I remember using that site in college.

The trick is to treat the whole thing like a ticket tracking service so you split a project up into little ticket-sized tasks and charge per task. The first ticket should always be documentation so everyone is on the same page.

Freelancing sucks ass though. I'm unemployed right now and am not even trying with that. One time on freelancer.com I worked for a month on this huge multithreaded networked filesystem and the guy *went to jail* before he could pay me.
