Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experienceâ„¢

Good idea! This also makes space for the usual "by posting in this thread you denounce anime" which has been missing for a while.

im about to get T480 16gb tommorow for the first time in my life to use thinkpad
i dont know what to replace first
so i ordered 870 evo 1tb and ax210 wifi card
is it good?

then what to do next life something update the bios or firmware or something??
guide me sir
>>
>>106745645
>so i ordered 870 evo 1tb
I hope you checked whether it has the SATA or M.2 cable first and ordered the right drive for it
>ax210 wifi card
nice
>something update the bios or firmware or something
First thing to do with most 2017-2019 Intel 'pads is update the Thunderbolt firmware. If it's below version 20 the controller will slowly kill its flash chip making the port useless, and in this model, preventing the laptop from charging at all.
>>
To all those niggercattle that helped push Thinkpads to stratospheric prices in my shithole, I hate you soooo much. Charging $200+, for T480 with 250 nits panel, in the year of our Lord 2018+7 is criminal.
>>
>>106688485
turns out it kind of was a scam
got the thing today and it is ddr3 instead of ddr4 and the guy stole the damn sata cable
atleast its still an i5-6200u
cant really complain for $30
>>
>>106745728
>I hope you checked whether it has the SATA or M.2 cable first and ordered the right drive for it

I dont understand this
It comes with ssd sata 256gb from previous owner

>Thunderbolt firmware
How to update that is there a tutorial

usually you use lenovo commercial vantage and press updoot.
If you're a Linuxfag, too bad. Dual boot Windows and do it once.
>>
>>106746186
Is there anything to do after that? Its all set? Bios update? Etc?

my x260 is about to eat shit and die, which T series has the best performance:battery life ratio?

>Lenovo Thinkpad T, X and W/P Series
>all have backdoored Intel CPU

Why is Thinkpad so cherished among programmers and /cyb/fags? I'm looking for a laptop to buy, and I was thinking about Thinkpad. But I thought the major problem with other laptop brands was privacy related. And the hardware is not open source and known for having backdoors, so...why? If it's okay to use Intel processors for /sec/ purposes, why not just use any commercial laptop for that matter? I mean, the reasons of "Why ThinkPad?" are there, but isn't this a bit superficial? This is a genuine question. I think they're pretty cool, but I want to make sure I'm not exchanging six for half-a-dozen.
>>
>>106747619
Many of them can run coreboot and have the ME mostly disabled (in the newer ones in the same way that burger 3-letter agencies disable it). My only reason for buying TP is the nipple though.
>>
>>106745425
Where can i find a replacement battery for my x230? Are kingsener still around and which ones are the real ones because theres like a billion fakes on aliexpress.
>>
>>106747619
Its the classic keyboard and the nipple mouse. Even the newer shitty chicklet keyboards are not bad but the layout is much worse.

Yeah, ThinkPads are comfy AF. There are some cool open source hardware projects going on lately like MNT Reform, worth to check it out.

Just gone back from my t480 with a nice 1080p IPS screen and SSD to X230 with 1366 TN panel and HDD - holy shit this screen is horrible, and HDDs are so slow. Not sure the x230 has many redeeming features other than a slightly better keyboard and some of the function keys desu senpai

have a t450 and an ant infestation in my room has found its way inside my laptop. going to have to take it apart to get those fuckers out of there, any cool mods or fun shit i can do while it's apart?

was considering getting a metal chasis printed with a clear panel on the bottom for future ease of access and durability. I've had this shit for about 5 years know, looking to get the most out of it
>>
is it that big of an ask to want a t480 with 16gbs of ram and atleast 256gbs of storage under €230~

am i ASKING too much why is it so hard

> Just gone back from my t480 with a nice 1080p IPS screen
That better not be the default 250 nits version. Because all that you've believed in these past years will be shaken to its core.

Hi. Figured this would be a good place to ask, though it's technically not a thinkpad;

I managed to score myself an old Lenovo B490 for fairly cheap. Having trouble finding info on how to get it to have some better parts though.
Is there anything like the screen upgrades you'd see on a T-series for this? Processor ones too, if any of you know.

Thanks in advance if anyone here knows. Kind of trying to make this into a little project to get better at stuff.
>>
>>106750600
how can I tell if I habe 250 nits
>>
>>106754423
If you have the default 1080p panel, it's almost always the 250 nits variety.
>>
>>106750567
Can't you buy one with less (but with a good CPU and screen) and upgrade it later? 8 GB of DDR4 costs about 10€ used, 256 GB SATA 10€ too, and 256 GB for the WWAN slot about 20€

>>106751967
>screen upgrades
Unlikely
>Processor ones too
35 W quad-core e.g. 3632QM should be fine if it's the Ivy Bridge version of the board
>>
I'm looking to replace my trusty Latitude E5430 for around 2500 Polandcoins
>15,6 inches, might consider bigger
>color accurate 120Hz or more screen
>not loud(doesn't need to be fanless, just not loud)
>2 SSD slots would be a plus but not required
doesn't need to have lots of power, it'll be used for graphic design and playing rhythm games
any recommendations?
>>
I got a t480 in favor of a t470 you recommended
It has an HDMI output, but I want to connect 2 displays
Is a dock the only solution?
>>
>>106755329
You won't get 120 Hz in a ThinkPad for that money. P53/P15 mostly check your other boxes but need some tweaking to be quiet.

>>106755401
Could connect a new enough display directly to the Thunderbolt port
>>
>>106746258
lenovo vantage covers bios update as well, so yes, you're done.
>>
I have a t480 with mint on it what else should I do
