definitely not run CachyOS on a device which shouldn't require any maintenance, like a handheld. Both SteamOS and even Bazzite are much better options.
>>
>>106745702
True, honestly the best all around option for people when it comes to mobile handheld OSes is steamOS. All the benefits of arch and largely maitanance free.
The only reason I recommend CachyOS here is because it narrowly beats out steamOS in performance by like 1-2% and its nice to have access to a full distro without dealing with the immutable stuff. I'd expect a poster here to have the chops to keep it going which will allow them to reap the benefits.
> Bazzite
Man you're right. I'm running it on my laptop and yeah it's stellar. When I had it on my ally x it was OK but definitely not as good as cachy or even steamOS.
But yeah , for the "just works" crowd" stick to steam OS for the balance of performance and effort free maitanance.

>another one
why are there so many wtf they all use the same chips
>>
>>106741973
Steamdeck gets you the most power for price.

You see its not the most powerful but the reason its so cheap for the components it uses is because Steam makes a fuck ton on game sales for each device so they can afford to sell it for extremely cheap.

Other manufacturers dont have that luxary, and thats why most decent ha dheld gaming pcs are over 1k. They have to sell over the hardware production cost to make a profit.
>>
>>106746448
>they all use the same chips
There's always 1-3 chips which are "the best" for the next year or two (considering price/performance, performance/watt and general availability). The handheld manufacturers are targeting similar audiences, so you'll see the same chips. Valve's Steam Deck was an exception because they directly partnered with AMD for a custom chip.
Usually the difference will be the ootb software experience, physical layout of I/O devices, the screen and overall build quality.
>>
If you don't actually care about PC games and just want to emulate or stream a PC to your handheld, I'd say the odin 2 is good and it's only a little bigger than a switch lite, so it's actually comfortable to use for long periods of time

Aside from default apps and out-of-box support for gamepad buttons, what am I missing by not using immutable gaming distros like SteamOS or Bazzite? SteamOS is too locked down and I regularly run into booting bugs with Bazzite.

These things are basically just laptop hardware, right? Is there any reason not to use Ubuntu or regular Arch?

It's difficult finding info on this. The community around these devices is retarded and frequently thinks every OS besides Windows is a "SteamOS" and that both hardware and software are built from the ground up to compete with the Steamdeck.

Using a GPD Win 4 with Win11 LTSC right now and it's a very nice experience.
>>
Steam Deck still BTFO everyone else due to lower price.
>>
ROG Ally Z1X here, love it. Shits awesome, plays everything I want to and feels good in the hands.

Only thing that sucks is the SD card readers quit on them, so maybe get the newer one I hear it's fixed now on the Ally X. If you get a Z1X get the upgraded battery for it on ebay
>>
>>106747602

My Z1X does this very well, can play everything up to PS2 with no issues, and you don't even need the X you can do that with the regular Z1. The Z1X lets me do modern shit like Warframe and Helldivers 2 if I want though.

That kinda looks like a Nintendo DS. It would be nice if some android games supported the dual screen feature.

I like the retropocket classic 6 SG. Its oled and sega button layout. The lack of analog sticks make this one a dedicated retro handheld.

it's a shame that it's too weak to properly emulate Saturn games tho
>>
>>106748537
switch 2 is $600. the trend is towards more expensive.
>>
>>106748537
It might be longer, Valve have stated this year they won't until chips improve and Z2 Extreme was not enough of a step up according to them, which may be true. Strix Halo is certainly a step up but they aren't going to be shoving that into anything any time soon either, I can't see anything happening next year unless they have their own uber custom APU, they might but AMD are charging everyone out the ass for these high end APUs. I think the next deck will be very powerful I remember reading an interview after the original launched where Gabe said he was surprised the most expensive deck was the bestselling one, by a lot.
>>
>>106748598
We're probably going to end up with a switch 2. We use our switch ones often.
>>
>>106748613
Then they need to either upgrade the LCD screen to a higher refresh rate/better response time or put the OLED model on a steeper sale

>>

so which one?
>>
>>106741973
A full ATX tower dyel?
>>
It probably is gonna be that new ally xbox x or the msi claw

both are like $900 that's as much as I'm willing to spend
>>
>>106747660
>These things are basically just laptop hardware, right? Is there any reason not to use Ubuntu or regular Arch?
No and they're basically laptops in a handheld gaming form factor.
The only reason you'd want to use Bazzite or steamOS is because you want to take advantage of the steam game mode which is arguably one of the best UX experiences for gaming. Though you can get the same experience with big picture mode.
As for other distros, you may want to check out Cachy OS (arch) or Nobara (fedora). Both aren't immutable. Cachy arguably is the best because of its optimizations but you'll need to be comfy with configurations which it sounds like you are.
>>106747985
It'll be the fastest but the battery situation is utter dog shit. There aren't a lot of options for power with these because the chips are only marginally getting more efficient and battery tech hasn't improved. The win 5 is the result of that.
>>
>>106742014
>Nintendies shilling
LOL

>>106741973
>I NEED a handheld PC
I kinda want one to, however I'm waiting for Valve to release the Steam Deck 3 which will probably boil down to being the same exact thing but with more ram or a better APU or perhaps a 120hrz display even which I'm fine with.
But maybe I'll just get the cheap LCD in the meanwhile since that's on sale.

I assume that's some Rocket Qualcomm or Samsung ARM thing right? Anyway I always wondered how easy it is to install your a new Android OS like Lineage or Graphine on it if theirs ever stops receiving updates.
I also like the idea of an actually pocketable gaming device but I'm wary it might become e-waste if it's locked down or even if it's not but also doesn't have a retard proof way of NOT bricking it.

>The real revolution will come when I have the power of a desktop in the form factor of a smartphone and I can just plug it into a docking station and have all my peripherals running off a 5v usb-c port.
Doesn't some Chinese OS already do that? I forget if it's ZTE or Huawei that does that, CCP spyware aside.
>>
>>106751492
Where did I shill Nintendo?
You shouldn't buy Nintendo out of principle with the shit they pulled. Devices like the eck invalidate the switch but the problem is the eck is long in the tooth and still too expensive for the oled model. If the LCD model that's currently on sale didn't have a shit tier screen I would fully recommend it.
