Bought one of these on sale.Upgrading the SSD to 1TB is about the same cost as just using a 1TB microSD card, is it worth the extra 30 minutes of work?
>>106800763I think a SSD would be healthier to play off of instead of a micro sd
>>106800847Depends on the gameI was in your position OP I decided to wait for the oled to go on sale.I can't cope with that shit tier screen even for 2D platformers that device is too expensive with it's age and screen.
>>106800763micmrosds have terrible latency, throughput and IOPS. I wont even comment on the reliability cause they're dog shit.
Considering how easy it is to replace yesI did it on the OLED and well, I can't say it's noticeable performance wise, but at least I don't have to worry much about storage.
>>106800763Yes it doesI bought SD-card and after a year read speeds reached HDD tier. I now only use microSD for smaller games
>>106800847You'd be surprised
>>106800763>>106800911>>106801069microsd should be only for roms
>>106800847>>106800875>>106800911>>106801069Thanks bros. So what I think I’m going to do is install the drive upgrade and then instead of an OEM dock, there’s a third party one that has its own M.2 slot. I’ll turn the OEM 256GB drive into a backup drive.
>>106800763MicroSD is fine for ROMs and hard-drive era games. But I wouldn't necessarily use it as a back-up SSD.
>>106800763>maid computer thread
>>106800763I personally didn't see much difference between the SSD and the micro SD card's performance and while I did replace the default 64gb SSD with a larger one I still have a 512gb micro SD card for smaller games as well. If the cost is the same I'd just install the 1tb SSD though.
>>106800763Even if your load speeds will suffer if you go the SD card route and it will potentially fail a lot sooner than a SSD because SD cards aren't really meant for constant read-right operations that occur when gaming. Your gains will still work from the SD card but you will have far better future proofing and reliability long-term if you suck it up and just install the SSD t. Upgraded my steam Deck SSD to 1 TB recently. Might upgrade it to 2 TB just for the hell of it.
>>106800847>>106800911>I think a SSD would be healthier to play off of instead of a micro sdCertainly but for low spec non competitive gaymin and VM's it's fine, they're both objects that get worn out over time and SD cards are a whole lot cheaper than SSD's especially if your fine with just anything in between 64GB's and 128GB's which companies are practically giving away for pennies, sometimes even for free. Just play shit that gets stored in the Valve cloud anyway and or pay a little more for a brand name that has a reputation for not acking itself immediately like Lexar, Sandisk, and Transcend.
>>106800763Buy a 1TB SSD for your Steam gamesShove a 1TB micro SD in there for emulated games
>>106801758I'd recommend a used SSD over brand new SD card. SD cards have much higher failure rate and their idle failure rate is so damn high that its worthless as a tech to me. Used SSDs are cheap as new SD cards and are 10X more safer for data safety and 10x faster
>>106800763microSD card is slower than HDD. You don't want to play anything but 25 years old games on it.
>>106800763soon we won't need to have stupid slow SD cardsit's about time SD cards were finished in this space
>>106800763>>106800875>>106800944>>106801705>>106801711Any noticeable different in temperature and power draw? Prices are better than I was expecting and I’m considering just ponying up for a 2TBseeing conflicting info regarding the larger drive screwing with the thermals
>>106801809Do you have any proof or are you just talking out of your ass?Flash is flash, it doesn't matter if it's in one form factor or another if you're buying from a reputable brand like Sandisk or Samshit. If you buy shit from Aliexpress, it doesn't matter if it's an SSD or SD, it would be garbage.
>>106803018Ignore the retard, you only need SSD for more extensive games that use direct storage SD card is fine for anything that would belong on the switch or doesn't use that new direct storage meme shit
>>106801809Holy shit if you literally can't afford a new SSD you need to find a different hobby. Buying used computer shit is the epitome of poor. Used monitors are barely fucking acceptable.
>>106801865SD Express now uses the pci-e bus directly just a matter of time for it to mature and get better speeds overal
>>106800763>>106802793>>106801711Crucial just put their 2230's on sale on Amazon to take advantage of the Deck salethey have their 2TB up for like $130 which is nuts.
>>106803018Quality difference. lower quality nandslower quality controllerslower quality resistors/caps (if even)lower quality safeguardshigher thermal densityYou're paying a huge risk for using sd card. Its garbage. From my own experience, most of my sd cards have failed in usage or while not in usage (left alone for 1+ in my tray storage).
>>106803122Retard for emulation and small games it's fine, the deck is not going to be able to run too many games that abuse the disk like direct storage and you can easily google which games. Just shut the fuck upHe will just have to cope with having less demanding games on main storage which isn't a fucking problem on steam.>>106803048I promise you that my system rapes yours and I assure you that you're fucking retarded. There is nothing wrong using used storage it's a staple for many people running home servers. While I never would use it many people have no issue using used enterprise drives and using a used SSD for a handheld where the threat level is non existent is fine you fucking sperg.
