>>106762693how retarded do you have to be to spend anything over 1500$ for a handheld over a desktop
>>106762753can't buy a better desktop for $1500
>>106762770the 8060S has the same performance as the 3060 if you're lucky https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KfMqt3literally built this in 3 minutes for 900$ with the same performance and better because desktopgive it a 4060 or be smart and go with amd, give it more storage and small upgrades and you reach your 1500$ for a desktop that it's going to be a lot better than it, or keep the money and just buy the first one and then a steam desk and use moonlight
>>106762770You certainly can; the $1500 version of this handheld has an 8 core Ryzen, 32 GB of RAM, and 1 TB storage - a similar desktop with a Ryzen 9700x + 9060xt 16 GB comes in at like $1,100 and will be faster at almost everything. (Only place where handheld would win would be AI models that are larger than 16 GB, but still small enough to fit into that total 32 shared memory. A handheld like this only makes sense if you travel a lot.
THE POWER OF THE SUNIN THE PALM OF MY HANDOH NO NO NO NO NO
>Dropped the keyboardNo. I'll just stick with the Steam Deck.
>>106762909HAHAHAHAHAHA
>>106762693I would buy one if it were in the original clamshell format. I remember seeing the original GPD win about 8 years ago and being totally amazed at some chinese guy playing WoW on it.
jfc you can't even plug regular chargers into it, they'll crash if you try the wrong ones
>>106762753Yeah exactly. Why the fuck would you buy a cordless power drill when my drill press will run circles around one? Fucking idiots.
>>106762693>$2000>no oledno thanks
>>106762753its a portability tax
>>106762693The best handheld is still a Steam Deck.Chasing perfornance without being backed by decent battery life is meaningless.
>>106762693>no sliding keyboardFeels like a design downgrade from the Win 4.
>>106763064I bought the OG gpd win 1 back in 2017, very cool device.I also played wow on it, but mostly used it to shitpost from the toiletwas forced to remove win 10 in favor of linux (arch btw) due to the extremely small built-in storage (only 50-something GB!)I love gpd, they make cool devices and doesnt afraid of anything.bought the pocket 3 a year ago, will buy a gpd win mini when my OG win breaksthanks for reading my blog postchina #1Posted from my GPD WIN 1
>>106762693absolutely sick id love one with a oled and 128gb ram>>106762753these mog laptops and can be docked
>>106762909lol i cant wait for some insane nerds to make some crazy cooling solutions for this like they do with high end phones
>>106762693>This or a laptop?Definitely not a gaming laptop but I'd get an ultrabook first and if there's money left over consider a handheld.$1500 is insane though I wouldn't pay more than $700 for a toy like that.
>>106762909Imagine the noise.
>>106762753The only downside to this is the fact that It needs that massive external battery in order to last longer than 30 minutes. The win 4 is better.>>106763064I had a gpd win 1. Fun device and started this whole thing. They still make that format. It's called the gpd win max. I think it's up to 3 or 4 now. Either way it's better than this because it doesn't have that massive add on battery. The downside with gpd is their God awful support. You buy these things knowing if the device is defective you are shit out of luck getting it warrantied or replaced. I almost bought the win 4 refresh but opted on an ally x because of the support for it. Glad I did because it's a solid gaming device.
>>106764094the gpd win max is much bigger thoughgpd win mini is closer to the original gpd win in size
>>106763124This.>>106762693>IPS LCDmassive ick. Imagine spending so much, only to get dull, non-vibrant imagery, backlight bleed and greyish tint.
>>106762693the gpdwin4 gets the ryzen upgrade and you still get to keep the keyboard... why the fuck buy the uglier shittier gpdwin5?I swear I'll buy one when I get a chance... https://www.youtube.com/shorts/gAuGo2QE5a0?feature=shareI have a 1st gen win4 the battery bloated but still runs like a champ and still holds a charge, It's impressive given I played hours of fallguys whit my frens when I was homeless and living out of my van lel, even had a stand, portable lcd screen and mouse & keyboard.
>>106762693Laptop for me every single time. Had a steam deck, that thing was so slow and bulky and designed for big hands that I just gave it to a friend. I'd rather have a keyboard that I'll be using anyway, and an SN30 Pro will mog basically any controls any of these have if I need a gamepad.
