The 4.1 beta only happened because of serious threats of forking and the 4.1 release will only happen by renewed serious calls for forking.
Transmission is all but a dead project. Instead of letting the old maintainers bamboozle you with fake promises for future activity it's well past time to fork Transmission.

Transmission users, how do you use it on private trackers on which the latest versions are not whitelisted?
>>
>>106771456
than you are not in private trackers at all, also one anon has posted this link https://github.com/transmission/transmission/issues/7623 and i actually went through their renting and here is what some of the current devs who are working on that project has to say about new release. . .

The admins that have done so much great work to get this software to where it is today like @ckerr and @mikedld are unfortunately the same ones who have killed it. They refused to grant write access to some devs that made significant contributions to the project over the last few years and (were once) highly motivated in its success.

They erroneously feared the potential for malicious activity, and instead thought that having the project go nowhere and have everyone jump to other software was the better outcome.

also i am not some dude who think that everything should be upgraded to the latest versions, if software is working than it doesn't need any fixes but there are some devs who have different mentality such as "if it isn't broken, than fix it and fix it and fix it until its broke".

It's been banned from all private trackers for like a year. The devs don't have the manpower to push a new version quickly and though there are willing contributors the devs seem uninterested in getting them more involved.
Most of the replies in the threads are largely useless unless you want to risk getting permabanned by a private tracker. I would not be surprised if Transmission gets forked sometime soon, in fact it would probably be the best case scenario.
https://github.com/transmission/transmission/issues/7623

Also, on a sidenote, there's an annoying corner case you can run into that I never bothered reporting because devs are so absent and probably won't care. If you delete all trackers from a torrent (for example, if you want to remove an old tracker URL and add a new one) then it becomes impossible to search for it using the filters (because in the tracker filter dropdown, there's no way to filter for torrents that have no trackers). So, if you want to change tracker URLs you have to add new ones first before deleting old ones. Accidentally fucked this up and had to redownload all my active torrent files for an entire tracker.

Downgrade Transmission to 4.0.5-1 and downgrade miniupnpc to 2.2.6-1 (the latter may brake some software depending on it, I don't know).
It's really a shitty situation. The only reason I haven't bailed from transmission is because the devs keep stringing me along by claiming an update is right around the corner (they've been saying this for a year) and cause I don't know if trying to migrate my torrents to another client will fuck them all up or if other clients can even handle so many torrents (I have almost 6,000).
>>

I would think that a stable functional client is sufficient and they don't have to tinker with it all the time.

https://github.com/transmission/transmission/pull/7086
https://github.com/transmission/transmission/issues/7078
https://github.com/transmission/transmission/issues/7094
tl;dr:
>Transmission introduced a bug in Feb 2024 that landed in ver 4.0.6.
>This bug causes a race condition where the client will spam announce messages at the tracker despite the tracker responding with success messages. This causes Transmission to increase load on trackers and it led to it being banned on a bunch of them.
>In August of 2024 it was banned pretty much everywhere and a fix was developed. However, that fix only lives in github.
>A 4.0.7 release was in the works when the bug was fixed and the plan was that instead of releasing a new version with just the bug fix, they would instead wait until 4.0.7 which was allegedly right around the corner. A roadmap for 4.0.7 was created in September of last year.
>As the months dragged on, everyone abandoned the idea of releasing 4.0.7 in favor of pushing out the 4.1.0 release which they are now saying is right around the corner (and they've been saying this now for many months).

Also, many of the devs don't seem to understand how tracker whitelists work. They smugly explain that you can just compile it yourself with the bug fix and other such useless suggestions.
>>106778067
>Running software through WINE unnecessarily
How are there people this dumb?
>build it yourself
The issue is that it depends on an outdated library which you have to downgrade as well.
>>106777961
It's not that hard, see >>106776679 . It's far from ideal though and since other software like Dolphin, Godot, and Bitcoin depend on a newer version of miniupnpc then it might not be a feasible option for them.
>>
>>106784090
>honestly, what reason is there that torrent clients keep needing to be updated?
Open source software exists in an ecosystem. Libraries constantly get updated to increase performance, add features, and, most importantly, to fix security issues. Software that depends on those libraries has to get updated to use the new libraries, especially when there are security concerns. This is just the way things are with open source software, and especially with Linux. The whole "if it ain't broke don't fix it" approach to software is something that is only viable if you can ignore issues like the fact that new vulnerabilities get discovered in software all the time.
To put it succinctly, in the Linux ecosystem, if software depends on outdated libraries then it's considered a bug report that the developers need to address.
The issue here is that the ecosystem has moved on to a new version of the miniupnpc library (and all the other software that depends on that library have upgraded). and that the outdated 4.0.5 version of Transmission depends on the old version of the library. To downgrade Transmission you also have to downgrade that library and that means you also have to potentially downgrade other software that depends on that library (and any software depending on the newly downgraded software and so on). Linux is not like Wangblows where you have a ton of versions of the same library (some vulnerable and some buggy and so on) all side by side (win s-x-s), in Linux you only have one copy of each library on the system and the software links to it dynamically.
