After reconsidering >>106771890, I think I grew to like my scratchy gritty and unlubed cherry reds and ancient costar stabs.
The whole keyboard has some heft which is nice.

I bought a junky royal kludge 60% once and overall hated how airy, echoey and plasticky the whole keyboard felt even with PBT caps.

Why? Brand new they're about $50, I could at least break even, right?
>>
>>106780991
consider
>cost of shipping - $10-15
>cost of ebay fees - $6.50
>opportunity cost your time - at least 90 minutes spent listing, packaging and dropping off the package, $22.50 at minimum wage

So your $50 - 18 = nets you $32, you'll be losing $15 doing what you suggested.

forgot to add, if you make your customer eat the shipping cost, you only just break even, not worth it.

for the price of an hhkb, you can get a full custom board with EC switches

look at the EC agar which is still in stock. also EC bauer lite just got announced to name a few
>>

I can just look for keyboards with EC switches, right? or should I learn about doing a custom

>>
>>106782262
building a custom is a pretty common next step after babies first keychron

I thought you were specifically looking to try topre and just wanted to point out that there are now electro-capacitive switches coming to customs and hhkb is so expensive that they’re comparable in price.

EC can be a little more involved than regular MX custom boards if it uses like dynacap stuff because the plate and PCB has to be sandwiched between all the parts like real topre but that agar uses naevies which encapsulate all the parts into a self contained MX footprint so the only difference between it and a regular MX custom as far as build process is concerned is that you have to put some standoffs between the PCB and plate so it’s a pretty simple build. That’s if you actually were after EC/topre stuff. It sounds more like you don’t know in which case I say just get something MX because the downside to those naevies is that like with HE and low profile switches, you are locking yourself to a very specific subset of switches.

How well does this feature actually work?
press=light=w+alt=walk
press=middle=w=run
press=full=w+shift=sprint

I thought maybe HE switch+software would work to throttle movement like an joystick does but if it requires separate keybinds hidden within the travel of the switch it won't have the granularity of throttle that a joystick or car accelerator has but 3 separate stages of movement. 0>1>2>3>4>5 vs 0>1>3>5
It would be something you have to workout for each game not only with the keybinds but if the game even separates walk/run/sprint in it's keybind menu.
....oh and it would only work for one key unless the game separates left/right/back walk/run/sprint.....

WASD = Left joy stick, that would make sense, the 4 sensors inside a controller joystick can translate into the 4 switches of the keyboard.
Is this done at the Keyboard software level or each game? I can see this leading to problems with the displayed M+KB vs controller button prompts in game.
I think this could be the grail for KB movement for me but I want to know how well this works and how easy it is to configure.

Don't know because I've never tried them, but you should discover pretty quickly whether they sound alright or not. 'Thematically' the combo works.

The bigger problem for your melodics is they're going on aluminum boards. In my experience that was not ideal. But since they're full-size maybe it'll be ok

I am looking for keyboard recommendations or any help to improve my search. I need advice about subjective matters such as reliability and known problems with models or manufacturers that I might not know already.

I currently own a Logitech G610 Orion-Red (mechanical MX red switches) for reference on what to expect compared to what I have now.

My budget is up to 200$. I need a keyboard from a brand/manufactuer with long term support and a real warranty. I am not interested in any of the Chinese fake "brands": OUEILA WEILOU UMAALA etc

Size/form factor

I am certain I need a Tenkeyless (TKL) size for gaming. I can certainly feel with my 100% keyboard that the numpad is taking up valuable space for mouse movements. I dislike more compact designs than TKL because they move keys around and would affect muscle memory against my work keyboard at the office which is 100% size.

Switches feel

I like linear feel switches and prefer them over the tactile red switches on my current G610 I currently own. I hate high pitch sounds from clicky switches.

Switch technology

This leads me to considering Hall Effect/Magnetic keyboards as they appear to be superior to mechanical for gaming. However I am wondering about the longevity of this technology, especially because of reports about switch cross-talk/key chatter issues. I want to keep my keyboard for longer than the 2 year warranty. Also unsure if it can be affected by interference or cause interference, as well as any health risks. How large are the magnetic fields from these switches?