It pisses me off that instead of doing something like this they took out the battery and keyboard, now it looks gay.You could have done this you stupid chinks... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kRiYIwdmN0
>>106763109>Yeah exactly. Why the fuck would you buy a cordless power drill when my drill press will run circles around one? Fucking idiotsAh yes your Drill press that requires constant power to run and isn't portable at all you sound like you have covid brain maybe you should get vaccinated again and then shut the fuck up
>>106762770>can't buy a better desktop for $1500you can if you're only gaming, the AI Max 395 is a workstation CPUIt's great if you need a lot of VRAM (mine arrived earlier this week and I've been loving it so far) and 16 cores, but gamers don't need 32-96 GB VRAM or 16 cores>>106762860it's about as strong as a 4060 (desktop)/4070 (laptop)
>>106762770My desktp has 1 TB of nvme, 650w psu, r5 1600x and RTX A4000, it would shit all over this thing. I game at 4k for what? I paid 200 for the whole pc + GPU was 300 Euro from some dell prebuild that died. That's 500 euro and it's so much better.
>>106762693minisforum ms-a1 with a ryzen 9 9950x3d or a 9900 and an egpu for the same price.
>>106769219>buy an egpu!retard. stop posting this horrible advice.
>>106768587>the AI Max 395 is a workstation CPUIt is absolutely nothing of the sort. No default ECC memory, paltry IGP compared to a true workstation GPU, made for laptops first and foremost in BGA only package. It is exactly as the name implies. It is a Halo product line meant to top mobile benches. Thats it.
>>106762909Good god
>>106762693Seems ridiculous if these are for gaming vs a steam deck. Before that the GPDs were the only option, now you can get a refurb deck for £250. The choice is obvious.
>>106762693Just but a fucking steam deck. What's wrong with you?
Why would anyone looking at buying one of these buy a steam deck instead?
That ASUS ROG tablet with a 395+ came out at the start of the year, basically same specs or better, 13'' screen. Only reason to get this is if you want the handheld console form factor with joysticks and shit.
If it comes with something like 96gb of ram and a nice bios then it would be a nice portable device but I feel that anything with a battery eventually turns into ewaste, lithium batteries are only good for about 4-5 years
>>106762693>Breaks after 2 Months usage.Yeh support and build quality is gonna be a fun one on this KEK.
>>106769422I have it and it's insane. You can play games on at 45-50w with high fps and it doesn't turn into a fucking jetengine or run at 100C. If you limit to 5w tdp you'll get 10hr out of it (more than enough for videos or light work). It's about $1000 more expensive than it should be and for $3k you can build a desktop that obliterates it in performance, but its not going to be portable or use barely any power.
Just get a steam deck?
>>106770411>5w tdpIs it actually usable for this much? Wtf.
>>106770521Strix Halo is a beast, it's just not in many devices and every device it's in is crazy expensive
>>106770532I'm kinda interested in its CPU performance, too bad all benchmarks are fucking shitI've been tempted to get a 395+ laptop for work and compiling on-device (without having to ssh to a build server or wait 30-60 seconds for an incremental build) but like you said they're very expensive, and a lot of it is from the GPUSpeaking of, where the fuck are the CPU cores in this dieshot
>>106770521I got 30fps in some ps3/4 era 3D games at 5w, this guy is getting 60fps at minimum tdp in celeste:https://youtu.be/yiHr8CQRZi4?t=327The real pro move with this device though is to get a portable usb-c charger + adapter (asus doesn't support battery pass through if you charge via usb-c from what I see) and then set the tdp to something reasonable, so you can take a tiny charger with you and use the device. I'm doing this next, tired of taking the big oem charger it came with.
>>106770561I mainly got mine for local AI / running msvc / ninja / cmake on a giant codebase. So far it doesn't disappoint at all and I'm getting desktop level performance. If you don't give a shit about energy efficiency / portability / ai I wouldn't recommend a strix halo chip, 9955HX3D is going to be faster (but you'll be tethered to an outlet at all times because no battery).
>>106769271Buying a gpd over an ms-as1 on a ryzen 9 and a egpu dock for your graphics card is terrible advice. He's better off with a minisforum ms-as1 and a 4k monitor for the same price.
>>106770652advising someone to buy an egpu is horrible advice. just build a pc at that point.
