can you survive with it?

64GB? not really possible, only Windows 7 would fit and you still get problem with RAM if you have 16GB or more (Windows likes to create a file the size of your RAM into HDD/SSD)

128GB? very uncomfortable but Windows 10 + RAM swaps do fit into it. And since no new Windows 10 release appears anymore, it wont update the whole OS by making first a copy of your old OS (requires 32GB of extra space altough exact numbers are hard to say)

256GB? we are getting close here, everything except a collection of STEAM games should fit unless your are a 3D modeler or something and requires hundreds of gigabytes for 3D Studio MAX prop files.

512GB? I think this is the sweet spot, for normal generalized computer usage with Windows 10. Generalized means a compromise being in between of a 3D modeler business user and a gamer at home.

Larger than 512GB cannot be considered "small capacity" SSD.

Would Linux be different from Windows 10 world in terms of size?

my laptop which i recently used for over a month every day i'm only using maybe 20G of space total, running linux

that's because linux is bare bones. do you even have a job?
>>

My new laptop has a 16GB emmc.
After installing Linux mint I had 4 GB of free space. The hardware is buggy so I had to go and buy a usb flash drive. Now it doesn't freeze every 5 minutes.
>>
>>106764904
how much space do you think is needed to run a web browser, email client, and office suite?
>>
My complete windows 10 install (with office and adobe suite and media players, direct x etc) is less than 20gb
>>
>>106764959
you must count in your hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys, both are 16GB if you have 16GB of RAM

on the other hand if you have 4GB of RAM (not possible today?) those files would be also 4GB
>>
>>106764886
bullshit, unless you are a normie that does nothing with his pc outside browsing internet, if you program most dependencies will download garbage and fill it in no time
>>
>>106765008
I don't need it, I run that whole install in ram also
>>
DEI coders and jeets have bloated the size of modern so much its infuriating
>>
You can but it's stupid because you need free space for wear leveling. You can run with a 64gb ssd but if it only has 10gb free it'll wear out fast and die

Linux suffers from bloating more than windows ironically

I installed a desktop environment. I think it was xfce and it downloaded a shitload of bloat, when I saw it installing python shitscripts I shut down the vm and deleted the image, it's shit
>>
>>106765259
what's your definition of bloat?
it's possible to run a distro with xfce and use less than 1GiB of storage
>>
>>106765346
You need a display server which takes up most space
>>
ReadyBoost
>>
>>106764861
The ideal srtup is HDD raid1 with a ssd cache on top through lvm-cache. Ssd should be an enterprise ssd since lvm-cache sucks with trim and for safety I would use write-through mode so if the ssd dies the data persists. This setup gives you the best reliability and price/performance in a home PC (only works on linux).
>>
>>106765062
most normies do nothing with their computer except browse the internet
if you give your grandma an antix installation with an icon to open a web browser and watch youtube she won't feel any difference
>>
>>106764861
Sounds naive but is there even any actual benefit of having nvme or ssd aside from being faster in pretty much everything? My laptop (2019 model) is equipped with 1tb nvme and 1tb hdd, the only thing that I put in my nvme is adobe software like photoshop and premier; I put the rest of my files in hdd, so right now I have like 700ish gb space in my nvme
>>
>>106765438
I mean it uses less power than an HDD but what do you think the point of storage is other than to load things
fuck swap
>>
>>106765438
It's painful to use a spinning drive. Using a USB flash drive is 10x faster than an old school HDD. You can run the benchmark yourself. If you use windows get CrystalDiskMark and on linux use Kdiskmark (NOT a kde app)
>>
1TiB SSD costs like $50 and it lasts way longer.
Even if you only use 100GB of it, it's better than a small one, because then your SSD is free to avoid write amplification.
>>
>>106765980
I don't have a Sata or Nvme slot. None whatsoever.

I've been meaning to find some low-capacity SSDs (NVME) to run a linux distro on it, because I realised I don't really need to keep half a terrabyte occupied with linux, since there aren't that huge software suites and games that I use with it. So I'd rather use a mid or big drive for docs.

But the problem is that you can't really find good quality 250GB or 125GB NVME SSD drives. You just can't because companies will put the cheapest controllers and cells on low-capacity drives, since it's implied that those who buy such drives are typically the poorest customers, who need a basic bitch SSD to run an OS.

And such most entry-level SSDs will have low TBW and durability, thus defeating the point of installing an OS on it. It's just not viable. Unless you accept that you'll have to run the risk of having that SSD die in 3 years, sometimes even faster. Such low-spec drives often die just a few months out of warranty.

So I can't recommend small SSD drives, as much as I'd want to, because they're very convenient to simply run an OS on them, commercial interest dictates that better drives are of higher capacity.

tech illiterate retard
>>
>>106766232
I don't want to use partitions, fucking retard. You think I missed such a simple detail
>>
>>106766235
I don't have any partitions either, try being less poor if $50 for a fast disk is too expensive for you.
>>
>>106766248
I have money to get NVME SSDs, I just don't see the point of keeping a whole terrabyte drive or half of that with a linux install. I don't plan on installing much more than basic shit. It's a waste. And I don't want to use partitions either.

So I'd like to have a good small-capacity drive for Linux and use the bigger ones for Windows and another for documents. But I realised no good 125 or 250GB drives can be found. Companies typically put shit hardware in those.

So I'll have to probably use partitions lol, which I dislike because it can get messy when reinstalling the OS from another partition, etc
>>
>>106766296
Ok tech illiterate retard, ever heard of TBW? In SSD, longetivity is tied to capacity. SSDs are designed to be half empty, fucking mouthbreather.
>>
Imagine running an os on an ssd, all those little logs constantly being written and eating away at your sdd's life lol
>>
>>106766418
2 years, 8TiB out of 560 written, fuck off poor nigger.
>>
>>106766444
Lol I have more ssds than you probably but I don't run my os on any of them l, don't run it from a hdd either
>>
>>106766458
Ya I'm sure your poor ass has more SSDs and that's why he's worried about something irrelevant.
Old one dies, I buy and put in a new one, kill yourself poor tranny.
>>
>>106766465
Lol I don't like my hardware dying which is why I'm not poor
>>
>>106766483
I never had a SSD die, even one I bought 10 years ago, kys poverty ridden nigger
>>
>>106766310
No they are not. They are designed to spread out the wear evenly, to prolongue the life of the drive.
And yes larger drives will have a higher TBW rating just because it compounds.
But often companies will put better controllers on the more expensive drives that happen to also have higher capacity.
>>
>>106766491
Where more expensive is $10 bigger price for x4 bigger drive, lmao.

A year ago I bought 2.5" SSD for my old laptop, which I keep as a spare.
Smallest one in the shop was 240GB CX2 for about $30 (wit hthen exchange rate).
Smallest SSD I've ever used was 160GB intel one; Came with used laptop I bought for $200.

So, moral of the story: just upgrsde, unless you have shit with EMMC, in which case I feel sad for you.

Wtf are you talking about.

Samsung Pro 990
1TB List Price: $127.99
2TB List Price: $199.99
4TB List Price: $374.99

Just an example. M2 SSDs are not really cheap and higher capacity are not just 10 bucks more. They're almost double the price
>>
>>106766698
$130 is cheap for M.2 I'm obviously talking about SATA since it's already fast enough.