Keycap material ABS-PBT

I have looked at PBT keyboards in person and I can't say I like the texture, or the fact this plastic contains phtalates. I feel ABS is fine for me, my G610 with ABS isn't worn at all after 7 years, actually it was the scroll wheel that broke.

cont.
>>
>>106791413
cont.

Connection type

I want a wired keyboard, no interest in anything wireless.

Aesthetics

I dislike anything looking like a light-up toy, I will most likely be turning off all the LEDs most of the time. I don't mind a basic look like the G610.

Wrist/palm rest

I need a palm rest, though I am wondering if I can get a better rest separately than one that comes with the keyboard.

Options

I have checked some reviews at RTINGS. I am closing in on Corsair K70 PRO TKL and the SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL (2023) among the ones they have tested. Is SteelSeries more/less reliable than Corsair? What are the risks with HE switches?
>>
>>106791413
>I have looked at PBT keyboards in person and I can't say I like the texture
The texture is not inherent to the material. It is applied by the mould. I very much doubt you would dislike the texture of good PBT keycaps like GMK MTNU, Hammerworks CRP, Keyreative PBS, etc.

>However I am wondering about the longevity of this technology
I don't hear a lot about them failing, but it's a relatively new design so you're taking a gamble. In theory, knowing how other hall effect switches have historically performed, the longevity should be very good. But who knows?

>How large are the magnetic fields from these switches?
My understanding is: very small. These are not large magnets.

>I need a palm rest, though I am wondering if I can get a better rest separately than one that comes with the keyboard.
It's easy to get a separate wrist rest, although not always cheap.

Some keyboards have a lower front height than others, which makes them less uncomfortable to use without a wrist rest.

>Is SteelSeries more/less reliable than Corsair?
I've heard lots of stories of Corsair keyboards lasting a good long time, although that could just be because the boards are more popular (about 3x as popular going by Google Trends). But you're asking about their new hall-effect boards. We don't know yet.
>>
>>106791413
one more thing:

>or the fact this plastic contains phtalates
ABS is undeniably softer than PBT and abrades over time, which is why it develops a shine. Brief searches suggest neither plastic necessarily contains phthalates, but if I were worried about such things wearing off and leaching into my skin I'd be more concerned about the keycaps that are visibly abrading with repeated contact. Most of the advantages of ABS are merely a matter of ease-of-production.
>>
>>106791596
Is a higher quality PBT cap going to be better than ABS for a HE switch? admitedly the one I tried was a HyperX Alloy Origins (linear Red), didn't seem like a high quality brand overall

Are there not any reports of key chatter on HE switches already? Is there nothing a consumer can do to amend it if the keyboard is out of warranty?
>>
I'm looking for an wireless, ortholinear "half keyboard" that is fully programmable.

For couch gaming it (+wireless mouse) would be enough for many games.
For watching Netflix it would be my TV remote (play/pause, navigating, volume).
For working I would use it as macro keypad while is use a full sized regular keyboard for typing.
Could act as a numpad for TKL keyboard, (and more for smaller KB).
If I get used to the ortholinear typing, I could get a second one and use both of them as a split keyboard. (Would be two devices, but I don't think that's an issue.

What to buy for this?
I don't want to solder, 3dprint, custom-pcb-order anything. But I would be willing to flash a micro controller with some firmware if that is what it takes.
>>
>>106791659
Given that key chatter is under normal circumstances caused by contact bounce it seems unlikely that this would ever be a problem with hall effect keyboards, since they do not operate by electrical contact. If you've heard otherwise I'd be curious to know where.
>>
>>106791659
>Are there not any reports of key chatter on HE switches already?
There shouldn't be, hall effect switches are immune to chatter by design. If anyone is getting double registers of keys it would be a software issue.
>>

Update:
Budget: 150€
Location: Germany/EU
Switch Type: clicky or tactile
Layout: does not apply, I want just a orthogonal grid, all square keys
Form factor: I think this would technically be 50% or less.
backlight: I don't care.

