I don't know if it's gotten better since I last checked but I haven't seen ads for new snapdragon laptops anymore and I suspect they'll just stop getting made and nobody will write Linux drivers for them as the platform becomes irrelevant. Probably better off trying to hack together a laptop-ish case for a Raspberry Pi.

It still required a ton of tinkering to get Debian on it but it works well enough. I bought nvidia memeputer and its arm64 running ubuntuFrom my entire experience of fiddling about with it for two months I suspect the main problem is that you'll be locked into a rare package distribution channel hosted by manufacturer's club. Like one third of stuff wont work because you'll run into a dependency that wasnt ported to arm64 because it is "depreciated" or whatever the soft language is for not enough people give a fuck.
I'm more impressed windows users can allegedly daily drive arm machines without problems. But something tells me my statement is not actual reality.

Anyway, I learned the reason to never buy NVidia hardware like that is because of what you mention. You're stuck on whatever kernel they give you, because nothing else will have gpu drivers. You're really never going to be able to say current with security patches and whatever. It also means all the edge compute stuff people are building out with these devices have gotta be horribly insecure after just a couple years time. No matter how good the hardware specs look, I stay away.