>>106770608>9955HX3DYeah it's an interesting tradeoff. I mostly have outlets but sometimes it's nice to be able to work in a plane or outside, and also to be able to use it in bed or on a couch without it burning up.Really my main issue is the lack of decent devices at reasonable prices with these chips. The 9955HX3D in particular suffers from being pigeonholed as a gaming chip and always bundled with a massive GPU that I don't need and will probably just cause driver issues because 99% of the time it's nvidia.
>>106770735He doesn't have the budget for it. He can just save his egpu for when he has the money to buy a real mother board and pc case. He's only going to suffer 10% gpu performance with occulink and that will go back to 0% when he gets the money for a real pc. Minisforum MS-A1 with a 9950 or an x3d and an egpu is about $1200. It leaves enough for a 4k monitor. Better than that GPD pocket bullshit. Best of all, he can take that same processor and gpu and put it on a real pc when he gets more money and resell or turn that minisforum into a media server with a $150 amd processor later in the future too.
>>106762693recycling 22y old PSP desing, lmao
a handheld is more more useful than a mini pc
this is just impatience. people need to wait for sub-nm nodes to produce better performing mobile GPUs. this shit is not meant to be in a handheld form factor, and nothing with this much power will be until efficiency is achieved. the architecture requires far too much wattage. this shit doesn't even have a fucking internal battery because of the massive cooling system it needs to not light itself on fire.
>>106771372those are gonna cost even more prices don't go down any more
>>106771372prices are going up due to inflation / tariff bullshit. It's one of the first times in recent tech history where people who buy first actually get a better deal (sony / xbox / nintendo all raised their prices, cameras costing more now). I agree with you this chip in particular is too power hungry to be used in a handheld, but in ultra mobile devices like the z13 and (hopefully) other laptops soon its a good idea.
>>106771428It is a good idea but AMD refuses to make more of them
Being an 'eck owner I'll say thisI don't know how you people can play even weaker AAA games on a screen that small. I'm finding trouble with games that run perfectly on this piece of hardware but are clearly made to be enjoyed on a normal ass decent screen. If something I'd say half of these games are only really enjoyable on TVs, not fucking tablets. I tried sunshine + moonlight for games that only run well on my PC, thinking that it'd suck because of input lag, and the input lag is no trouble at all, it's that games are not being designed for low resolutions anymore. Even if they run at 500 fucking FPS maxed out, the UIs are just not made for it.
>>106770990or you can just build a pc and use the igpu and buy the dgpu later and experience no performance loss.
>>106771818they aren't they play with these things docked 90% of people do this with these thingsall of these handheld devices spend maybe 1-2 months being used as couch handhelds, then they are either docked, sold or gathering dust
>>106762693>ctrl + f>psp>one resultgrim
>>106771997I GOT YOUR PSP
AND YOUR PSVITA
>>106772035oh fucking hell. yeah the psp was kinda small and portable. it could have been a bit bigger or maybe have had a small and normal version. but this is just too much.
AND YOUR MAID COMPUTER
>>106762693Why do they keep doing this...
>>106772904what exactly is the problem? does your thumb not reach the left stick or smth?
>>106762693I’m a little curious about why they went with the AI max 395, doesn’t the 390 have almost identical performance while consuming significantly less power? The lower tier AI max chips seem really good for handhelds, though.
>>106772922It's provably a bad design. If the thumbstick is good at the top then both should be at the top. If the thumbstick is good at the bottom then both should be at the bottom.Putting one up and one down guarantees that one of them will be wrongly placed.
>>106772944How is it wrongly placed if I can reach both perfectly fine and don't feel uncomfortable? How does that work? I like symmetry, but the human body isn't symmetrical.
>>106772976>the human body isn't symmetrical.like, what, the heart and a couple of other organs lmao
>>106773016your balls nig...>legs (one is dominant)>eyes (one is dominant)>testes (one is lower)>brain (two hemispheres)>heart (left side of the heart is stronger)>lungs (right one has three lobes)>arms & hands (one is dominant)>...
>>106772928Might just be an availability issue; AMD might not be making all that many Ai max 390s. The 395 uses two 8 core chiplets, the 390 uses two six core chiplets, made from defective 8 core chips. Since the chiplets are pretty small AMD probably doesn't have that many defective ones, and would only cut working chiplets if they were having trouble selling the higher end ones.