Theres not really anything out there that is readily available. Most wireless ortho macropads are 4x4 keys and may have some rotary encoders (probably too small) or wireless one handed keyboards will have enough keys but aren't ortho.

>>
so is there some kind of reference sheet or guide or youtube video or something that offers a pretty straight forward comparison of all these chink switches to something like cherry switches?

I'm in the market for a new keyboard and want to keep my cherry blues (or an equivalent) without having to spend a bunch of money or deal with stupid rgb gaymer shit from razer or corsair or logitech

every keyboard i can find has some weird type of switch i've never heard of and have no real reference point for them. all they do is throw charts and numbers at you and expect it to be worthwhile information with no info on the actual hardware inside the switch.

like does anyone know what a generic 'creme' switch is supposed to be?
>>
what is the easiest way to get hair out of switches? my gateron silent ink v1's are chattering because of hair, but i dont want to have to de solder the whole board and disassemble each key switch.

why did you get hair in your switches anon?
>>
>>106790281
>>106790733
ah hell nah
>>
>>106794599
because i am lazy and never clean my keyboard. the hair goes under the switch and then gets lodged in the top, and then over time it works its way into the bottom part of the switch and interferes with the metal prongs. or the switches are just dying, they are probably 6-7 years old at this point.
>>
>>106791413
very small magnets which are not right next to your fingers. doubt the magnetic field from those small pills do anything to health. humans would have known by now.
as far as reliability goes, the switches themselves are 100% mechanical, there's nothing electric in them. but there are hall effect sensors, as electronic chips, under the switch on the PCB. those may go bad as they are electronic chips, shit happens. it's up to the reliability of the components themselves. but LEDs also go bad. same as any other electronic component.
there's a newer magnetic technology, TMR (tunnel magneto-resistance or sum shit) which also requires a chip under the switch, and also a small magnet into the switch. these are supposedly higher resolution (10x vs hall effect) and lower power consumption (for battery reasons).
other than these there's another analog tech, inductive switches, which work by having a piece of metal in the switch going through a PCB integrated coil (made from copper traces). but even these require 4-5 larger chips on the PCB to scan groups of these coils, to detect the key press/position. same 10x higher resolution vs hall effect, but again...new tech and only Ducky makes them atm. and software is shit.
I myself will go for hall effect no doubt, it's just the superior choice tech wise.
>>
>>106794675 cont
ah ye with these analog switches software is extremely important so you can set all those crazy functionalities. so you're stuck with a handful of options. keychron/wooting and probably 1-2 others, depending on their software. QMK can't do the analogy bit atm, at least as far as I saw others discussing it

Well I have a second S100 on the way with PP plates so I will try it out on that first. It has zero excess room inside compared to the M5 which is big and roomy like a cathedral. Especially since my unit appears to have the same chassis they use for wireless M5Ws because there's a big empty recess in it that would fit a pair of batteries.

Ends up sounding tinny. Subjectively, too much metal. The dull thuds and echo of a roomy plastic case complement it better.

>>106795365
>What are my best options?
If you can dig the slightly unconventional colorway and don't mind living with costar stabilizers (you don't seem like a guy who fusses about his stabilizers), you can get this solid Filco with MX Browns for wicked cheap:
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/products/filco-majestouch-2sc

I came from a Daskeyboard with MX Browns, did the thing where you spend hundreds of dollars on meme switches etc, and decided I Iike MX Browns. I even like them stock. Up to you to decide whether you need to make all these same mistakes for yourself, but if you're happy with MX Browns I'd just buy another normal keyboard with mx browns and don't bother with all the sketchy China hotswap shit that dominates the hobbyist market these days.

Here's a video of a guy with a TKL version of the keyboard I linked, with mx reds. Sounds good to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC91V2UrMj0
