How viable are used phones for self-hosting?>built-in screen>built-in ups>power efficient>compact form factor>0 noise>reuse your old phoneJust why not?
You first need a static IP and then pray to not being DDoS by a n***** autist from 4cuckland like they did for altschans during the death of this shithole.
>AndroidInstall Termux and you could probably do anything you could do on a home server>iPhonelol
>>106765044there a better ways of getting arm. like the rasberry pi which will be better supported better cooled and not have a stupid screen or battery attached to it (plus can run of poe)
>>106765511why do I need to spend extra money if I already have my old phone?
I'm also thinking of something like this. I have a stack of old smartphones (with various defects) and since no one wants to buy them on craigslist, I was considering repurposing them into something like a security camera system since they all have cameras. they have built in wifi as well and they are old as shit so i don't even care if they are ruined by weather. I have cables long enough and realize that this solution is extremely shitty and ghetto but I'm kind of brainstorming and don't have many other good ideas for them
>>106765044>>106765121>>106765678>>106765069Because security is not given in your flimsy pleb solution.Android phones, while versatile and extendable, receive security updates for three years on average. They can be used for hosting as long as the Android system is up to date. After that, you're fucked.iPhones enjoy lifelong updates, but the system is so fucking limited, you can't do anything with it. So that's the problem. So you see, using your phone for anything that requires production level of security is a retarded idea.
>>106765044how to make them stay on 24/7 without the battery exploding?
i have a retroid pocket i dont play because the form factor sucks and i was thinking maybe that's a good thing to turn into a linux server for home assistant
>>106765678>and don't have many other good ideas for themtry and sell them for a while on ebay or some shit, then if not sold, just recycle them anon.
>>106765866your phone is on 24/7 and does it explode?
>>106765044Bangladeshi clickfarm type technology
>>106765044Perfectly viable, except for their dead batteries that will eventually catch fire and explode. Modern phones don't work plugged in without a battery
>>106766121>>106766041
>>106765044battery goes to shit. no direct power from cable. no cooling for max performance.
>>106766130I don't keep a 4 year old phone on the charger 24/7
>>106765044i do have 1 used android, currently using it atm. i'm thinking to make it an on demand local file and git server turned off when not in use.
As an alternative for rpi and the like? Sure, for an actual server? No
>>106765848>iPhoneLMAO
I have a few old phones set up to use Haven
>>106766121old batteries are less likely to ignite since they have much less energy
>>106765044>>0 noiseit'll be plenty noisy when one of the pillows inside goes boom
>>106767998No, they're more likely to ignite because they're old and worn. They create smaller fires by themselves, because they contain less energy, but if there's anything flammable nearby it's a great insurance payout for your house
>>106765044>all these useless headphone jacks polluting my planetdisgust
>>106765044>run termux>android kills your termux processyour server's down.
>>106765044Only if you can run postmarketos.Android kinda sucks for hosting, can't listen on ports <1024 without root, massive memory overhead thanks to jvm, io perf neutered by scoped storage.
>>106768935You'd probably port forward at the router, so it doesn't matter what the port on the device says. You can run native code, you only need java for ui shit. Same with scoped storage, only needed for accessing shared files.
>>106765121https://iconfactory.com/worldwideweb/
>>106765678People do buy defective phones to repair or just for parts on ebay fyi. I know a friend who tried to get into the hobby and now has a bag of phones. It wasn't a bad idea on his part, but some of the repairs(esp involving screens) are quite tricky. But there are people who can do them.
>>106766041I turn my phone off for several days when I return home and turn it back on before leaving the house again. Why would you leave a mobile telephone on 24/7? What possible use case could you have?
>>106765866>>106766041root it and write a script to cycle the battery from 40% to 60% or something
>>106765848Post ONE Android vulnerability for any phone manufactured in the last 8 years that would make hosting the basic kinds of web services a phone could handle untenable. ONE.
>>106774064dirty COW
>>106765609why do you need the approval of 4chan for your actions
>>106774158I said 8 years retard.
>>106766041Top lol
>>106774183pick up your trash you nigger
>>106774183I bet that seagull has a favourite flavor too
>>106765044I guess it depends on what you host but phones can handle something small with low traffic. Eventually you add more and more to your stack which means adding more single purpose phones. At some point you'll have a stack of 10+ phones all running one or two things and it's a nightmare to manage. Updates, reboots, bugs, glitches multiplied by 10 and with different symptoms and fixes for each. Then you decide to host it all on a single x86 machine and the maintenance overhead is way less.
>>106774223Thank you. I'm sick of these retards.Anyways Termux on Android all the way works amazing. I suggest sveltekit stack I built an awesome little NAS for myself works great and just push it to hostinger if you need the next step.
>>106766041thats not what makes it explode though, it's the 24/7 charging
>>106776821then state it in the beginning, duh
>>106768252>They create smaller fires by themselves, because they contain less energy,That's not how it works. The fire comes from the electrolyte, not the electrical energy. The energy is just what causes a thermal runaway hot enough to ignite the electrolyte, which becomes less likely the older and weaker the battery is.A battery becomes bloated for multiple reasons, and age is the least dangerous reason, while heat being the most dangerous.I am much more worried If I see a brand new battery bulging than an old one.
