It cost more. FireWire devices required quite a bit more smarts in them than contemporary USB peripherals, plus you had to pay $5 or so per device licensing fee to the IEEE 1394 mob.
And so it died once USB 2.0 became vaguely competitive for speed. t's that simple.

The only single use for Firewire was the same as Thunderbolt - it made the USB consortium get off its lazy ass and bump USB up to better speeds after years of constant stagnation.