>>106803146Stop copingGet ropingSticking to Sunk Cost fallacy isnt a viable strategy. SD cards are trash. Especially given that SSDs are near cost parity if not even cheap.
>>106803163Post your system, I bet you're some bottom tier IQ retard. You already know you lost this but your too low functioning to give up. Nothing more hilarious than faggots poor shaming people over shit they can't comprehend.
>>106803089I had no idea these were $200+ normally. I just got one for my (non steam deck) computer. Good timing I guess. I thought 1TB would be enough but I put the 2TB one in, and already within 3 days I have 933GB remaining lolOP:- Get the 2TB ssd- If you still need more space get a 1 or 2TB microsdOnly put roms and other things like old games and music on it. Modern AAA games will run like shit. If you're smart about the type of games you install on it you'll be fine (e.g celeste, stardew valley, sure, cod no)
Yes. I did it on the LCD and OLED and it was definitely worth it. I just used a spudger
>>106801865>>106803077CF express type b is literally 2230 NVMEs in an enclosure with a protocol on them for cameras If manufacturers wanted real storage they could have done years ago Also type a cf express is fucking tiny
>>106800763i did the 2tb nvme replacementnever considered an sd card because of the extra "do i install it on the ssd or the sd card" step
>>106803018You're just mad you used a gay avatarfag pic about sd cards and hate the notion sd cards are shit compared to a fucking ssd unless you get the 64gb ssd in the deck, which isnt even nvme it is some other ancient shit. Still wouldn't trust it over a double mcwhopper class abcdegfhi sd card.
>>106800763If you're running PC games younger than 10 years definitely get an SSD, if you're just emulating PS2 etc. stick to an SD card.
>>106800763Depends on what you're playing. Modern games will definitely suffer from the slow read speed of the SD card, for older games and emulation you'll just get a marginal difference in load times.
512GB of each running in a raid 0 is the real solution.
>>106800763i don't get the microsd cucks in this thread. yes, the 1tb microsd card will do just fine for basic shit. it will also run much hotter, be much slower, and last not even half as long as the shittiest 1tb ssd you can find, outside of maybe the temu chinesium ones made with recycled nand flash chips.
>>106803018>spinning disks are spinning disks, doesn't matter if it's a 1tb 5400 rpm smr or a 1tb 10k rpm cmr>cpus are cpus, doesn't matter if it's a 3.8ghz intel n250 or a 3.8ghz intel core i7-10700k>ram is ram, doesn't matter if it's 16gb single channel 1333mhz ddr3 or 16gb dual channel 3600mhz ddr4>gpu is gpu, doesn't matter if it's 8gb r9 290x or 8gb 9060 xtyou are retarded. a microsd has lower quality nand flash, a shit microcontroller compared to even the shittiest ssd microcontroller, no dram whatsoever or even hmb like modern dramless ssds have, and heat up much worse, leading to even shorter life of the already shitty low endurance dram. but flash is flash. your mom and a cow are also the same thing since both are mammals btw
>>106800763listen nigga, get yourself an aftermarket backplate with a heat dissipation pad on it. swap it out when you put the new ssd in
>>106809659Are you talking about those copper heatsinks I’ve seen that are meant to be used in leu of the interference shield wrapper the OEM drive has?Do these actually make an appreciable difference? Every review I’ve seen is anecdotal and doesn’t show data or stats
>>106810269I removed the one on the original and just used it with the new one when swapping. It's fine.
>>106800763https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-2024-P310-PCIe-Gen4/dp/B0D61SDZD2>$121.99Good deal atm for those who want larger storage for their Steamdeck.
>>106800763 I bought a SD8 Elite phone instead because carrying another device for gayming is too much bother. It's gotten much better at emulation a couple weeks ago after a new driver came out, hope it improves even more after turnip starts supporting the chip because it's better than steam deck in terms of raw performance
>>106810396>SD8 Elitevery brave of you to come out as being gay, people are more accepting these days
>>106800763Memory cards have much lower TBW and are meant to be relatively disposable, unless you get one of those "High Endurance" types, but even then, durability will still not be up to the level of a proper SSD from a reputable brand.
>>106810730 iSir...
I have a Steam Deck and I use a 512gb micro sd card. I have never had an issue with an sd card, nor have I ever had a card fail on me, ever. I've used the same Amazon basics cards over three devices, the deck, a cheap ChromeOS netbook for one of the kids and a SD2Vita card on a PS Vita. Could I take apart the Deck and add a SSD with a compatible heatsink? Sure, I've looked into how to mod my console but DESU, I can't be arsed.
>30 minutes
>>106800763absolutely sd card are genuine unreliable dogshit
>>106800763Yes. Yet to see any evidence of these heatsinks helping for the record.