>>106771861You can't build a PC with an AMD Ryzen 9 9950x3D and a gpu for $1500. That's why the mini pc route is his best option.
>>106762860>no monitor>no mouse>no keyboard>no controller>no OSI get paid $60/h so include that for the 4 hours it would take to build that piece of shit in the price.
No waaaay.I saw concepts for this last year and they still didn't fix the button layout lmao
>>106762860>>106768903>it's about as strong as a 4060 (desktop)/4070 (laptop)For AI tasks it can outdo a 5090 since the GPU can address up to 96GB RAM.
>>106773814Strix Halo can only best a high tier 5000 series Nvidia GPU in some very specific workloads and only because it has the higher memory limit. Some LLMs with the right quant bullshit can run better because data locality, one giant pool of RAM. This isn't an across the board advantage though. For a lot of things the compute power disparity matters far too much, and it is a mind blowingly enormous disparity.Still fitting 16c/32t along with a mobile 4070 into a 120w package is insane for AMD.
>>106762693it's interesting that this even exists, but it's not a working idea. portable gaming systems must be small and inexpensive.
>>106774297A ton of these exist. There is more than enough interest and sales to keep companies making them. Even at $1200 to $2000.
I don't understand this trend of chinkhelds going for these high-end APUs that aren't even aimed at gamingWhere the fuck is the efficient APU in a GPD Win 4 chassis?
>>106774379Funny enough Strix Halo ends up looking incredibly efficient when cTDP is set low and power limit is capped via OS level software tools. Pulling 30w it can produce double the frames of its competitors.
>>106762693Why there's not a single fucking laptop with this chip? All its the fucking handhelds. I fucking hate how AMD has forgotten about the laptop market. There's not a single all AMD laptop.
>>106774395Yeah but imagine how much more efficient it could be if it was an 8C/16T CPU and the freed up area and power getting allocated to a bigger GPU (at slightly lower clocks)
>>106774421There are a couple off the top of my head that were available directly on initial launchThey really want to move mainline Strix Point volume though
>>106769219I second this. Way better than that gpd win bs.
>>106769219>minisforum ms-a1>5200MHz SODIMMlol lmao
>>106774421HP ZbookAsus Zenbook S 16It's probably not common because pic related
>>106762693It's just a PSP but they don't make good games anymoreThe new Monster Hunters suck, Tekken sucks, no more good platformers and sandbox games a la Little Big Planet, no good rhythm gamesWhat's the point?
>>106774717>What's the point? The same point as the PSPEmulation
>>106773753That would be incorrect; you can build a 9950x3d machine + a 9060xt (which is faster in games than the 8060s the Ryzen Ai max 395 has integrated) for $1500. And the Strix Halo chips don't have 3d cache, so the 9950 non x3d would be a more comparable CPU, which would drop the price even more. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qVj4cxAlso note that the $1500 version of that handheld is using the Ryzen Ai 385; that version has only 8 cores (so fairly comparable to an underclocked 9700x) and the iGPU cut down to 32 CU vs the 40 in the 395. The handheld only makes sense to get if you do plan on regularly taking it out of the house to game on.
>>106772062I wish the 5 was still a Maid Computer. Removing the keyboard hurts.
>>106773126Being dominant doesn't mean it has a different shape you fucking retard
>>106762693The nerd in me likes this, but the adult in me makes me ask: Usecase? When you are at home, this is the least comfortable way to play games. When you are not at home, you gotta be a manchild or autist to play games in public.Who buys this?
>>106776404>When you are not at home, you gotta be a manchild or autist to play games in public.Dunno, I saw a father shamelessly playing on his MSI Claw while taking his children to a local clinic the other day. It's not really a big deal.
>>106776419How often do you do that though
>>106776471I'm not intending to buy one. I'm not made of money and Steam Deck isn't sold here.
>>106775137PLEASE be my wife. I have a spare Win 4 in case you need to use it...
>>106774421>>Why there's not a single fucking laptop with this chip?AMD is fundamentally still a retarded company
>>106776733It's because of Sony and Microsoft, Playstation and XBox.
>>106772944It depends on the game. If the game uses the dpad as just another set of face buttons, xbox layout is superior because then you can reach the dpad easily with your right thumb. Also better for any kind of action game that's primarily left stick+face buttons.
